I have been intrigued to see the much discussed Korean movie Parasite since it pissed off Trump by winning best film at the Oscars.
So I popped over to Chester , had soup and a pretentious tap at my iPad in the Jaunty Goat
before walking around the corner to the Storyhouse for the 3pm seniors (!!!) showing
I didn't get it.
I mean I understood its message about the haves and have nots in South Korean society
But I just didn't get it!
Sometimes you just have to be in the mood for a certain movie
And I think today I needed something rather different
The dogs shared a pizza tea with me
Happily crunching the crusts noisily in front of the fire
I was glad to get home
I had a hot Bath
A weep
And watched Double Indemnity in bed
Cracking!!!
Barbara and Fred never liked Aldi
Sometimes we get, and sometimes we don't. Still an afternoon out.
ReplyDeleteFollowing my seeing of 'Parasite' and after I'd posted my review I started to think back to various holes in the storyline which had passed me by while watching it. Even so I still think it was a remarkably fine film which I'd gladly sit through again (even if you probably wouldn't?). More than one review I've seen said that the more times it's watched the more you notice about it, though I suppose that could be sad of any film. Nonetheless I think you can put me firmly in the class of those that 'got it'. Sure to be one of my 'Best Films of 2020'.
ReplyDeleteI think I will watch it again Raymondo. I think I was just not in the mood for it
DeleteAnything which pisses-off Trump deserves an Oscar as far as I am concerned. I have no plans to see it.
ReplyDeleteI will watch it again, when I'm in a different move
DeleteI had mixed feelings about this movie. At first I thought, "Is this a political analysis?" Then I thought, "If it is, it's pretty damn superficial." Next I wondered, "Is this just about class, then?" And concluded, "D'uh. If so, what it says is obvious." So ultimately I went with the interpretation that it's a movie about human psychology and emotion, based on the house with the seemingly well-functioning consciousness on top (the rich family) but which has a lot of baser, unconscious dysfunction underneath the surface (the poor family) and some really, really disturbing animalistic urges in the hidden basement.
ReplyDeleteDebra , an excellent take
DeleteAnd you mirrored many of my thoughts
I just engage with any of the characters
I didn't know tea came in pizza flavor. Sounds very American.
ReplyDeleteSpinach and mozzarella
DeleteYou're so right that some movies require you be in a certain frame of mind when you see it.
ReplyDeleteThe crusts are almost my favorite part of a pizza so our dogs haven't ever had a taste of the crust! Other food, yes, crusts, no. :)
What I still don't "get" is what time tea is served and is it followed by dinner (when?)? Many of you will view this question as "duh" but that's okay.
Hugs!
Right let me try to explain
DeleteWhen I was growing up you have breakfast dinner and tea
Dinner is now lunch
Tea is now dinner or supper
I think that covers it
Dinner doesn't exist in our house now. We have breakfast, lunch and tea. As above
DeleteThank you! :)
DeleteWell my mind's made up. Between your and Debra's analysis, plus I hear subtitles are involved, I'll pass on this one.
ReplyDeleteI love subtitles
DeleteMakes you concentrate
I don't wanna work that hard. LOL.
DeleteI certainly didn't say wow when I saw Parasites. I put it down to having worked in a rough part of town and seeing poverty, squalor and desperation at its rawest. Nothing about the circumstances of the poor family came as a shock. My take was the rich family were the parasites. At the same film festival was a film called "Assholes a theory". Weeks later it is still on my mind. I think you would find it interesting.
ReplyDeleteEveryone was the parasites in some way or other
DeleteI said on my blog that anybody who was worrying about not seeing it, don't worry. Palme D'Or yes, Oscars, no.
ReplyDeleteI just wasn't in the move. But I intend to get it on DVD
DeleteHaven't seen Parasite yet, but Double Indemnity? Wasn't Barbara simply stunning!
ReplyDeleteHer best film ....and Fred's too
DeleteDouble Indemnity. I'd take that or almost any film noir over modern film! I have watched one of the Parasite's director's previous films, a sci fi cult film called Snow Piercer;it was crash, bang wallop special effects predictable. Perhaps that's what irked Mr Trump? Perhaps...
ReplyDeleteHis monster movie The Host was a stunner xx
DeleteI’m not drawn to it at all .... I liked The Favourite ( I know, I’m way behind !!! ) XXXX
ReplyDeleteOlivia Colman ...
DeleteShe was in the year above my niece at school in Norwich!
DeleteI love her
DeleteMy favourite character in the Parasite was the gullible posh mother.
DeleteThe only positive character
DeleteShe was exquisitely gullible and held it together and there was a lot of wit in the film as well.
DeleteOlivia has a natural warmth when it comes to humour
DeleteShe exudes it
I loved her in "Flowers" when she invited her lecherous neighbour to her cottage one evening x
DeleteDown to earth Norfolk girl.
Delete"A Bath and a weep"? You snuck that in at the end, what's wrong? Just tired and overwhelmed, disappointed in the film? Sad you got the senior discount? I hope the weekend is better!
ReplyDeleteSee the next blog xx
DeleteSo sad for you.....
DeleteMe too - I found it a bit predictable even with its twists. I preferred 1917, a story told in an original way, which I think will stand the test of time.
ReplyDeleteStill haven’t seen it. I’m often disappointed after too much hype. Double Indemnity never disappoints. I don’t even know how many times I’ve now seen it.
ReplyDeleteI was also a bit disappointed by Parasite. Well acted, well plotted etc but if it was meant to be a satire on capitalism, where was the satire? It pointed out what we all know, the huge gap between the rich and the poor, but had nothing very original or thought-provoking to say about it. And I felt it lost its way rather in the last half hour or so.

When I lived in Laguna I saw lots of Korean and Hong Kong movies Korean movies need to be understood in the framework of Korea. Divided . It is hard to understand. Everyone cries, the rich/famous/Triad stay that way till the followers, fans (?) rip them apart. In Hong Kong Movies everyone fights, even long ago slights are brought up. everyone fights and then everyone dies. except the awful main leader,
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this movie but it follows the path with an ending that is unresolved from what I have heard. It is just what it is.
Now I have confused you even more.
