Rachel And The Stranger

Just after 8pm there was a knock on the door.
It was the Hungarian support worker who I had given a gift of sausage to a while back
Her husband sat in the car and he waved
She gave me some homemade cake called something like "sootmeny Rigo " and a small bottle with its own stopper
" Palinka" she explained...." Hungarian fruit brandy! Tank you"
She shook my hand
I drank a couple of large slugs of it and it warmed my face nicely
I am sat watching the old 1948 film RacheL and the Stranger! And I've drunk some more now I'm  Feeling rather pissed ( in uk pissed means tipsy and not angry)

  1. How lovely - and I think you’re entitled to have an evening getting slightly pissed, occasionally it’s just what you need.

  2. "Feeling rather pissed" in the good sense ….correct :)
What a kind thing to do, I'm sure you will be missed by many at your old job, patients and fellow nurses alike.
Wishing you all the very best in your new one, you're a shining star amongst us.
    Hugs,

  3. Nice! Just nice for several reasons - a reciprocal gesture, a little buzz while watching what looks like a neat old black and white movie, an uncomplicated evening. -Jenn

  4. It sounds most excellent. And how nice that the Hungarian woman found a way to express her gratitude at your kindness. I hope the cake is delicious and also warms the cockles of your heart.

  7. Rachel and the Stranger … one of my favorite movies, but why are you now pissed? Is it something about the movie or the side effect of fruit brandy?

  10. My husband is originally from Hungary, as was his parents. His mom taught me to cook when we were first married, but the baking took a lot longer. Sootmeny Rigo Janci is not in my repertoire, but there are several others. The cakes and cookies are lovely but take a great deal of time and unsalted butter.
Watch the palinka consumption...that stuff is at least 40 proof. You will have a headache tomorrow.
Take care and best of luck with the new job.

  11. Nice one John. Do you good. Home made plonk always has a kick to it. In my case I invited my cousin over for Sunday lunch. Had not seen her for a while. Drank a bottle of Port between us then started on the homemade Raspberry Vodka. If memory serves me correct my cousin did not get her dinner. She has never let me forget it. A slightly pickled John. Just watch the headache tomorrow. Take care Pattypanxx

  14. In Canada it means both, usually the angry "p" but it also means the other here. I don't think that I've watched that movie. I just read yesterday's post about getting old, touching. That's one of the nice things about where mom is now, the staff treat the people like family and friends, not like a number that is only allowed a few minutes each day.

  15. "Tank you"? Eh? Did the Hungarian woman wish to put you in a tank... like a goldfish?

    1. Well, some forinners do have a problem with the tee aitch. Or, as I call it, the lisp. My mother who doesn't speak English at all at all can barely bring herself to say it - but when she does it sounds like "Sank you". Which, for reasons only known to me, makes me titter. Quietly and in an affectionate way.

  18. That's nice. We call it Schnaps. And then, by way of detour, there is "ein Langer und ein Kurzer" (a long and a short) - oh my God - Beer and a shot. It's a man thing. I can't think of any worse combo.

If that Schnaps your Sausage Friend gave you is as pure as the one my beloved grandfather once made me drink (for medicinal purposes) you will sleep soundly and be as good as new in the morning.

It's said that what goes around, comes around. Cake and Palinka brought right to your door?! Just goes to show that you're a good man, John Grey.

    How sweet it is.

    Hugs!

  27. I remember this film from when I was a kid. I couldn't understand why William Holden wasn't interested in Loretta Young as anything more than a housekeeper. I mean, really. But I also remember liking William Holden (oh, that shirt... and then he took it off) and Robert Mitchum. At the time, I wanted to grow up to be them... or so I thought.

  28. Awww, what a great gift! I've never had Palinka but I'm sure it was yummy...and soothing. I've never seen that movie, either. Gotta check it out but now that Dave's back I have to wait until he goes away again, because he hates B&W films. Sad!
