Yesterday
Lunch in trendy Shorditch, drinks in Lewisham, Tate Britain by the Thames and homemade soup and Bread in Catford!
The William Blake exhibition reinforced to me that he was a troubled man and I was thrilled to find my favourite painting of his , the tiny ( literally) paint on copper...The Horse.
I had a lovely time.

He was Philip Pullman's biggest influence.
ReplyDeleteYes, William Blake certainly had his mental issues but his poetry was 200 years before its time.
ReplyDeleteIs Catford nice John-I've got friends who live there ? x
ReplyDeleteI liked it
DeleteYay for having a good time! That's good to hear.
ReplyDeleteA good day out!
ReplyDeleteOnce you realise how small some of his work is, and so detailed and beautiful... breathtaking.
Echoing jenny_o.

Amazing tiny painting. What did you see in it to deduce Blake was troubled? If my calculations are correct the painting is approx 2" x 4 1/8", quite marvelous technique and ability to get so much on something that small, esp the oddity of a copper engraving plate.
ReplyDeletePS Glad to see you in a real shirt, either fresh and clean or good for hiding stains!
No Lizzy this painting is my favourite because of its delicacy
DeleteIt is his other paintings that trouble me
Marvelous! Am glad you had such an enjoyable outing with a good friend, good food, an interesting exhibit at the Tate to view, and a pack of joyful welcomes when you returned home.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
I saw the Blake exhibition at the Tate in the early 80s and more recently a Blake exhibition at the Ashmolean. I visited the Tate in St Ives before Christmas and bought the (very expensive) Tate book on Blake. Are you saying he was a troubled man regarding his mental health - or the revolutionary times he lived in? I think he is a misunderstood man.
ReplyDeleteSome of his visuals troubled me
DeleteIt sounds quite lovely, yes. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteYou and Blake had one thing in common - you both visited your vegetable patches naked.
ReplyDeleteI had my socks on !!!
DeleteSounds like you had a cracker of a day. Onwards into a fantabulous 2020!
ReplyDeleteJo in Auckland
See! I told you 2020 was going to be your year! What an auspicious start. :)
ReplyDeleteVery nice, indeed! I used to live a stone's throw from Lewisham over in Greenwich. Did you happen to see the Catford cat while in Catford? He's pretty fab.
ReplyDeleteI saw the Mural
DeleteThe best collection of Blake's work is at the original Tate. I used to spend hours there!
ReplyDeleteYou're a culture vulture.
ReplyDeleteYou really are a man about town!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a brilliant day. Love the painting.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had such a good time.
