I have bowed to flattery and as the dogs slept in the garden and a ham joint cooked in the oven, as requested I have snapped some more photos of the cottage in " still life" . There are not many as the cottage is small but you get the gist!
Note...not an aubergine to be seen!
I cooked a ham joint in the oven this week.
ReplyDeleteI was going to simmer it but changed my mind
ReplyDeleteMe too. Wasn't quite sure of the difference but decided to bake as the label said bake. If I hadn't read the label I would have boiled.
DeleteSteeping then boiling the ham removes a lot of the salt content.
DeleteDont forget to skim the crud from the top of the water
DeleteLovely. There's nothing I like better than to have a peek at other people's homes. I especially like the built in cupboard in the last picture. Are your wooden furniture pieces ones you have personally collected, or are they family pieces? It's so nice to have real wood furniture, rather than all the press board, fake, cheap items you see more frequently. Your home has such as cozy, friendly feel to it. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteThe grandfather clock is a family piece of a dear friend.after her mother died it was to be sold with all of the other furniture , remembering it i bought it..it is very dear to me
DeleteIt looks just as a cottage should look. Ko-Zeee.
ReplyDeleteI doubt you have ever read any of the Miss Read books, but your cottage looks just how I imagine any of the houses in that series of books to look. Cosy, comfy and homely full of well loved things passed down and taken care of in the best possible way. A lovely place to relax at the end of the day with your best beloved and your pets! You have a real gift for homemaking!
ReplyDeleteBeing comfortable is vital in my home
DeleteLove the Miss Read books. Comfort reading at its best.
DeleteYour cottage looks delightful, but I doubt it is often still.
Ooh I love how it looks - very cosy. I want one!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely and much as I imagined your home. It suits. I wish I had a wood stove. Big sigh!
ReplyDeleteYou have a lovely home . I doubt you have one ornament we have though the dog from the farm down the road that keeps coming up and lying on the kitchen window sill . He seems to be interested in everything I do .
ReplyDeleteOh My Goodness this is so sweet. Is he a small dog or a large window sill ?
Deletecheers, parsnip
Difficult to say he at breed that looks a bit like a hairy dachund , he has been collected now by his owner , I expect he will be back at some point lol
DeleteI love the grandfather clock.
ReplyDeleteOh, so pretty! And I love how the light falls through the windows. Now, why do you have a coal bucket full of, what looks like, avocados?
ReplyDeleteAvocados? I knew one day you'd ride to my rescue, Iris. And the box behind the avocados looks like a job lot of salsify (after it's been peeled) - also known as poor man's asparagus.
DeleteI think I have got stars in my eyes.
U
I thought avocados too.
DeleteWarm and inviting!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to see your home John... I think Still Life would be a great category for the Flower Show.... maybe with the stipulation that every entry have a flower in it although the flower does not have to be the center of attention in the photograph..... Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteFor me, way over here in Canada where things are not nearly as old as in 'jolly old', all these photos...both the previous and todays....look like I might picture life in a fairy tale. How I envy you your surrounds. It looks so very peaceful and dreamlike.
ReplyDeleteNice cozy cottage. John, you do have an eye for detail. Very nice pictures.
ReplyDeletethe last pix must be the prof's chair. a lovely cottage indeed.
ReplyDeleteNo thats my chair AM
Deleteah. I always though you had the couch and the prof had the chair.
DeleteVisa versa.....
DeleteLooks like our old cottage in Bicester, sadly torn down years ago to make room for modern row houses that all look the same. And now the same is happening here in the US, we have been offered cash several times by developers to clear our property and make way for town houses.
ReplyDeleteHow sad x
DeleteYour cottage is so inviting. Have you ever thought about hiring it out for filming? My sister had a commercial filmed in her home and got paid quite a bit for the inconvenience. The crew etc were there for best part of a whole day. Just think of all the stories you could tell the production team too!
ReplyDeleteNot much room to swing a clapperboard!
DeleteI think it is absolutely perfect .. everything about it. I want one just like it :)
ReplyDeleteReally is cozy, John.
ReplyDeleteO, to live in a place where the word and concept of "cottage" is still alive and well. Your habitat looks inspirational AND aspirational. Most of all I love the DoG snoozing in the sunbeam.
ReplyDeleteIt was mary. The older dogs can be trusted to sleep in the garden alone
DeleteLove your home and the look of comfort . .
ReplyDeletePlus the timeless pieces that add such warmth to those things newer.
It is my decorating style in a nutshell.
Older dressers, secretary desks, and my prize, a walnut daybed that my grandmother slept in. My dad slept on it in later years.
My dad rescued the pieces, had it restored by a master carpenter back in the late 50's. Approximately 125 years old or more.
All the touches with comforters, quilts, chairs, china, stoneware . . .
add wonderful style, assured comfort to your cottage home..
And then of course . . . I know of a doggie, cat, or two . . .
Lovely. Our home is furnished from antique shops or handed down family pieces. So much nicer than modern. We also have our pictures in blocks, I just love the chicken picture but you just need to tweak it straight. I'm a bit O.C.D. about such things. The jug of flowers is lovely and I am not going to mention the lack of an aubergine or avocado. It is lovely having a glimpse of your delightful home.
ReplyDeleteLove the visit.. Never, ever heard of an aubergine before Ursula came along. Why so cranky though?
ReplyDeleteMe or her?
DeleteIt's lovely. Just how a cottage should look!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful home. Who is the artist (second picture) or have they been collected?
ReplyDeleteThey are a collection of watercolours from the 1800 to early 1900
DeleteWhat a pretty little corner of the world!!Please don't mention the 'A' word!!!
ReplyDeleteTo me that looks like a dream home, small, cosy and warm looking.

A home makes us feel safe. We surround ourselves with things that make us feel comfortable. Your cottage is a home filled of love! The extras like fresh 🌺, china, throws, and a kitchen filled with an aroma of something is the oven. It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYour home looks lived in and enjoyed and a place where you can relax - and that is what a home is for. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm suitability jealous. I have a monstrous house in a suburb in Minnesota and would trade in a wink.
ReplyDeleteYou have "the touch" for making a home inviting.
ReplyDeleteWhereas our house has stacks of documents (husband's) and miscellaneous papers and sewing (mine) on every horizontal surface!!
It would look better if i had more money
DeleteYou must be as snug as bugs, looks lovely, how did you manage the absence of animals? Do you happen to know what the jug with the flowers in is, I think I have a cup and saucer (family) that is a similar pattern.
ReplyDeleteIts a typically welsh design. Its called GAUDY WELSH WARE"
DeletePerfection.
ReplyDeleteI live in a small bungalow with five little terrier mix dogs ... two are part time with me (two are my daughter's dogs). I too love to take a peek at people's home. I decorated my home with unique finds from second hand stores and a few from items from Ikea. I'm now shopping for a three drawer small cabinet for my bathroom and take my measuring tape with me everywhere I go in case I find that cabinet. Your cottage looks warm, welcoming, cozy, and beautiful...
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThere are loads of Aubergines in the coal scuttle !!! x
ReplyDeleteThey are dark plums
DeleteWe already decided they are avocados. Get with the program john.
DeleteWe already decided they are avocados. Get with the program john.
DeleteJust lovely!
ReplyDeleteThere is one in each photograph ! Its a bit like " where's Wally" for veggies
ReplyDeleteI love your jugs 😀😁😂
ReplyDeleteI love yours too
DeleteLovely, very homely and very 'you' 😊
ReplyDeleteVery welcoming is your home. Pretty much perfect as are the couple who live in it.
ReplyDeleteSo what are the round black things in the basket by the stove? Your home is just lovely.
ReplyDeleteLovely!
ReplyDeleteWarm, charming, and welcoming. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you were supposed to eat Wally after you found him.
ReplyDeleteYour cottage is certainly my "cup of tea". I love the grandfather clock and that built in corner cabinet is absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. Love the sun streaming in. That chair in the corner might be mine. Sorry because you may not have realised that!
ReplyDeleteYour home is so inviting and cozy, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely, an oasis of calm and quiet beauty for you and the Prof. [except your doggies & Albert's contributions]. I don't think having a bigger budget/ more to spend could add anything to the love of/ in your home that what you have right now shows. The Gaudy Welsh pitcher is especially nice, and the mixing bowl. And the watercolors. Isn't that coal briquettes in the copper scuttle by the fireplace? That must have once been a gorgeous real open fire, is the mantel beam original?
ReplyDeleteBUT I asked to see your garden, please. Not close ups of flowers, but how it looks when you stand on the back steps etc, or sit out there? Pleeese!
lizzy
your home is charming! does the grandfather clock work? it is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteUtterly charming, peaceful and welcoming!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Home.
ReplyDeleteIs that a schnauzer drawing that I can see behind the flowers? I like the hen pics too.
ReplyDeleteI love your cozy, warm home. I could feel instantly at home there! Well done!
ReplyDeleteA true reflection of those living within.....lovely.
ReplyDeleteJohn I am always do happy when you post a picture of that Gaudy jug with flowers in....makes me happy that I have the exact jug handed down from my mother in law.
ReplyDeleteThose ???? Were a picture of the Canadian flag......hmmmm.
ReplyDeleteMardy
Are you a closet interior designer?

Hi John. I love reading your blog. Your cottage is lovely and cosy. We downsized to our very small cottage in Staffordshire a few years ago and took early retirement last summer. We absolutely love our chilled life pottering around the garden and house. There's always something to do in an old property. We also have a caravan in North Wales that we go back and forth to during the summer months. You're so lucky to live there, its so beautiful. you neber know I may bump into you one day! Ju x
