The Bell

For some reason I had ( or needed) a lie in today.
It was only the Church bell that woke me up around eleven and the video I briefly took as I staggered into the garden was suitably blurry eyed as a result.
I've been invited out to a trip to Chester Races today by family and Sunday lunch at a friend's house but I have given my apologies to both invitations
So it's coffee in my bucket coffee cup and radio 4.......
These are two of my best friends on a Sunday Morning
They are here every Sunday morning

  2. I didn't get up until 9.30 am. Late for me. Now everything today will be late.

  3. I woke up at 7a today; all is quiet outside my house and inside. I have coffee.

  4. I was awake early, and couldn't get back to sleep. Ask not for whom the bell tolls,

  5. A good sleep is what you need at present John, to recharge your batteries.
If you hadn't needed that much sleep, you'd have woken naturally far earlier than you did!
It will be dreadfully hot at the racecourse today anyway! X

  6. You obviously needed the sleep, I hope you didn't come down to chaos from the dogs and Alfred x

  8. Radio 4 has been the soundtrack to my life (and The Archers has been on great form lately!). It's good to be invited out and it's good to be able to choose not to go.

  9. It's 1pm and I've only just woken up! After years of insomnia I now seem to be able to sleep round the clock, it's very disconcerting. Hope you enjoyed your lie in, coffee in the sun is the way forward.

  14. I awoke very early this morning. I was hoping to sleep thru my 3:00 a.m. pee, but, nooooo! It is now 6:30 and I am on my second bucket of coffee.

  15. Well, you probably needed that sleep, John. And some days are best spent quietly.

  16. Richard Dawkins got into a lot of trouble recently when he said that he preferred the sound of church bells to the public call to prayer from a mosque. Your video just might - repeat 'might' - provide the answer of why he (and others) should think that. I make no further comment. I dare not.

  17. Did you listen to Desert Island Discs this morning? It was Pam Ayres today, she always makes me smile. I just love her accent.

  18. That church bell is bloody loud. I hope it doesn't ring out the hours like our local church does... but ours is far enough away to never cause disturbance.

  20. Sometimes you just need a down day...doing nothing slowly and letting the batteries do their long, slow recharge.

  21. The bell has a lovely tone. Enjoy your peaceful morning.

  22. Lovely lazy Sunday - just what the doctor ordered. I also have had a lazy day, reclining in my garden watching the bees and butterflies on the Buddleia and listening to the birds. A church bell would have been the cherry on the cake, but our little village church at the end of my lane doesn't have one.

  24. I've really got to give Radio 4 a try one of these days. I'm sure I'd like it. (I've been saying this for years and years.)

  26. How thoughtful of them to give you a wake up call at eleven.

Growing up, I remember when the nearby seminary/theology school got a clock tower built. The whole community was proud--we raised a lot of money and worked hard to build that clock tower. Oh, how we oohed and ahhed, dazzled and delighted we were when we first heard those chimes and bells ring loudly on the hour of the clock tower's dedication! How proud and amazed and excited we were to hear those bells and count off the gongs that signified the hour for the rest of the day. It was a wonderful sound...right up until eleven at night, when it rang again on the hour, and for the rest of the night! No one got more than an hour's sleep before the bells woke them up. It was a long, sleepless, loud night.

It became apparent that the people who planned for the clock to ring on the hour forgot to make adjustments for night time silence so the village can sleep.

  30. Sometimes apologies and missing an appointment or arrangement are just what we need as grown ups. A day to yourself sounds lovely ... well not counting coffee and radio four ;-)

  31. My first apartment was a third storey walk-up which just happened to put me up close to the bell tower of the enormous next-door church. Let me just say that I never, EVER slept past 10:45 a.m. the whole time I lived there, and since I am a night owl and love to sleep in on the weekends, this was a bit of a hardship :)

Constants are important when our world has fallen apart.

  36. My heart is happy hearing you interact so lovingly with your animal family. When you opened the door it was kind of like watching one of those unboxing videos from Youtube; little surprises around every corner. Happy happy

  37. Every Sunday for so many years , I would wake to Vivaldi/Four Seasons and a big mug of coffee.
Lately I take my coffee back to bed and discuss the plan for the day, with the cats.
    LOL
Actually, lately I’ve noticed that every day is pretty much exactly the same.
I have decided to change that.
Change can be good, sometimes even when you never wanted anything to change.
Life has so much more in store for us.
