Julian And Sandy

The bantam cockerels who upped sticks from the Ukrainian Village last year are still doing well thanks to the collective support of the neighbours.
They sleep atop one of the yew trees in the Churchyard and walk over the Cottage in the morning to spend the day bumming scraps from Sailor John and Mandy and Trendy Carol further down the lane.
Occasionally they will sit on my bathroom window ledges if I leave the window wide open after one of those ( I'd give it a few minutes if I were you ) moments, much to the hysteria of Mary who still finds any hen fair game in the chase you /kill you stakes.
Another neighbour refers to the cockerels as Julian and Sandy then got all of a dither when he thought he was not being politically correct in front of me
I love when people get in a dither

  3. They really are quite beautiful, aren't they? I've never seen any chicken that looks like these two.

  4. I presume that's an elderly neighbour - it would have to be for him to remember Julian and Sandy. The only reason I know who they are is because a colleague who was much older than me used to reminisce about them. He thought they were hilarious - I always assumed they lost something of their magic in his re-telling....

  17. When we were in Mexico we went to a little beach bar where a rooster lived. He was a very pretty guy and went from table to table, begging scraps and then settling into the sand for a nice bath. He had no hens but he seemed content.
I've been wondering about your roosters. I've got eight teenaged chickens right now, hatched and raised by one of my hens and damn but I am certain that at least half of them are roosters. I already have two grown roosters and they seem to have worked out the logistics of that quite well but I know (from experience) that this is rare and I do not want to add any more to this delicate mix. What to do? My chooks run the yard every day and I have no way to keep the males separate from the rest. Their mother is a jungle fowl- a very interesting and smart breed but skinny as can be. Eating them wouldn't be worth the work of plucking them.
One of the problems of chicken-raising.
Perhaps I could send them to you and they could join the flock of your very handsome guys?
    Well, probably not.

  19. I had bantam cockerels, beautiful but murderously dangerous...Mind you they had ‘girls’ to look after...I take it that these two are less violent as there are no girls to strut in front of........should I have ended that sentence with a preposition?

  23. Beautiful chickens! Out of 20 chicks we added recently, we think there is only one rooster. He crowed for the first time a few days ago and we find him very handsome (wouldn't want to put him in a beauty contest with your boys though!) Hopefully he'll stay friendly and we can keep him.

Oh, handsome boys, they look like a photo shot for the front cover of Country Living Magazine.
Can you get a pic without that funny metal animal thing and send it off to the mag, or somewhere similar, might be a bit of dosh in it, just a thought.

  32. Pretty Birds, and silly looking cow. When I was Hawaii on the island of Kauai there is a huge population of feral chickens. I mentioned to one of the locals that someone should open KFC = Kauai Fried Chicken. She said her mother has a recipe for the chickens. Put some rocks in the bottom of a pot, put in the cleaned bird, cover with water and simmer until the rocks are tender, another couple of hours and the birds might be edible. Apparently feral birds get a little tough.
