Mary watching the Prof eating fruit cake

The Church Bell which heralds Sunday service woke me up approaching eleven.
The dogs and Albert were all waiting patiently on the bed for me to get up.
I swear I'm going to climb up on the Church roof one day and stuff an old pillow around the clacker

I have not seen Gaynor the mad organist for a while, I thought this as we passed the lytchgate where I could hear a dozen reedy voices singing the hymn. I think I shall buy one of those snakes made from coiled springs( the ones that you can cram into a small box to scare kids with) and when I am next cleaning the church I shall put in under the organ key cover.
I shall look on eBay presently.

Mr Jones is home after his stroke and waved from his window when I passed, and I had a bit of a turn when a smart man who looked remarkably like an undertaker passed me in the street and walked through old Islwyn Thomas' front door which was open.
Apparently he was one of the congregation from the Welsh chapel service and not an undertaker!
Islwyn remains very much alive.

The Memorial Hall's new caretaker is Sandra S, who, I heard,  is getting on great guns with the village Christmas Fayre to raise funds for it's redecoration.

Gay Gordon is spending most of his day asleep, Stan told me as he was cutting back his berburis, it's something to do with his diabetes!

Mary is excited, and has been most of the week. She has not seen autumn leaves before, and chases them at every given moment. I'll have to watch her with traffic on the main road .

Chinese takeaway for lunch!

    1. it's john's expressive writing AND the fact that the little village is so far away from the noise of a big city.

    2. Me too, Jan .. always .. it is a tiny movie scene played out for me each morning .. I just can't quite master some of the names/pronunciation ... my Welsh is non existent.
Bless her heart, I can just picture little Mary dashing back and forth chasing leaves and jumping around. Rake a pile for her to throw herself in :)

    2. There was a Chinese food drive-thru in So. California named Chop-Chop. And there was a drive thru coffee kiosk in Virginia named Java the Hut.

  3. You paint such great pictures of life in Trelawnyd. And, oh how I'd love to see Mary experiencing piles of leaves for the first time.

  5. We hear church bells in our little village late Sunday mornings as well, but I imagine the scene in your village is a bit more idyllic. Can you possible capture Mary's leaf chasing on video? That would be fun to see. -Jenn

    2. My village just doesn't have the history and charm that seems to be prevalent in England / Wales. When we went to England this past summer, it didn't seem to matter where we were, there was always something marvelous (in my opinion) to look at. Here, very little is over 150 years old, there are varying degrees of upkeep to properties... Maybe I'm just creating a storybook setting in my head of where you live, John.

  8. The Methodist church in the valley chimes every quarter hour. It's lovely, even on Monday afternoons, playing cards with them in the basement.

  9. You bring your village alive on the screen John! I giggled at the thought of a pillow stuffed around the clacker. How do you pronounce Islwyn? xx

  10. My father was a church organist-the fake snake idea is a winner.

  11. Well, I'm glad Islwyn is alive and well, and Mary is enjoying the leaves. As for berburis, I have no idea what that is!

    1. "berberis" is the correct spelling Steve. You must have heard of that you prickly plant!

  12. I've made note of the snake ... possibly a perfect gift for some unnamed person.

Somedays I am awakened by hearing birdsong; somedays it is the sound of approaching NY Sanitation Dept. trucks. Somedays both of them at the same time.

Thank you again for putting us in the picture of your village life.

  19. Every single day of the year, twice daily, at 8:00am and 8:00pm, our church bells ring the "Ave Maria".
I like them, but sometimes there are days I just can't cope with the sound!
    Mary is a cuddle.
    Greetings Maria x

  20. All quite heartening news from the village then - apart from stuffing rags round the clacker.

  21. Poor Gaynor! What if the snake in the box trick gives her a funny turn? You'd never forgive yourself.

As for clackers, it is improper to even consider messing about with them, let along muffling them. All that clackers need is a good clean once in a while and perhaps a quick burst of WD40 lubrication.

  24. My first apartment was a third-story, slanted-ceiling hole-in-the-wall located cheek by jowl with the belfry of a huge church. Those bells were loud. I do love church bells from a distance, though.

  25. We lived a couple of blocks from a very old stone church about 20 years ago .. Every Sunday the bells rang and I just loved that , I felt like I was living in another world .. perhaps John Greys world..
On 9/11, those bells rang and rang ... it changed my feelings about hearing church bells ring.
