Old boys and their humans. Enjoy every day. We are trying to as well, our boy is 11.5 years, has cataracts, getting stiff and slow but still patrols his neighbourhood.
I've never had a dog, but I'm currently looking after my parents' 19 year old cat. He's stone deaf and brays like a donkey to get attention. Despite his diva habits he's a lovely old boy. Arilx
You make me cry! I was thinking of my old dog last night. When I knew the end was in sight I used to take his collar off and bury my hands in the thick fur of his neck. and love him...can still feel it now. He lived to just over 16, but was going blind and was deaf.
Please stop John. I am desperately trying to talk myself out of getting a dog when I retire in a couple of years (not doing a very good job of it and you're not helping). The thoughts go "don't need it, don't need the hassle", and so on and then the heart does a little leap. Bugger it. Anna
I know but .... the logical side of my brain say, whoopee, kids gone, husband (long) gone, freeeeedom. I suspect I will get one though (dog that is, not another husband). A
Always had dogs; love them, part of the family, had 'working' dogs i.e. border collies, jack russells, old english sheepdogs and also 'sweet' dogs like West Highland terriers. All different and all loved. Your boy cares for you as you do for him.
Our "old boy" is also blind. He follows us from room to room and lights up when it's bedtime and he can cuddle by our sides all night. We don't move the furniture and keep a strict schedule to accommodate his blindness. My best friend for the last 11 years deserves no less!
tell me about it. i am now officially sleeping on a blow up mattress in the basement because teddy can no longer do the steps. we are having a permanent slumber party.
Sweet William.
ReplyDeleteBless him. He is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet picture. Relish his company.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet . . . even the heartbreak is part of the sweetness. If we didn't love, we wouldn't hurt.
ReplyDeleteFills your broken heart to overflowing. Echoing jenny_o here.
ReplyDeletedear darling william!

ReplyDeleteThere is nothing in the world more lovely than an old dog.
ReplyDeleteAwwww . . .
ReplyDeleteCuddle hugs are the best . . .
Most of the childhood photos of my late mother contain a very similar dog. She would hardly move without hers.
ReplyDeleteHe is a special boy.

ReplyDeleteYes John, they break your heart and you can't help thinking back to when they were pups. Give him a cuddle from me.
ReplyDeleteThat's why they named a flower after him.

ReplyDeleteNever underestimate the love and companionship you will get from a dog.

DeleteI know the feeling - unfortunately. We lost our 2 dogs (aged 16 and 17) 7 years ago now and it still breaks my heart. I will miss them forever!!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry - old dogs are so heart breaking. Got one with me right now and it is so sad.
ReplyDeleteWe love them so and as they age, even more.

ReplyDeleteteddy died on sunday. my heart is broken.
ReplyDeleteDo dogs get glaucoma or cataracts and could get lens implant? Maybe his blindness is due to something else. Glad you still care for him.
ReplyDeleteHe's a handsome boy. Is he an Airedale or a Welsh? Both my Airedales went blind before they died. It seems to be a thing with them.
