Thursday

I've worked 5 twelve and a half hour day shifts in the last 7 days
And I'm tired tonight.

I've had to sweep the flue of the wood burner as it was smoking when I lit the fire
The cottage is still full of smoke and I'm cold

I only had a four day old homemade shepherd's pie left in the fridge that and a murky pork chop
I ate the pie cold with tomato sauce still in my uniform
Winnie ate the chop
( whole)

Dotty is now licking my bare feet with a fat tongue
It's Bliss....

The cottage looks like the wreck of the Hesperus

I can't think of a blog to write today
Bed soon me thinks

I'm tired and rather angry

  8. Five 12 & a half hour shifts in seven days? John either you're a glutton or someone has messed up the off-duty! Four in a week used to finish me off - I'd have brain fog for days after. Sleep well!

  9. I can understand why you are dog tired but not why you are angry. Is it because your lottery numbers didn't come up...again?

  10. Why do they have such ridiculously long shifts? No person can possibly be at their best for all that time. I heard once it was that employees preferred them because they then had more time off in a row but I cannot believe it.
We had an eye surgeon who lived on our circle, the train went very close to his house and he could not sleep. Sold the house as fast as he could. I used to worry about his patients if he was operating on their precious eyes while sleep deprived.

  11. They bought the house for the view without thinking about the train.

Sweet dreams! I hope you had a glass or two of wine with that dinner and that the idea of several days off should be a lovely waking thought in the morning.

Hope you get some good food to sustain you, firewood to keep you toasty, and more of whatever floats your boat in planning your days off!

Has your new chair arrived at your home? That picture could be a post all by itself.

    Hugs!

  13. You have a lot of supporters out there, John. You have a complaint, they have words of comfort for you. Must have done something right, eh?

  14. And why wouldn't you be, Johnny!! What an enervating schedule. Your love and attention and care for your patients at the end of their lives is so beautiful that it makes me cry. So many hands pulling at you, please take the time to rest and be just John. As the song goes, 'you are so beautiful to me, can't you see?'

  15. You need a good long sleep, a hearty breakfast, and some time at home with the dogs. That will put you right. :)

  18. Warm bed with canine bedwarmers will take the grumpy chill off and send you off for a good deserved sleep. May I suggest that if you and the cottage are cold, bare wet feet aren t very comfy, nor is cold dinner! [No microwave? Maybe get an inexpensive counter top one?] Lots of fast prep hot soups on hand for the coming winter, even if they're store bought? And better meal planning/ shopping on your days off; you need to accomplish to have-to stuff before the fun stuff even if you are only producing meals for you [and your health].

    sorry to nag. I worry.

  19. I hope you have one of those electric pie makers as I've put in some receipes. You don't have to use pastry and they freeze well and a plate in the fridge is warmed up in the microwave is a flash. Put them in with last year's Christmas presents which look like being this year's as the days are moving fast.

  20. Why are you angry, John? Hope you wake up feeling less angry and more refreshed. x

  21. That's a bummer having to deal with the smoke when your tired, those are long shifts John, No doubt you will feel better in the morning.

  23. Nothing worse than a smoking fire, especially when you're cold, tired and hungry. Hope you get sleep, food and the fire sorted, in that order. Those shifts sound punishing ☹️. I would suggest a stack of ready meals and a loaf of bread in the freezer for the next emergency meal requirement. At least then you can have hot food and toast.

  24. Have a great night's sleep and a few wonderful days off. Looking forward to reading what you do with them. xx

  25. That's hard work, I can see why you are tired, but not why you are angry - unless it's at the fact that you are coming back to a cold dark cottage on your own. Pre-planning is essential, I always cook once to eat twice, so the freezer soon fills up with 'ready meals' for occasions like this. Hope you've had a good night's sleep, and feel much better today.

  26. Rest well, and I'm sure you'll feel better when you wake up. I laughed about Winnie eating the chop whole. Olga would do the same. I don't know how dogs digest all that they do.

  27. I like reading your blog even when you say you can’t think what to write. Is that a normal shift? That’s exhausting in a “normal” job. Yours can be so emotionally draining.

  28. Jeez 12.5 hour shifts for 5 days.. I did 13 hour shifts for 2 days... was a zombie after all week. How you do it I don't know... but what I do know is it isn't possible to sustain it over a long period without your body and mind going into decline... I would question the roster maker... do they also do those shifts or are they in the cushy office job!! Fair play is in order.... Enjoy your precious time off... eat, sleep and be merry not necessarily in that order...Sleep being the one that comes to mind!!
