Before Shift

Just a chatty post today....Those of you that have ever known night shifts before will understand it when I say today feels like a nothing sort of day.
It's as though you are waiting for something to happen, a bit like the run up to a concert or a wedding,
The time spent waiting seems wasted somehow...but of course it isn't.
I walked Mary on her power walk, and sat down to make lists of what I planned to do between my new nursing shifts in the next month. I always need to use a calendar
There's a few things to do:- Choir, a theatre trip with friends to see the all female version of Lord of the flies, a dinner party, fat club, Sams shifts , a social with Gorgeous George, a visit with my solicitor 😟. There's also the allotments to dig too....and I still miss the ponies.
Nick from the Community Association has just knocked on the side window ( I thought it may be Hattie wanting to borrow Mary again as company on her regular walks )
Nick reminded me of the book swap coffee morning tomorrow.
I promised I'd go
I had low fat noodles with mushrooms and quorn for lunch.
I am not a lover of quorn , it feels like I'm eating a cut up sanitary towel .
I completed the recycling and ironed a clean white shirt for my shift ( I'm wearing a smart shirt as I can't fit into any of their uniforms as yet.

As the dogs sleep on surrounded by halos of sun, I listen to the gentle podcasts tales of the Oslo detective Annika Standed and Bill Nighy's Charles Paris mysteries knowing full well that I will fall
asleep in the armchair quite soon.
I've told the iPad to wake me at 5 pm if I do so
Life plods on
I'll leave you with this delightfully funny clip of call my bluff...watch it to the end

  1. "eating a cut up sanitary towel".....today's splatter coffee all over the laptop moment.

Oh John, if you don't make me laugh, you're making me cry (I know which I prefer though) x

  2. My husband says the answer to bland quorn is plenty flavouring (bisto, oxo cubes, bouillion, red wine and loads of spices and to marinade overnight. You also need to add more liquid than you would with meat as it tends to absorb it much more. One of our veggie friends swears by his recipes. xx

    1. I like Quorn, as Curvy says, it depends on how you cook it.

    1. You must be a neighbour of Emma Thompson as well then. Doesn't she live opposite?

I thought his neighbour was Mrs Kravitz.

  4. What does a cut up sanitary towel taste like? I imagine it's something like Shredded Wheat? I presume you were referring to an unused one.

    1. My thoughts exactly. I do like quorn a lot and eat a a great deal of it. Should I try the occasional sanitary towel? Which is cheaper?

    2. DEfinitely Quorn. Sanitary products attract Pink Tax and are outrageously expensive!

  5. So,so true about the wasting time feeling before the first night shift, it's a strange thing. You can't do too much but have to do something. I'm between night shifts, last one tonight, but I can't sleep, typical. Hope your shift goes ok.

  6. Good luck with your shift tonight. Hope all goes well. x

  7. I've never heard of quorn but from your description I don't think I will be running out to get some any time soon! :D

    2. I've had a ten year break from having to work... managed to get it in my brain that i wouldn't ever have to go back to work.. Things change though and not always for the better.. ah well.. Just have to keep on keeping on... put one foot in front of the other and all that jazz.. but truth be told.. between you and me i'm still rather depressed about it.. chin up! Hugs! deb

  10. I will be interested to hear what your new job is like.
I commend you on making plans. I just looked up quorn and I believe that like the albumen which binds the fermented mushroom protein into an edible (is it really?) food product, plans will bind daily life into a livable arrangement.
    Or something like that.
Take care, John Gray. May you be well and at peace.

  12. Loved the video! We have something akin to 'Call Your Bluff' here in the U. S.....except we call it POLITICS.

  13. I've never liked quorn. I've eaten it twice and on both occasions I felt decidedly queasy afterwards.

I didn't know there was an all-female theatre version of Lord of the Flies. There was talk of an all-female film version a while back, but it seems to have bitten the dust.

  15. I loved Call my Bluff. Have a good first shift and sleep well tomorrow. Night shifts always a trial but I enjoyed driving home in the morning to a rising sun smugly knowing I was going to my bed as the others go bleary eyed to work.

Good wishes for your first shift John. Many years ago I did night shift (nursing auxiliary) 2 nights a week. I lasted a year, my body clock just couldn't cope long term. Bed will feel heavenly when you get home in the morning xxx

  20. I used to do two consecutive 12 hour night's when my three children were young, in a care home for the elderly. It was very hard work but so rewarding.
Hope your first night goes well.

Wishing you well on your first night shift in a while. I've been there, done that, too, in the ER and the OR. Usually in my experience, the best and funniest nurses work evenings and nights. Hope that's true for you co-workers. You'll be a wonderful addition to the mix!

I'll say "no, thank you" to quorn and quinoa.

  28. A famous friend of mine's email was hi-jacked the other day, and advertising was sent to all her multitude of contacts, including me. I now have Sandi Toksvig's email, but I think I will leave her alone. One of the others was Russell Crowe's. How much?

I went back to clinical nursing after a very long time away. No way would I do nights though. I always found the day before a dead day and it played havoc with my circadian rhythms afterwards, I could never sleep properly. Best of luck John - maybe you prefer nights.

  35. I dislike quorn too. Try TVP - textured vegetable protein, it has a much better texture than quorn and is still free with Slimming World.
