I have bowed to flattery and as the dogs slept in the garden and a ham joint cooked in the oven, as requested I have snapped some more photos of the cottage in " still life" . There are not many as the cottage is small but you get the gist!

ReplyDeleteMe too. Wasn't quite sure of the difference but decided to bake as the label said bake. If I hadn't read the label I would have boiled.
DeleteSteeping then boiling the ham removes a lot of the salt content.

DeleteLovely. There's nothing I like better than to have a peek at other people's homes. I especially like the built in cupboard in the last picture. Are your wooden furniture pieces ones you have personally collected, or are they family pieces? It's so nice to have real wood furniture, rather than all the press board, fake, cheap items you see more frequently. Your home has such as cozy, friendly feel to it. -Jenn

ReplyDeleteI doubt you have ever read any of the Miss Read books, but your cottage looks just how I imagine any of the houses in that series of books to look. Cosy, comfy and homely full of well loved things passed down and taken care of in the best possible way. A lovely place to relax at the end of the day with your best beloved and your pets! You have a real gift for homemaking!

ReplyDeleteFor me, way over here in Canada where things are not nearly as old as in 'jolly old', all these photos...both the previous and todays....look like I might picture life in a fairy tale. How I envy you your surrounds. It looks so very peaceful and dreamlike.

DeleteLooks like our old cottage in Bicester, sadly torn down years ago to make room for modern row houses that all look the same. And now the same is happening here in the US, we have been offered cash several times by developers to clear our property and make way for town houses.

DeleteYour cottage is so inviting. Have you ever thought about hiring it out for filming? My sister had a commercial filmed in her home and got paid quite a bit for the inconvenience. The crew etc were there for best part of a whole day. Just think of all the stories you could tell the production team too!

It is my decorating style in a nutshell.
Older dressers, secretary desks, and my prize, a walnut daybed that my grandmother slept in. My dad slept on it in later years.
My dad rescued the pieces, had it restored by a master carpenter back in the late 50's. Approximately 125 years old or more.
All the touches with comforters, quilts, chairs, china, stoneware . . .
add wonderful style, assured comfort to your cottage home..
And then of course . . . I know of a doggie, cat, or two . . .
Lovely. Our home is furnished from antique shops or handed down family pieces. So much nicer than modern.We also have our pictures in blocks, I just love the chicken picture but you just need to tweak it straight. I'm a bit O.C.D. about such things. The jug of flowers is lovely and I am not going to mention the lack of an aubergine or avocado.It is lovely having a glimpse of your delightful home.

A home makes us feel safe. We surround ourselves with things that make us feel comfortable. Your cottage is a home filled of love! The extras like fresh 🌺, china, throws, and a kitchen filled with an aroma of something is the oven. It's beautiful!

ReplyDeleteI live in a small bungalow with five little terrier mix dogs ... two are part time with me (two are my daughter's dogs). I too love to take a peek at people's home. I decorated my home with unique finds from second hand stores and a few from items from Ikea. I'm now shopping for a three drawer small cabinet for my bathroom and take my measuring tape with me everywhere I go in case I find that cabinet. Your cottage looks warm, welcoming, cozy, and beautiful...

I don't think having a bigger budget/ more to spend could add anything to the love of/ in your home that what you have right now shows. The Gaudy Welsh pitcher is especially nice, and the mixing bowl. And the watercolors. Isn't that coal briquettes in the copper scuttle by the fireplace? That must have once been a gorgeous real open fire, is the mantel beam original?

Hi John. I love reading your blog. Your cottage is lovely and cosy. We downsized to our very small cottage in Staffordshire a few years ago and took early retirement last summer. We absolutely love our chilled life pottering around the garden and house. There's always something to do in an old property.We also have a caravan in North Wales that we go back and forth to during the summer months. You're so lucky to live there, its so beautiful. you neber know I may bump into you one day! Ju x
