Tits Up

I never got to see Little Women at lunchtime
I found a rather nasty self scratched wound on Winnie's neck folds this morning which needed assessing so found myself sitting in the vet's waiting room instead of the warmth of the Prestatyn's Scala Cinema orange plush seats.
Winnie always makes a vet visit a bit of a joy even if she is not quite 100% when there.
She loves to sit by the door as we wait to be called, a position she likes as she is able to greet any dog or human as they wander in.
She reminds me of a rotund 1930s matron greeting her guests at a fashionable cocktail party.
The new Eastern European vet snorted when I all told her that I need not hold winnie's head for her to give the standard painkilling injections and antibiotics
and true to form Winnie started to blow kisses at the vet as the first injection plunged in
The wound looked nasty
and so did the 100£ bill
These dogs will be the death of me.

The weather is atrocious and with Storm Brendan in full flow I bought Winnie a Ginster's Pasty
then went on spec to the multiplex cinema in Llandudno.
There I saw the excellent and typically Guy Ritchie-esque The Gentlemen as Winnie slept after enjoying the aforementioned pasty and several handfuls of miniature cocktail sausages!

Hugh Grant his best performance to date

I wont go into any of the plot of the movie as it is simply just too complicated to make a stab at, suffice to say it has Mathew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam , Michelle Dockery and Colin Farrell all playing London based gangsters who are involved around the battle for topdog status in the production and supply of high grade marijuana

Who would have imagined that Lady Mary was such a good shot

In typical Ritchie style the film is very darkly funny with the whole cast looking like they had the time of their lives during its production, and uniformly they give some very impressive performances indeed, performances that are just overshadowed in a scene stealing turn by Hugh Grant who turns up as a sleazy gay, camp Michael Caine sounding private eye
I loved watching him in this movie, which is a true compliment as I don't rate him much as an actor.
I bet he wins a BAFTA for best supporting actor!

I'm home now and have just dressed Winnie's wound carefully as she sat on the kitchen table happily munching a slice of pizza
I love that old dog
She has more Chutzpah than Miriam Margolyes

  1. Sorry to hear about Winnie. Get well soon. The Gentleman is excellent. I agree Hugh Grant is like a camp Michael Caine. To quote Michelle Dockery " there's f-----y afoot"

  3. I liked The Gentlemen too and also couldn't attempt to explain the plot. It is better than Little Women. Hope Winnie's wound soon gets better and she doesn't do it again.

  7. ‘These dogs will be the death of me!’ I don’t think so, unless you decide to take a selfie of you and them on the top of a cliff! She’s such a lovable tart how could you not just love her to bits?

  8. Poor girl! And poor you, too. Pet worries are hard on the head. And wallet.

Get well soon, Winnie. I'm glad your stand-in movie was a good one. Maybe it will come here and we will see it; comedy is what I prefer to watch the once a decade that we go!

  9. I saw Little Women last night and thought it was amazing--but not a comedy; a rather adult version of the book. I don't know, if one didn't grow up with Jo as the secret alter ego, if it has so much appeal, but Saoirse Ronan is a fantastic Jo, and the rest of the cast is just right as well (except for Dr. Bhaer who should be older and dumpier).

  10. I get into scrapes with my dogs regularly.Today running after 2, I misguged a trees branch and wacked my forehead, yesterday one clawed my head being friendly,I am hurrying around the countryside up and down the mud paths chasing after them and slip over often.I am having to carry the new quite large one when he has a panic attack.Bathing them all daily is exhausting and then when the boys decide to play too rough I have to be referee. My lily does appreciate what I do though, when she sees the chaos and the effect on me she gives me a caring concerned look x

  11. i had a meeting with someone today that seemed totally disinterested in dogs. my winnie was so horrified that someone would not pay attention to her that she jumped up on him. i've never seen her do this before. she is so insulted by people ignoring her, as she should be!

  12. "These dogs will be the death of me!" I think we found your epitaph - at least a good coffee cup slogan. (Preferably one featuring a picture of Winnie.)

  18. Feel better soon, Winnie! Hugh Grant can be a surprisingly good actor when he has something worthy to sink his chops into.

  19. Ph dear Winnie - all that food - I bet she did the scratch on purpose - she knows you as well as you know her John

  20. We had no TV last night so we watched 4 Weddings and a Funeral. Wonderfully scripted film, but slightly spoilt by Grant's over-acting, and Andie McDowell's dreadful acting.

  21. You've got to love bulldogs. I never rated Hugh Grant much until he discovered his real self in Paddington 2. Now I want to see The Gentlemen more than ever.

  22. Why do you give her so much human food? The salt and fat are so unhealthy. I'm sure there are other snacks that convey your great love for her just as well? Just asking, no attack.

  23. Aww ... poor Winnie ☹️. But the scratch was more than made up for with an outing to the vet with Dad, and a pasty and sausages lots of sausages. She'll be self-harming on a weekly basis 🤣

  24. We have taken one of the cats to the vets twice now on Friday and yesterday . The vet has no idea what is wrong with her , she is eating drinking doing all the other essential things , but she keeps fainting , can't describe it any other way . When we came out of the surgery the vet was stood scratching his head , we have flummoxed him .

    1. Don't laugh but one of my bantam chickens was fainting but as you say normal in every other way. The vet said she had a heart murmur. I am sure your vet will have checked her heart but it was just a thought.

    2. Unfortunately the vet could not listen to her heart she was purring too loud , she seems better today at the moment .

And I think I like some of Ritchie's work. His gruffy macho-esque men kind of resonate with me...

  28. Get well soon Winnie! I just saw the new Little Women and while it was good - It didn't come close to the 90's version in my book. Winona is my little jo!

  29. I do love that photo of Winnie. I'd like to see the film, Hugh Grant seems to play the same type so often it will be great to see him out of character.

Miriam Margoyles was on the Graham Norton show last week and had me in stitches !

I hope Winnie recovers quickly x

  30. I bet Miriam Margolyes eats more healthily than Winnie. Ginster's pasty, cocktail sausages, pizza - why not give her a plate of chips and a lard sandwich too?

My daughter took me to see Little Women today and it was delightful. I now want Jo's bedroom as it had such character. The actress who played her would be wonderful playing Emily Bronte . . .

Poor Winnie! She certainly made the best of the situation as a regal greeter to one and all. With all of the yummy treats that followed, she may plan to do this more often! You know how reinforcement - both positive and negative - work. ;)

Great photo of Hugh Grant, too.

    Hugs!
