Go On ....Hit me!

Meeting The Prof tomorrow in London
So tonight I went over the cottage sitting care plans with Cameron the teenage boffin.
I told him to help himself to anything he wanted
Gave him instructions for the wireless, tv remotes and satellite tv
And have left him some cash, beer, a massive pizza and Crisps
Now you are all going to post horror stories about leaving a teen in charge at home
Aren't you?

  4. No John I am not. In my years of teaching I found that teenagers rarely let me down if I trusted them.

  5. I have found that some teenagers are more trustworthy than people who have lived for years longer x

  7. It'll be fine, nobody looks at FB these days anyway.

  8. Not going to say anything - you trust him, that's what counts.

  9. From what you have said before, Cameron the Teenage Boffin is more mature than you are, so there's no need to "hit" you with teenage horror stories. Everything will be just fine under Cameron's watchful eye.

  10. Well, Cameron, Blogland is behind you! And as far as Winnie goes - may the force be with you!

  11. We used to gut a couple of young guys (older than Cameron, at least in years...maybe early 20's) to house sit for us when we went away. (We had an elderly cocker spaniel and birds.) I did the same things you did--left the house stocked with beer and junk food as well as a little cash--and they always enjoyed it and did a great job. Young men who still live at home can appreciate a place all to themselves for a weekend! I'm sure Cameron will be just fine. :)

  12. Oh, the stories I could tell about some of the house sitters I've had. Most of them involving my own children.
    Sigh...
Never any real damage done, though, and I have a strong feeling that young Cameron is going to be perfectly able and is trustworthy.

I remember being teenage boffin age. Mum and dad went out on Yew Year's eve and left us (younger brother and I) in charge of the house and minding our eleven years younger sister. We discovered a bottle of port in a cupboard that dad had been given. Mum didn't like it, neither did dad, so we drank it and topped up the bottle with water and Vimto. I don't think anyone ever noticed.

  19. don't worry. you won't know about the shenanigans. all will be well.

  20. My young man neighbor, known since his childhood, has been the best house/pet sitter of all time. I was so sad when he moved to NYC!

The opposite end of the spectrum is a friend who decided to get a puppy while she was house/pet sitting for me. Yes, she got a puppy while taking care of my house and older cat.

  21. My son and his friend were the young teens that did the the house sitting/do minding jobs around here. I am sure we are not the only ones that miss them now they're off seeking their fortunes elsewhere...

  22. Just the beer part.

  23. It would be pretty ignorant of us to second guess you. You know him.
When I was still in the Air Force and we were on Okinawa, Our 10 year old oldest boy used to pick up his 7 year old brother at school, and walk him home (we lived on base at the time). We trusted him to do that, just as you are trusting this young man. He must be really something for you to do this. It gives me hope.
    God bless.

  24. Nope. You know him well and you have confidence in him. He will rise to the occasion.

  25. A very quiet and serious teenage girl looked after my house and cat for a few days. Everything was fine but a short time later I found loose change and a receipt in my coat pocket for a bottle of absinthe and cigarettes. She apologised for borrowing my coat when I returned the change!

  26. Recent experience with a young and hungry housesitter (but for 2 weeks, not overnight) leads me to suggest that he take note of anything he consumes all of (coming home to find all the jam had been eaten, *after* I'd toasted the bread for bread and jam)

  27. I sense a movie. Is it "Risky Business"?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Let it go, let it go-o-o-o-o-o-o . . . let all those worries go!

Your lad has always sounded not like a teen but much more grown up and responsible, and I'm sure he will do a great job. And you have done a good job of being a considerate home/pet owner, leaving food and treats. I always appreciated having something put out for me when I babysat.

  29. He will be fine and I am sure half the village will check up on him. Enjoy London worry free.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Cameron will be fine, the animals will enjoy his company and you and the prof will enjoy London.

    cheers, parsnip

  31. Hell, no. I am not going to rip a new one. Everybody know to behave when one house sits for gay men. One thing goes wrong or broken, they'll beat your ass.

    ReplyDelete
  32. He will probably be extra careful with the weight of responsibility on his young shoulders .. And yes, I agree, the whole village will be advising him and watching over everything .. Leaving the babies with a sitter for the first time is always stressful ..

  33. I've been one of your frequent visitors for years, John, albeit a non-commenting one when I come by to read what's been going on in your lovely village. It's relaxing.

This time I was reminded of the time years ago when our policeman neighbour and his wife went on an overnight trip leaving their teenage son in charge of the house. He invited a few friends over. They invited more. Before too many hours had gone by there was a free for all party taking place that only ended when the police arrived. When his parents came home the kid was made to pick up all the detritus from the neighbouring yards and to apologize to everyone in the area who had been affected. I assume he was much more trustworthy after that.

I'm quite sure having read about your young friend Cameron that you have nothing to worry about.

  34. I was the teen people left in charge, once upon a time :)
I loved small children and babies even when I was a little girl, maybe because my brother was born when I was 10 .. but I loved babysitting. Not leaving my own babies with babysitters so much though .. I think this is normal for most mothers / parents .. leaving someone else in charge of their child is scary ..

  35. In the early '70s, Norma and I had to attend an art restorers' convention in nearby San Francisco. We left an 18 year-old college student in charge and wrote down where all our important papers were and where he should throw them in case of fire. He was so good, we recommended him to many friends, after which he fled to Hawaii and never returned.

  36. Sheesh .. left a 45 year old friend in charge of my house and dog for 8 days.
Did give him txt updates of where i was on the way home.
Arrived at 9.30pm to find cold house, fire not lit, dog tied up outside ... meh.

    Enjoy your trip.

  38. All will be well, Cameron's parents are nearby and he has plenty of company with all the four legged friends.

At one teenage party my brothers threw my eldest brother spent the evening vacuuming and his friends killed my goldfish with beer slops.

  39. Fortunately I have no teen to leave in charge....

  40. He sounds like a very responsible young man, I was at that age -

  41. It'll be fine ..... I think .....

  42. It's the behaviour of Winnie and the gang you are worried about methinks. It is mortifying when sitters refuse to sit a second time.

  43. Returned after a mid-20’s-age housesitter stayed in our place for four months and found bathroom ceiling, toilet seat, countertops, stovetop and nonstick cookware with scratches and gouges of vigorously applied steel wool. Guess housesitter felt he was in a pigsty. But still, even the ceiling???

    ReplyDelete
  44. No I'm not going to......

    ReplyDelete
  45. It’s like leaving children with the babysitter. You come home and the kids have so many fun stories! You take good care of your sitter with all the good perks! Enjoy your time away with the Prof.
