It's official...the corona virus is here in North Wales and probably has been for a while now.
The next step is to cope with it.
The Trelawnyd Community Association has organised a meeting to highlight problem areas and to revisit the already organised resilience plan for the village and already the sturdier of local characters have been offering help on the village websites and by email.
It's nice to think people are going to have each other's backs
I've not long got home and as usual Trendy Carol and her hubby have clearly done their neighbourly thing and have walked the girls for me.
I'm lucky to live here.
What's going to happen to the isolated town and city dwellers, hidden away from neighbours and community by a lifestyle that reenforces loneliness

People over 70 will be instructed by the government to stay in strict isolation at home or in care homes for four months, under a "wartime-style" mobilisation effort by the government likely to be enforced within the next 20 days.

ReplyDeletePerhaps meetings are not such a good idea John (try Skype or another online route?). I know of a very recent meeting of consultants in one clinical speciality where one of the consultants has tested positive. They are now all in self isolation. Community action is great - but stay safe!

ReplyDeletePeople in our village have gone on-line to offer their services in getting prescriptions and shopping for the elderly here. Hopefully we won't need it, but you never know.

ReplyDeleteOur school district is closed until April 6th. Home Instruction begins on March 17th. Luckily a week of Spring Break is in there too, but we are prepared in case we need to be out longer.

ReplyDeleteMay you and your elderly hospice patients stay safe in the face of the virus storm. [ugh, flowery, but you get what I mean, I hope] Here nursing homes are banning all outside contact, except medical care as necessary. The patients are isolated, how frightening that must be, how lonely.

Strange it is to notice the mix of people.
Some appearing like, “life is no different”
and others seem overly concerned and serious.
My greatest concern is our dog Snickers.

has stayed in my heart all day.
We have quarantined ourselves and are ordering food and essentials from the Internet, but doing OK. The worst is yet to come and I pray that we all make it through. The young, some who are taking this lightly and are out and about, are not immune from this killer virus and they are being very foolish.
ReplyDeleteWe have it in our area too. We bought groceries and are now going to stay home except for medical appointments. There are going to be a lot more lonely people with so much isolation. It's a good time for bloggers to pull together. It always means a lot knowing others are there.

ReplyDeleteWe just got our first two cases in Northern BC, Canada. We have plenty of food for now, gassed up the car and have a plan B in case things get really nuts. I always check in with our elderly neighbours, but they also have family in town to help out. It is an anxious time. Everyone take care.

ReplyDeleteAs a 73-year old with no family, not a single friend (at least in person) or even just one acquaintance, starting to get concerned especially now that there's talk of in future all over-70s expected to self-isolate. (If I, with nil social life or scarcely any contact with others at all, were to get the 'v' 'twould be most unjust!) But I'm not the only pebble on the beach so 'nuff about the 'Me!, me!, me!' However, as long as I can keep the four pussycats fed (plus self, naturally) then I'll cope.
ReplyDeleteHoping to make a cinema visit this coming week, in a large venue, probably sparsely attended screening where I can sit well-separated from the hoi-polloi as I always try to be - and this could be the last such visit for some time. But if this goes on much longer I can see a number of cinemas and theatres sinking under for good.

ReplyDeleteWe shall be making sure elderly neighbours are ok. I did this before in a freezing winter thinking I could get in shopping, collect prescriptions for neighbours and the only cry for help I got was to help a neighbour put his post operation stockings back on ! He had taken them off in the night and he and his wife could not get them back on !
Those singing Italian ladies made headline news on the TV last night - lovely shots of them on their balconies. As to the virus - it doesn't seem to be up here yet but who can tell? They are saying that there are probably at least ten thousand cases here but not of course all reported,

It's here in my town too. All nursing homes are on lockdown so I cannot visit my mother who was admitted just days ago. She if frightened and alone. I'm beside myself. She is 95. I am in my 70s and alone. We are prime targets for the disease. Keep us in your prayers.....
ReplyDeleteCalled in to see Father in law today, he is 86 (energy of a 50 year old) he has told his younger neighbours if they need any thing from shops or chemist to let him know! Our neighbours husband is in a home and my husband's Aunt is receiving end of life care so not sure how much longer visits will be possible.

Weve had confirmed cases here, north west england. Schools are still open at moment but teachers are preparing home school packs. I work in the Community so work will be as normal for me. I will be helping out my neighbours if needed and my parents. We need to stick together. No loo roll in a 5 mile radius round here and plenty of supermarkets and shops. If the panic buying would calm down life would be easier as the deliveries are coming as usual there just flying out the door.

We’re on lockdown here. Very strange. A magical thing happened last night and we’re now prepared for tonight. At 8 pm people were out on their terraces clapping, and of course here in Spain clapping is brilliantly musical. It’s to honor the healthcare workers continuing to work through the pandemic. Now that we know, we’ll be out there tonight, too.

ReplyDeleteMy son-in-law is a grocery store manager and has offered to deliver anything we need. It will be like having a milkman again and reminds us of being young. I’m normally a homebody so this doesn’t seem like it will be too much hardship. I am concerned about needing more cat litter, but I can make them go outside if needs be. Also, when we run out of kibbles for the dogs and cats I have a freezer full of unknown packages I could boil up.

My concern is for my dogs and I must stay well to care for them.I have enough dog food for 2 to 3 weeks and for myself I can eat soup from odds and ends.I shall self isolate apart from daily dog walks and shopping for essentials once a week x

A neighbor has already posted to our neighborhood page, offering to run errands for "the elderly," which made me giggle as I jogged through the empty streets this morning. (Well, through a few empty streets.) However, I am on immuno-suppressants for my auto-immune illness and am 70, so I'm at home and appreciate both the moniker and the offer. Right now, I'm having trouble convincing my diabetic husband that he needs to be doing the same.
ReplyDeleteAt the moment 6 confirmed cases and 2 more probable overnight. One being a selfish sod relocating from Australia, had been tested but hopped on the plane back to Auckland before the 1pm deadline. In a coffee shop in NZ having a nice old time to get a text saying he had the virus! Gah... he should be prosecuted to the max. Otherwise, as a support worker I am trying to keep myself and my elderly clients safe by practicing all that has been mentioned. Visiting different people in the community could be fraught but I have my own contingency plans sorted; no directive from my work at all ...only relying on Min of Health directives. I am only worried about my cats so have stocked up for at least 3 weeks.

We've got neighbours who both came home from work with high temperatures at the weekend and are self isolating and our next door neighbour has just initiated a ring round system for if you're going shopping to ask if anyone wants anything picking up.
ReplyDeleteOf course living so far from the shops we are all used to having cupboards and freezers full of food anyway, so there is no panic go0ing on. Just sensible precautions.
