ILL

It's a lazy blog today.
I've got some sort of bug which hit home in the middle of the night and I feel like shit.
I'm sure it will pass by tomorrow but today, I feel as though I've been hit by a bus.
I'm coughing so hard that I'm farting like a machine gun!
When I am ill, I look like this......
But feel like this...
I vont to be left alone

How do you cope with illness?
What sort of patient are you?

  1. Oh John. You do look rough in that picture! I hate being ill because no-one looks after me when I am! I cope with illness by doing a google search to rule out anything suspect and then I drink plenty of water, rest and try to sleep it off. I console myself with the fact that nothing lasts forever and each day I will improve. Get well soon but don't ask the Prof to make you any parsnip soup!!!

I usually try to ignore it and pretend it's not happening. It's gotta be pretty awful for me to give in and take to my bed.

  3. I see you have your pyjamas on in the first picture. Did Chris snap it for you? I am with Dave Martin on illness. Try to ignore it and hope it goes away.

It depends whether it is a faked illness or a real one. Whichever, I am about to die and I expect and receive full bedside care if it is serious.

  6. Omg I had laryngitis about 6 weeks ago.. if that wasn't bad enough it left me with a terrible after cough that left me wanting to vomit everytime I coughed... I hated being ill... I spent every day in bed for 10 days and only got up in the evening to try to be sociable... I nearly ended up a sociopath! It has taken 6 weeks for the cough to subside.. I do not do illness WELL!!

It's doing the rounds, John. If it's what I've got it won't shift quickly. I've been coughing like that since Thursday and feeling like you look in the first pic. I don't make a good patient but sometimes you have to give in and rest up till it shifts. Hope you feel better soon. CT.

  10. Oh dear, hope it passes soon! I've had a cough for about a month now, just to cheer you up (luckily, it doesn't make me fart). I'm like you, just want to be left alone when I'm ill....not a chance of that though, husband fusses over me like an old woman, drives me mad. I suspect he's trying to show me what he'd like when he's not well!

  15. That's not an ordinary illness, it is the result of a Norfolk curse. I thought you may have done one post without mentioning your arse or asking questions from your followers, but even illness doesn't keep you down.

  16. You'd think I'd be good at it, having had to deal with untreated, undiagnosed lyme disease for over ten years, but actually now that I am so much better I resent every day that I can't enjoy life to the full, so I am an awful patient now! (And I give doctors the shits by being rather untrusting and doing my own research. If I hadn't learned to do that, I'd still be living a miserable half-life and wishing I was dead.)

  17. I was a sickly child. Asthma from the age of two, which for much of my schooldays my mother refused to acknowledge - I was "putting it on" and had to to chores and school work instead of resting and getting better.

These days, and especially after last year's drama, I make a point of harnessing the power of complete rest and vast amounts of hot tea as an aid to recovery.

  19. I am a big wimp. I had a husband for so many years who loved to take care of me, make me laugh, make me feel better no matter what. And he was brilliant at taking away worries and fear.
Now he is gone so all of those things are back in my life .. I have been very lucky so far and not had any illness that a pharmacy can't fix .
I hope you feel better soon, sleep ... hot tea and soup ... sleep.
Those are the best medicines. Oh and lots of love.

Commiserations, John. The worst about a true cough (think TB minus the blood) that it takes energy out of you before you can even think about cost/benefit analysis. The benefit, in theory, that you'll shed weight without going for a run or to the gym.

To illustrate what sort of patient I am (and nothing has changed over the years): One Christmas Eve (I was in my early twenties) I was due to visit my parents. I came down with the fever from hell at about two in the afternoon. On my last reserve I phoned my parents (from a phone box) to tell them the gig was off. Naturally, about half an hour later both my father and my brother turned up on my doorstep on instruction of my mother to take me "home". As much as I loved my mother's hand on my feverish brow when I was little, all I wanted was to be left alone. To this day, I still feel a little guilty that I made them leave without me. So that was a truly solitary Christmas. However, my neighbour - the lovely Peter, tall, blond, a hairdresser and, what do you expect, gay - and I shared a wall of our adjoining appartments. No bull, our beds divided by some bricks of how much depth I do not know. So, throughout the night he'd send me little knock knock signals to see whether I was still alive. If, in my delirium, I didn't immediately respond he'd let himself in, wipe my feverish brow, refill my jug of water - and left as quietly as he'd come in. An angel. I never knew he'd been there.

    Wishing you a leisurely recovery,
    Ursula

  54. I hope you will be feeling much better very soon.

My colds usually start about three days before I actually come down sick. My husband brings the bug home and will be coughing and sneezing and not washing his hands and touching everything in the house. That drives me nuts. So I become Howard Hughes-like and start wiping everything with surface sanitizer or alcohol and repeatedly washing my hands.
Then that compulsive craziness stops when I come down with the cold symptoms. I don't know why I even try to prevent the spread by all of the hand washing and cleaning stuff. That never works, the virus is in the air. One time I even tried wearing a surgical mask. That is how nutty I get with trying to prevent the inevitable. I couldn't stand it and it caused my glasses to fog.
My husband is lucky. He gets a cold and sleeps, wakes up if he has to work, and then sleeps some more. He sleeps the cold away.

When I get a cold I develop extreme insomnia and end up dozing in the recliner so I can breathe better. Vicks helps. So does ambien (taken as directed, only). I become so grouchy that it worries my little Pomeranian, and then I end up feeling ashamed, hugging and apologizing to the poor little guy. My husband has learned that I am a b**** when I have cold and doesn't bother me. Usually I am better in eight very long days.

Oh, it's only November, only five more high cold risk months left. Colds and viruses are what I hate about winter.
Does anyone else have dogs that seem to know their owner is coming down with something before any symptoms appear? Several times in the past, a day or two before I developed a sore throat, my dog would insist upon repeatedly getting up in my face, and then smelling my mouth. That is something that he does not normally do. I think he can smell infection starting.

  62. Oh John, I hope by this morning you are better. I never get ill as I have no-one to look after me (no self-pity intended, LOL!) I have been nursing a sick and ageing husband since May this year. By Sept he almost died in the doctor's surgery but made it. Since we've moved away from our previous place, he has been ill twice here in the mountains. Here we are 20km from a doctor we don't know (and I don't want to get involved with) So I nursed him... He eventually shook himself out of the depression, illness and lethargy when I told him that I'd looked on Youtube to learn how to lay out a body. xx He's right as rain now!
