Tootsie

I first saw Tootsie 36 years ago
It was in the Odeon cinema in Chester and I was on a date with Mandy Boardman who was a student general nurse.
I watched the film again tonight and boy does it stand up well after all of these years.
A glorious cast of  Hoffman, Lange and  Pollack supported superbly by the likes of Terri Garr, Bill Murray, Charles Durning and Dabney Coleman look like they are having the time of their lives in this cross dressing comedy which still has so much to say about the gender gap, sexism and people's rights.
Written by Larry Galbert and Murray Schisgal and directed with confidence and  wit by Pollack himself Tootsie is a timeless classic that has been much copied but never quite beaten.
9/10
( my claim to fame was that I have almost sat in the same table as Pollack and Hoffman did in their Tootsie scene in the Russian Tea Room

  1. I watched Tootsie about a month ago and was also surprised at how well it has stood the test of time and how relevant it still is. Also glad you got out with the dogs to enjoy and scotch egg by the sea x

  3. I remember standing in a long line to see this when it first came out. I still love it. Sidney Pollack is a hoot! I never liked Jessica Lange, though. Don't know why, but every time she spoke it set my teeth on edge. Still does.

  4. Charles Durning was an incredible actor. I can still see his face as Hoffman's character comes clean as they're sat at the bar. Terri Garr is a gem as well. Heck, they all were.

  5. I loved the Russian Tea Room! Went there with my best pal a few years back. I just never realized our hotel was next door to it and the Carnegie Hall!

    Ear scratches to the pack!

  13. I loved the movie then, still do. A bravura performance from all involved. Few movies live on, except as period pieces at best. This is like '3 Days of the Condor', 'Fail Safe', etc. Best to you, John

Well, there's a blast from the past! Loved the movie then and haven't seen it since. I wonder why that's so?

    Happy today!

    Hugs, too ...

  15. A great movie! We just watched “Some Like It Hot”. Hilarious and also brave how they pooh poohed the censorship of the time (1959). Thank you for the reminder to look for “Tootsie” again.

  17. You "almost sat at the same table"? The old knees give out then before you made it down that far! Sorry just teasing. Anna

  18. We lived in Marina del Rey when Tootsie came out and had some well-connected friends. We actually were invited to the red carpet premiere at the Chinese Theatre and the after-party at the Brown Derby. Talk about having stars in your eyes! What an experience. Dustin Hoffman even mumbled hello to us at the Brown Derby as we devoured unlimited lobster tails.

  19. I loved that film, watched it over and over. Like the bit when he was in bed with his lady friend, wearing his wig with curlers in it. He turned over and the wig stayed where it was, his head rotating inside it. So funny.

  22. It is a great film, much more than just funny. I loved the way Hoffman had such a good relationship with Lange as Tootsie. And Terri Garr was perfect.
