It's nice to be city bound occasionally
Lunch at the Indian street food restaurant Mowgli followed by a mooch around a nice museum with a squint at seven very handsome and smiley Chinese mausoleum guards to boot!
Too bad they were made from terracotta...they were seven big hunks of spunk
The exhibition at Liverpool's World Museum has been sold out throughout its run, which is a testament to how such a vast memorial has captured the imagination.
I see that a few bloggers have seen the original Army in situ which , I think must have been an amazing experience....
How interesting it must have been to see these few terracotta figures for yourself.
ReplyDeleteAh, Mowgli! I have fond memories of The Jungle Book so find it a wonderful name for an Indian restaurant. Hope the food was delicious.
Hugs!
What a fabulous day out.
ReplyDeletecheers, parsnip and badger
Super cool!
ReplyDeleteNice to hit the big smoke once in a while. I can't decide myself whether to dust off the free rail card and head for Belfast...? Derry...? Dublin...? I'm delighted you had a good day out, culture and good food. The very best.
ReplyDeleteI went to see them at the beginning of the month, really enjoyed the exhibition, also had a quick peek at the Egyptian hall of the museum which was fascinating.
ReplyDeleteIll return to tbe museum on my own for a day out
DeleteGood to hear you having another day of getting away from it all and doing something completely different - and Indian food too. Glad you enjoyed the terra cotta figures. When I saw them John I thought they were so close together - impressive in one way because there were so many of them but i can't help thinking that in some ways seeing them individually might be more impressive.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see the whole army in situ.
ReplyDeleteIt would be quite an experience to see them for real! I watched a program on the Discovery channel last week about their history....amazing!
ReplyDeleteThe food's amazing at Mowgli isn't it? My usual is Yoghurt Chat Bombs, Bunny Chow, and Himalayan Salted Caramel ice cream for dessert. Add a couple of cups of Cardamom Tea and the meal is perfection!
ReplyDeleteWe took our 2 year old grandson a few weeks ago, he had the Butter Chicken and Rice, and ate every morsel!
Glad you had a good day in 'the pool'! X
It must have been wonderful for you. Did you know that no two are the same?
ReplyDeleteI never thought of them as big hunks of spunk.
ReplyDeleteThey were good lookibg blokes
DeleteGlad you had a good day John , we too were in Liverpool today, at the Plahouse to see the the Alan Bennett play, the Habit of Art, would recommend it was clever and funny , all about WHAuden , and Benjamin Britten . Hope you enjoyed the Indian meal, we like it there.
ReplyDeleteSmall worldx
DeleteWas Auden in carpet slippers?
DeleteNot in slippers but very grubby, complete with Pee stained trousers. Not a play to watch if you’re a prude, or if swearing offends. We thought it was excellent and funny
DeleteI have recently read both Auden's and Britten's biographies. Auden often went out in carpet slippers and preferred to wear them most of the time. Auden and Isherwood grew tired of Britten because he wasn't up for so much "fun" as they were. So it seemed quite a strange combination for the play when you said Auden and Britten.
DeleteBooked out solid! Lucky you & Kudos to the Museum for piquing everyone's imagination. Some came to Australia some years ago and I saw them with my Mum. It was a fantastic exhibition but I'd love to see them in situ.
ReplyDeleteI was lucky enough to see them in Xian in 2010 an amazing experience, our appetite was whetted by seeing a few (possibly replicas) in Bournemouth in the early 1980's. Never thought I would get to see the real thing though. Alison from Shropshire.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen them in China but there was a huge touring exhibit here in Toronto a few years ago that I was lucky enough to view - it was a huge exhibit and just fascinating. Glad you had a really nice day.
ReplyDeleteI saw them at that time as well. It was a good exhibit.
DeleteYears ago some of these warriors were on exhibit at a local university. I decided that my sixth grade boys would enjoy seeing them while we were touring the campus. Unbeknownst to me there was also a nude art exhibit right next store! I passed those students thru that area at a dead run...
ReplyDeleteAha! An outing! How great! I envy you that visit to Mowgli.
ReplyDeleteYes. But what did you think of the exhibition?
ReplyDeleteFriends saw them a few years ago in China — what they described to me was quite impressive.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see the original. My aunt and uncle went early on and my uncle snuck photos all along the way. Such respect. Still would enjoy even seeing several like you did. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteI think seeing the individual figures as you have would make seeing the whole army in situ at a later date even more impressive. I guess it is a completely different perspective than seeing them en masse.
ReplyDeleteMowgli looks nice ... and what a great name for a restaurant :-)
Happy you enjoyed your day out . . .
ReplyDeleteWish I was viewing this exhibit . . .
Thanks for the peek . ..
What a grand adventure, yummy food and the exhibit!
ReplyDeleteI was intrigued to see that the exhibition opened in Liverpool in February because we saw it in Richmond, Virginia in January.
ReplyDeleteI am impressed that it has been sold out in Liverpool because we just turned up in Richmond and it wasn't busy. It was an odd day because in the museum and grounds they were filming Homeland.
You also got the better meal, we ate in the "posh" restaurant at the museum. The waiter was so over the top in the way he talked that I almost embarrassed myself laughing.
Helen
It's been sold out here
DeleteWe too have had several friends see the original. They were dears and sent us postcards...which filled me with a real longing to be there with them.
ReplyDeleteMy friend is there now looking at these warriors of clay.
