The Gay Men’s Pub Quiz

I think that I am a Welsh 58 year old gay Bridget Jones..
I don’t quite know what I was expecting but The Gay Men’s Pub Quiz last night proved to be a rather good natured and strangely hilarious affair.
Some 80 Middle aged gay men from all over the UK were marshalled onto zoom by a professionally adept quiz master called Kenneth  , who presumably was well versed in herding cats and sounded as though he had performed centre stage at the Old Vic.
Like with the RAF yesterday , there was no messing with Kenneth!

With a headteacher’s authority , Kenneth split us into groups quite quickly , so I just had time to check myself in the mirrored oven cover before the get go.

Face washed ( tick)
Hair brushed ( tick)
Clean shirt checked for food stains ( check) - there was only one small splash of pot noodle..no one would notice ...tee hee
Background looking interesting behind me ( double check )
I was ready.
I squirted myself with a blast of Clinique Happy as a gay moral booster, as if it mattered

My group was a nice bunch. Gerry and David, a couple from the Sheffield/ Derbyshire border in their late sixties were a riot. They bantered and bickered gently and told bad jokes throughout the evening so much so that at one stage I had a complete attack of the giggles and corpsed dreadfully throughout one session of questions . Alistair was a gently spoken and smiley  fellow nurse from Chester and Richard was a well spoken but very deaf elderly man from The Isle Of Man. I spied a Zimmer frame in the background of his spare room! which intrigued me.
Fifty questions were set between a 7.30 start and a 10.30pm finish , but booked into the quiz was the nice opportunity to chat with a luckily nice group of men .

We came around  6th out of 15 groups which wasn’t bad at all
I’m not really a gay guy who has to seek the ghetto of a group of gay men , but I really did enjoy the good natured banter of some nice guys with a ribald ( and stereotypically gay)  senses of humour

  2. Sounds like a good humored, fun group of guys. You had fun with it. Is there a follow-up event? Friendships can grow from these gatherings and you never know where it goes from there...

  6. Someday I want to experience a British gay bar - or is that pub?

  7. If it's a pub did you get yourself a pint or two? What kind of questions were asked?

I had to look up corpsing, thought it was a weird typo.

Good that you laughed and had fun!

Nothing more refreshing and relaxing than being in the company of like minds. And the quiet exhilaration of finding such like minds in the first place. Terrfic!

  10. Sounds fun.

I stopped washing my face every day about half way through my life so far when I realised it didn't seem to look any different afterwards.

When I was a kid, I was made to do it every morning. I wonder why?

    2. At the beginning of the pandemic, with all the (good) 'don't touch your face' advice, it struck me it might have been a throwback to pre-vaccine/antibiotic days, a way of attempting to avoid infection.

  12. I'd have loved being part of this, but I don't even know what this 'Zoom' thingy is. I've always loved to watch TV general knowledge quizzes, the harder the better, having all my life have been one of those who pick up odd facts of trivia through having quite a wide range of keen interests, some quite obscure. Only ever been in one pub quiz and that was 30 years ago when our team came second (out of 8 or 9, I think).
But this what you participated in sounds real fun. I hope you'll do it again - soonish.

    2. I'm not sure, JayGee. I appreciate your thought but if I decided to give it a go my main concern would be trying to make presentable, having really visually let myself go to blazes behind mask and multi-layered Winter-wear, and now including the problem of how I look to others when speaking since my accident of 3.5 years ago which 're=arranged' my front teeth, so conspicuous and distracting when talking, laughing or open-mouthed smiling - plus, not to mention my finding a suitably acceptable background amidst all this clutter. If it wasn't for all that I'd jump at the chance. But I'm NOT saying 'no', you understand.

    3. Have a think, everyone looked pretty ordinary to me

    4. Raybeard your comment made me sad. I don't usually comment but wanted to reply to you.
I spent years, literally many years, not joining in things because of how I looked, including the strange tilt to my mouth when I said certain letters. I've been conscious of this since being a child when I was mocked because of it. I'm now in my 70's and have been able to join in things, including a Zoom get together. Like you I was concerned about my appearance but after realising only my top half would be showing I brushed my hair and wore a clean top and joined in. Not only seeing myself as others saw me (and who really cares what someone in their 70's looks like anyway?) but also seeing the eccentric appearance of some of the others made me feel more at ease. I too worried about the background but sat myself with a blank wall behind me and that solved that. To be honest the chat was flowing and people laughing together and focussing on what someone looked like didn't seem a priority at all.
I see from your profile that you have lovely eyes. You're obviously well read and I'm sure your wealth of knowledge would stand you in good stead in a quiz.
Please do join the quiz, this is an opportunity for you, don't worry about the little things, they're big things to us but nothing to others, join in and you'll feel as elated at your achievement as I did about mine.

My house is still a tip and my mouth is still wonky but hey who really cares! Good luck and best wishes Raybeard.

    5. Jess I am so glad that you said this...and you put it better than I ever could have. Raybeard, I am an extremely self conscious person myself. I understand. But it makes me sad to think of you missing out on something that you seem so well suited for.

  14. Doesn't sound like a ghetto to me, just a bunch of friendly chaps (probably all Covid 'stir-crazy'), who want to reclaim something of a social life! Hope they run some more...maybe I could use the psuedonym Charles and join in!

  15. I think Covid has brought out a side in us all that we didn't know we had John. We are mostly missing the everyday banter and chat so that putting ourselves into situations like yours last night is enjoyable.

Glad to hear you had a pleasant evening, in good company without cost or maybe just a small amount? I know very little about Zoom and stuff like that, being a Luddite.
But, reading this has given me an earworm of 'Who's Zooming Who' by Aretha Franklin, l don't even know the proper words or like the song much! Grr, thanks mate! haha, lol.

Sounds like fun. As older gay men, we now eschew gay venues, but it is fun to spend time with people on your own gay level and swap often self or towards other disparaging gay repartee. I'll just call you a fat old Welsh faggot and you can reply, Well there is fat old Aussie faggot of a similar shade of vermillion.

What a delightful few hours for you and the others who joined in the quiz! Even better, you and they have it to look forward to every week (except when on nights?).
Zoom-wise, will you need to get yourself some new shirts?

    Hugs!

  30. How fun is that! Good for you. So brave. I'm not so brave. Still very camera shy with the in-person stuff. Though, I did have an on-line visit with a physician's assistant and I thought I looked good. So... maybe. Glad you had a nice time and got paired up with some fun folk. Enjoy your weekend.
