Chasing cars

"If I lay here.....
If I just lay here......
Would you lay. with me,
And just forget the world....."

This is a verse, not from a poem but  from a song,
And when I hear it, especially when I am alone, usually in the car listening to the radio, I invairably start to cry.

This happened last night, when I was driving back with our takeaway from the local Indonesian restaurant .
It was the song that was played incessantly on the radio when I took my first dog Finlay back and forth from the vets and animal hospital when he was terminally ill.

He used to lie with me all of the time
And we both used to forget the world together.

It's been ten years.
And I still cry when I hear it.....

What song does it for you?

  2. Know exactly what you mean. We lost our dogs ten years ago and I could still break down and cry. There was a song that I couldn't listen to without crying (can't remember it now) but the lyrics were "don't close your eyes" and it always reminded me of Jess. Animals have broken my heart but I couldn't have been without any of them.

  4. Crying is OK, it's liberating. The trouble is people might get into depresson when losing a pet.It recently happened to a woman in my neighborhood; she gets in and out of depression since she has lost her spaniel dog. Her siblings refuse to get her another one despite the fact that she lives alone. She used to take care of herself and the house, and she stopped after the dog died creating problems for herself and the family.

It is valid as and important as grief for a human but somehow it's viewed by all ( including the grieving person) as something as wrong

On a lighter note my dad used to sing Daddy's Little Girl to me when I was small and it is bitter/sweet. I am no longer a little girl and my dad has been dead since 1983. Songs and smells are so evocative. Love Andie xxx

All In Love Is Fair by Stevie Wonder and The Hungry Years by Neil Sedaka (perhaps the saddest broken relationship song ever written); O Holy Night by any great singer; Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own by U2 -since hearing Bono in concert talking about how it's about his Dad. You just have to read the words - the line "you're the reason why the opera is in me" kills me every time. Several great arias, and many, many others - I am very emotional about music...

Also, Elton's 'Sacrifice' which I played on a loop as I was packing my possessions to leave Cologne, Germany, where I'd lived for three years, to return to living in England. The tug on the heart is poignancy near unbearable - but sweet.

The song I weep at is 'Down Under' by an Australian band whose name now escapes me: I had been summoned by the local hospital where my mother had been taken the night before, and just as I had arrived at my office, a 5 minute drive away, the duty sister rang me and said, 'get here quickly, she's very poorly'. I was in the car and that song came on, thankfully the traffic was light and I sped to the hospital, but I missed my mother's death by 5 minutes.
