Only Me/ You

So many people have a strange habit when introducing themselves on the phone
They say
It’s only me”
Almost as if they are apologising .
Which they are.....

I do it all of the time.
And I shouldn’t ....

Being awake when nearly everyone I know is asleep allows the mind to wander around such
conundrums.
Tiktok is filling with American Shite and Twitter with two many gay men, shirtless and drunk
My book The Object of my Affection by Stephen McCauley is untouched .
It was the first “ gay” novel I ever read back in 1989 and I can still remember a quote from it that resonated with me

Often, what's most attractive about a person is that part they're trying hardest to conceal, that part they think is least likable. You find out about it and it becomes a secret bond between you, something you never talk about but hold close to your heart and are continually touched by”

It still does........

Alison Moyet looks better now than she did thirty eight years ago
How is that possible?

My mask smells of olbas oil, a few drops before shift makes the wearing it bearable for hours at a time

  1. Off topic, did you see the completed, decorated Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center? It looked scraggly when it was delivered, people made mean comments, but now it is a thing of joy and beauty. Oddly it had a tiny owl nesting in its trunk and the little bird was transported all the way to the city. It survived and has been relocated: I think there is a charming children's book therein.

    It's only me, lizzy

    have a good night, John.

    1. I’ve just looked at it and it looks lovely as always. I have seen the Rockefeller tree many times up close and personal many times x

    2. You can fast forward to the end for the tree to light up:

    3. It is special, I always too my children there to see it and ice skate in the rink there. Familiar even mundane for us, but magic just the same, I think.

  2. I was so glad to see that the owl in the trunk of the Rockefeller tree has been returned to the wild.
Two of my brothers never identify themselves. If I am feeling mean I call them by the other brother's name.
I am glad that you found something to make mask wearing a little more bearable.

  3. My wife always said that she was attracted by my shyness. I agree with you about Moyet, she looks healthier, and more 'natural'.

  4. In addition to the owlet in the Rockefeller Christmas tree, apparently a family in Australia found a baby koala bear had come into their house and climbed theirs. I love cute news items like that!

More mature, happier within her own body and now without pop pressure. Edie Reeder is very much the same. And that song all these years on is now a provable classic.

That is a wonderful quote I shall keep, thank you for that. Very true. And that is a brilliant tip about the olbas oil!I

What a useful person you are to know and love! Always a new little gem!

  6. I think that could be the main reason your blog is so popular, you don't give us the sanitised 'John' that most people would show strangers...and so we feel like friends. x

  9. You once did a whole post on "it's only me", not long ago in fact. It is a greeting, a hello, and not to be taken too literally and is therefore totally acceptable in my book.

A comment above admiring Alison Moyet's "natural" beauty?
Sadly she is another victim of cosmetic surgery, the "celebs" can't bear to see a wrinkle.

  12. Why introduce yourself when cellphones let you know who's calling? I mean, how else would we screen our calls?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes why do we say that ? Just as if someone steps on our toes we apologise for leaving our foot in the way ! Well some of us do !

  14. I would say 'it's only me' if I knew that the friend was expecting a really important call.

  16. There are times when I don't know who "me" is. I don't have call display on the landline (archaic, I know!). Someone once asked how I knew who was calling without the call display to which I responded - I answer the call.

  18. I saw her live on her last tour. She came stateside. Adore her. Powerful. She's eating healthy. And she's happier. Her show was awesome. One of the best I have ever seen. I never answer the phone at all. And Stephen McCauley. He's not a very good writer and he's a not a very nice person in the flesh. Yes. In this case... Success spoiled Rock Hunter.

  20. I do this in person as well. The boss hated that about me that I would tap on her door and begin the covers a%ion with 'sorry...' It made me so nervous and self conscious I could barely speak around her. I loved that job. All these /÷are later, I think how terrible it was that someone in a position of 'power' would shred someone repeatedly over a mannerism.

  23. I LOVED that book when I read it back in the day. In fact McCauley's first three or four novels are all excellent. I haven't read him lately so I'm not sure about the latter ones.

I just bought David Leavitt's newest book the other day -- we'll see how that goes. (When I finally get around to it!)

  24. Caller id on the phone is ideal. With all the scam calls, knowing who is on the line is important. I screen calls using the id. I like, "It's me." I'd just take out the "Only".

    1. Susan, I was told by a Pharmacy about 4 years ago that it was being discontinued, so I bought up about 6 bottles and gave them to family.
Haven't had to buy any since, so not sure what's going on here in Australia.
      Awesome stuff with many uses.

  28. Both daughters sound the same on the phone. When one calls I have to figure out which one it is by the content of the conversation. I’ve been told the three of us sound the same on the phone. Caller ID has helped the problem.
