Guilty Pleasures

No
They are not Theatre Tickets, or dog walker fees, or cinema seats or my obsession with policemen with beards ...all those are essential pleasures
Not guilty ones
No , my main guilty pleasure happens but once a month on average, and lasts an hour tops!
My guilty pleasure is a trip to Aldi for a mooch around the centre ( non food based) aisles
Tonight has brought some amazing treasures
They include

Sculpting clay
A set of bespoke pencils
A bag of pigs ears
A squidgy nightlight in the shape of a fat bear !!!??!!!!!??????
Batteries
Hand gel
A pair of linen shorts
A pair of workman’s dungarees!!!!
2 bottles of white vinegar ( to clean off the polish from a 1940s bookcase)
A mini sander ( to carry on the preparation of the above)
A shiny tin lunch box
Lotion for cracked heels
A small succulent plant
Masking tape
Rainbow paper serviettes

Little treasures all!!!!

  2. I can't decide whether the character nightlight or the dungarees are my favorite wins from your splurge. Oh, alright, it's the squidgy light! It's like an adorable pet that doesn't crap on the carpet. :D

  3. we have aldi here; yes, the center aisle is a fun stroll. I have gotten laundry baskets and screwdrivers there.

  5. OMG I love the bin-food aisles at ALDI! I’ve gotten plants, last minute bday cards and a set of hand soap/lotion that smells fantastic.
My main guilty pleasure comes from ALDI, natch. Fig cookies.

  7. We don't have Aldi or Lidle here. But when we're in Europe, it's the first place the husband heads. He loves the centre aisles even when the labels are Spanish and he hasn't a clue. Drill bits next to sports shirts, next to bra and pantie sets.

He's still got a windbreaker jacket he found there.

  9. My partner loves Aldi. It is bookshops and nurseries which draw me in. And repeatedly seduce me.

  10. Our ALDI has mostly food, BUT there is LIDL which has crazy center aisles - children's wooden toys, food storage boxes, faux garden rocks with solar lights, bobble hats, and lounging joggers were all tossed in my basket over past year!
What the h--- will you do with pigs ears, yuck!

  12. What a fun shop and you actually got many useful items! Be careful with the sander on the bookcase unless you want to remove the stain and go to bare wood. I love everything you found, especially the nightlight and the lunch box. Something tells me your furry children will love the pigs ears!

I've always LOVED hardware stores and the wonders on each wall, shelf, and in the floorspace. Bliss! You've found treasures, indeed.
The last time I hear the term "dungarees" was in the 1950s or an old movie from that time. Here, the ones that come to the waist are "jeans" and those that extent over the chest and shoulders are "overalls".
    Enjoy your treasures!

    Hugs!

In the US we call it the Aldi aisle of shame. In fact there is a Facebook group to compare great finds.

  18. We don't have either Aldi or Lidl here but to be honest I don't buy anything extra these days. I just find I don't need it and don't want to add to the throwaway culture. The last non food thing I bought was a wooden spoon.

  19. JUST visited our only Aldi in the area just two days ago for the very first time which happens to be 30 miles away. It was a total learning curve. Had to put a quarter into the cart (trolley?) in able to free it up (got it back when returned) No shopping bags...bring your own or purchase them while in the check out aisle. But was completely mesmerized by the middle aisle! What riches...what junk! Came away with two giant coffee cups, a succulent, and an excellent dayglow orange insulated picnic basket. Life is good. X

  22. My daughter's buy a winter jacket from aldi pretty much every year and my husband gets excited to check the middle aisles. I deliberately avoid the seductive centre!

  23. My husband can not fathom why I find hardware stores and places where I free range wander to nose around stuff. I consider it my psychological therapy and even when I find “guilty pleasures” it is still cheaper than An actual therapy session. I hadn’t heard natch in a long time either!
    You make me giggle.

It is amazing what you can discover in Aldi when you are not looking for something.

  26. What a crazy list! I did a double take one day walking past when I saw dishwashers! How on earth could you lug that home??

  27. I look at that mad aisle every time but have never found anything I want. I also look at the chocolate aisle, and always find something I want (although I often resist). We must be very different, you and I.

  30. What a fun shopping trip sounds like a treasure hunt we don't have Aldi here maybe one day. I think painting your bookcase green sounds like a good idea.

  31. I love Aldi, too. I like to keep an eye on their pamphlets to see if there's anything coming up that I'll be able to use. And of course we get a lot of food there - because it's cheap!

  34. I'd like to see you in linen shorts. We're getting a Lidl here, not close but over on the mainland somewhere. I hope I get to visit and they have a treasure aisle, how fun!

  39. John - I thought you were saving up for a trip abroad to your favourite place (can't remember where)! Mind you I rather fancy that little succulent - they have them in our Co-op sometimes and they look nice in a row on my kitchen window sill.

  40. A bunch of flowers (£1.69 ... you can't say no!!), pot plants and vegan sausage rolls, are my most bought items from Aldi along with lots of tins of chickpeas, they are just so cheap from there I always go mad. But those centre aisles are lethal. I might own about 8 pairs of £4.99 Converse rip-offs ;-)

I would have loved to have seen the checkout operators face as your little haul went through the till ... did you buy ANY food apart from the pigs ears?
