Today was a case in point, as Mary needed a trip to the vets and the car was parked over in Bangor.
No joined up thinking and a Welsh Terrier with an ear infection, not a good combination
So , village Elder Islwyn, as usual came to the rescue and gave Mary and I a lift to the station so we could catch the train, to get to Bangor, to collect the car.....you still with me there at the back?
I drank coffee on the virgin train while Mary jammed her head between the seats in order to bum something from the middle aged couple sitting behind us.
I think she managed to beg the ham filling out of a cheese and ham sandwich
Wonderful story and good for Mary- what is the point of being on a train unless she can use her guile to persuade others to feed her
ReplyDeleteYour description of your lovelies reminds of of my beautiful ginger girl who died on the 6th July- she is loved and missed beyond measure
Really appreciated your blog about your work with the helpline too- what a wonderful thing it is that you do there
Siobhan
Trust you gave Mary generous consolation on your return for having her ear(s) fiddled with by a stranger. She deserves no less for having been such a good girl which, we don't doubt, she was.
ReplyDeleteIt is surprising that you didn't also jam your head between the seats in the hope of scrounging a scotch egg.
ReplyDeleteWhat happens next with the car? Does it have to go back to Bangor and you do it all in reverse?
ReplyDeleteCool! I love train rides. Glad you found a way (a great neighbor) to take Mary to the vet. How clever of her to find a way to get food from other riders, sticking her head between the seats.
ReplyDeleteBut now I wonder. Is that how she got an ear infection, sticking her head in weird places?
My cat Jacob sends his regards to Mary. He says there's nothing quite like ham.
ReplyDeleteI know many people don't have one but I LOVE my car. It meant freedom to my mom, brother and I the day I started driving and I have loved to drive for the last 39 years.
ReplyDeleteHope Mary feels better quickly.
Now you have the car, keep it home! Yours and the animals need for it is greater than anyone else's at the moment. You have yourself and 4 dependents not including the new bantams to look after. Sleep in it or put a shovel load of horse s**t inside to stop anyone else from wanting to use it! (I'm a little tetchy today) x
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine what Rick would be like on a train. Not sure I'm brave enough to find out. Hope Mary's ear infection doesn't cause her too much discomfort.
ReplyDeleteAnother monthly payment, likely not something you wanted to have to take on,I'm sorry it seems that you'll have to.If that's the case I wish you good fortune in finding an affordable used car that will suit your needs and taste.I hope the rest of your day and evening will be more pleasant,Mary
ReplyDeleteMary, you're assuming that John will need to go into debt if he is to buy a car. For all we know he is perfectly able to buy a car outright, not everyone needs or desires to take on debt and we shouldn't make such assumptions without knowing the facts. Which I wouldn't expect John or anyone else to divulge, it's their business.
DeleteI'm skint Jan xxxxx Mary was kind of right lol
DeleteSometimes it is very handy to have a car...or truck.
ReplyDeleteThe logistics of your trip escape me. Why would you go on a train to fetch a car to take Mary to the vet? Sounds a bit involved. But then: What do I know about Wales and its geography?
ReplyDeleteHope Mary is ok. Ear infections, I only know those children have, are the devil's invention. Still, if she was able to solicit and stomach a bit of ham it can't have been too bad.
If you'd like my sister's recipe for treating ear infections (not for the faint of heart) do let me know. The Angel (he was about three or four at the time we were visiting my sister) was given it and, miracle oh miracle, that stinker cured him. Forever. He is in his mid twenties now.

Good luck finding a car of your own. Though public transport can be nice (in areas where it's in abundance) I would not miss my little Panda for the world.
ReplyDeletePublic transport in wales?
DeleteHo ho ho
That's what I meant to say, you can't do without a car.
DeleteA dog on the train? That's allowed? Nice.
ReplyDeleteIf she's interested in the content of sandwiches, that's a good sign!
ReplyDeleteHow are all your brood coping with the new and different family dynamic? They are probably affected too aren't they? Myra x
ReplyDeleteYes, Myra, keep rubbing it in. (Sorry, John).

Feel better soon, Mary! Yes, you need your own wheels now, man!
ReplyDeleteI took Tess into an Italian restaurant last Friday - she went straight under the table, lay down and stayed there til we left (the management gave her a biscuit for her good behavious)!
ReplyDeleteHow could you resist that little face appearing between the seats...she'd have got my ham! When you live rurally, a car is essential, as public transport is pretty non-existent. Not sure you can take dogs on buses unless their guide dogs...might be wrong.
ReplyDeleteCertainly in Greater Manchester you can take dogs on buses and trains, though probably not the tram. They travel free in buses too.
DeleteA person would have to have a hard heart to resist Mary's face! I hope her ears feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how I'd cope without a car. We have no public transport, only taxis.
Do u have Uber? It is a great service. I took my first one last week on vacation and it was a good experience.
ReplyDeleteIt's wales we only have two buses a day
DeleteA grumbly Berlingo?
ReplyDeleteI do hope your day has been successfull & Mary is feeling a bit better now John x
ReplyDeleteI hope Mary didn't need a trip to vet due to dietary problems. Also, when I saw the picture of Mary and your opening line, I thought maybe you were tired of sharing a car with MARY.
ReplyDeleteI hope Mary's ear infection can be controlled quickly. And love that she was feeling well enough to beg. Successfully.
ReplyDeleteHope Mary feels better♥ Sorry John the song "didn't we have a lovely time day we went to Bangor" popped into my head

Glad that there is nothing wrong with Mary's appetite, hope her ear infection clears up soon.
ReplyDeleteFind something you like, and enjoy it being yours, all yours.
ReplyDeleteWow. Your dog could go on a train? That's great! My dog, Murphy, gets car sick at the drop of a hat so our trips to the vet in my 10-year old Subaru are an adventure. He usually waits until right before our destination to throw up. But...I still love him!
ReplyDeleteJust had a painful 2 weeks with cars!!! Jeep (well serviced lotsa $'s) blew up driving home interstate..took another 3 days with 2 dogs to get home. Decided diesel too expensive 2 fix so bouughta 2nd hand car privately. Looked & sounded legit...drove home fine. 2nd day broke down..new starter motor required! Deep breath..3rd day..broke down..appears automatic transmission blown up Quote to fix ..nearly $3,000 AUD Talk about buyer beware or sucked in. Feeling rather deflated and still car less without transport..taxis would have been cheaper!!
ReplyDeleteThat Mary is the sweetest . .
ReplyDeleteA bit coy to a ham freebie . . .
Trying to see if this post will accept my comment . . ,
I have tried to post this comment on your newest post . . .
Giving it a try here . . .
So sad for you John . . .
Wish it would turn around, be like it “used to be.”
I am sure you wish the same . . .
I am hugging you in my heart . . . I
Strange it is, that this is accepted, the other will not.
ReplyDeleteAnd there's me thinking you already owned a car of your own.
