High Line

Facebook has an irritating habit of reminding you of something you have experienced years ago
Today it poked me about a rather special walk I did in Manhattan three years ago to the day.

The High Line runs from the trendy meatpacking district around 14th St , through Chelsea to the West Side on 34th street. It runs for going on two miles and follows the elevated train track of The New York Central Railway.
The elevated railway is planted out simply with low maintenance grasses and flowers and trees and has wonderful views of the Hudson River to the West ( when you are walking North) and the city scapes aka Rear Window to the East.
It was a warm November Sunday when I walked the High Line, with high blue skies and silvery deco skyscrapers bordering my view like a theatre set
Tourists ambled alongside New Yorkers in magical nodding good nature
And I remember thinking as the sun reflected in silver fish ripples on the Hudson that life couldn’t be any better than this

Remembering it ? .....emotional highs ......with a tiny bit of broken heart

  1. I saw the High Line in the film of the Gardens of Piet Oudolf. It looked fantastic and he is lovely. I went to New York once but the garden wasn't there then. I would like to see it. Memories can be like hitting a brick wall if we let them.

I thought it was about three years ago when we walked the Highline, but time flies. It was five years ago. It's a great experience.

  3. This is why I rarely look back at old photos, old blog entries, whatever, for even if nothing much has gone wrong since then I find the records of the past disturbing. I am an inherently miserable git, which I fight against every day. And with your recent traumatic life events I can sympathise deeply. Maybe switch that Facebook facility off, if possible, and look back at only what you would wish to see? But then, you had a great day. We need to have had those, and to still get some more.

  6. Wow, John; judging by reading this, next time you do the High Line it will be with a group of friends from both sides of the pond. That’s something to look forward to. x

  7. My friend and I did that walk 2013 but I think they may have added to it since then. It was a beautiful Autumn day and a great walk.

  8. The older I get, the more bittersweet I often find memories to be. The most wonderful memories cannot help but be tinged by subsequent events, alas.

  10. Sometimes I recall a time when I was so happy but then it becomes just too painful and I have to busy myself with something else before I become overwhelmed x

  11. We’re in upstate NY, a short train ride from NYC. I hope you’ll tell us all of you ever make it back...I’d love to meet you, give you a hug, and take that walk with you!

(FYI: I spent a year deleting all my old posts and pics from Facebook. Now, I only leave a new post up for a day or two, then delete it. There’s no historical posts or pictures for FB too slap me in the face with.)

  13. I was there last year when I visited my son and his wife. They both live in Hartsdale and work in Manhattan. Watching all the people on it was the most entertaining thing for me and then looking to see what plants they had used.

  14. The twists, turns and unknowns of life. Flashbacks can be especially hard. My hope is you will return to NY and have equally (or even a better) joyful experience.

The last time I was in NYC, it was 1964, I was 12 years old, and I was traveling with my aunt and her friends to the World's Fair. The Highline was likely still carrying trains then.

Even lovely memories often have a hint of sadness for those who are no longer in our lives be they grandparents, parents, siblings, friends, or others. May the loveliness prevail and the sadness be gentle.

    Hugs!

  17. I am glad you had that special day, not many experiences equal the city on a beautiful Fall day. Sadly New York City has suffered, is suffering, greatly from pandemic. My friend resumed working downtown this past week. The hotels, restaurants and events venues he once organized and managed were, he said, dark and empty. He was very sad, as was I.

  18. I've only been to NYC 1 time, last summer, but the High Line was the one thing that I most wanted to experience, and it did not disappoint at all. It was completely lovely. I think if I lived there, I would endeavour to walk it daily.

  19. Memories can be so hard, when they jump up at you.
Face Book has an awful lot to answer for.
Although my little dogs that passed away over six years ago popped up a few days back. It was so bitter sweet.

  20. Ah fond memories of NYC last there in 2011 and stayed in a studio apartment (Airbnb) in Chelsea. Loved that walk along the high line. We are hoping to return in a few years time. Love that city.

  21. That's why I don't do Facebook - I don't need to be prodded to remember the things that came before the death of a husband

  22. I'm loving Facebook Memories at the moment, although it's frustrating when the things you linked to that pop up from years ago say 'content no longer available' and you can't make any sense of the comments to figure out what they originally were!! I've been deleting them so I don't get annoyed next year too ;-)

  23. I'm not sure I would like to be reminded of past personal events by a giant logarithm. I hated it when Google wished me a happy birthday. It's a bit like the police sending you a card to let you know they know where you live.

I so want to walk The High Line; I envy you for having already done so. I've just finished reading 'Rootbound:Re-wilding A Life" by Alice Vincent, and it describes The Highline, and its efffect on people, wonderfully.

  26. That is one of the main reasons I don't post anything on Facebook about me personally; never ending reminders of how boring my life has a tendency to be lol.
