Off To Work

It's 6.37am and I am sat in my still place having coffee.
I'm off to work in a moment and wont be home until after 8pm.
I had a couple of wines too many last night.
Only a couple, for I went to a ward night out . Something I rarely do nowadays.
It was a leaving bash for 6 nurses who have moved on to pastures new.
For the most part....Six talented nurses.
It was sad to see them go. But I understand why most of them have done. Sometimes we have an inflexible rota system and the off duty for full time staff can be punishingly difficult to cope with especially when you have a life outside work.
I talked to a few junior staff members too last night.

When I used to manage , all those years ago now, I like to think that I tried to make things a bit easier for all staff........
Hey ho

  3. I do have an awful lot of sympathy. Our local hospital has far too many bank staff and there's no continuity in care.

  4. Good workers should be cherished. We all need positive strokes. We all need motivation and we all need to feel that our efforts are appreciated. It isn't just about money.

  5. That seems like a lot of nurses leaving in one go.

  7. I have been in both worker and supervisor positions and believe this helps to be a more understanding supervisor. Have a good work day. When my son was small and I picked him up after school, he would say "Mama I had the happy day" So John have the happy day!

  9. The world of work is punishingly only about profit and billable hours anymore. I hope the six who have departed find otherwise.

  10. It is always hard to say good bye to people you like and respect at work. Losing six at one time had to be difficult for the hospital and the patients they serve. That is a big hole to fill.

  12. I am sure you did make it easier John. I was the same in Senior Management teaching - you try to make it as easy as possible for people who work hard and who you respect for their ability and their attitude. As with nurses, so with teachers, many are leaving the profession because they just cannot cope with the pressures of the job - and who can blame them.

  15. Then the really hard part begins. Training new staff OR not getting any new staff and taking over responsibilities of the six who have moved on. I hope you enjoyed your wine...may not have the opportunity for awhile. I remember working many back to back shifts during staff shortages.

  16. Anonymous1:45 pm

Seems nurses everywhere are overworked and underpaid. I've spent enough time in hospital to see the reality of it and I think nurses are truly amazing people, one and all.

  17. Hopefully the mass exodus has sent a message to the administration that they are not good managers! I just spent 3 days in hospital for a bad disc and couldn't do anything for myself. My nurses were a true lifeline.

  18. Our country is slowly and surely grinding to a place that will not be good. We are losing too many good nurses, doctors, police officers, fire personnel .... and all the other trades that really matter and are so necessary in all our lives.

Cuts are turning our country from Great Britain ...to just Britain., it's so sad :-(

  20. My daughter has been a trained nurse for nineteen years. She worked hard and cared about the patients, she had little, if any, time off sick and always felt guilty for even a day sick. However, she now has another career, nowhere near nursing, it is paid well and she keeps being told to slow down. She cannot believe that she can work flexi; have a coffee when she wants one; is actively told to take a break and the change in her has been unbelievable. The tense headaches are going, and she looks forward to work and learning more and using her brain. Perhaps if all the staff who took days, nay weeks off sick had come in when they should. Perhaps if she had not been expected to take up the slack for all the lazy people she worked with, perhaps then she might still be there. All that training, all that energy wasted on working in an area that she was totally taken for granted, perhaps then she might still be there. I for one am glad to get my daughter back. Love Andie xxx

  21. Health care scheduling is never easy - only making it harder with nonexistent staff. We have the same troubles here...

  22. "difficult to cope with especially when you have a life outside work" - and don't we all have that, or deserve to? I have a feeling you were one of the good managers. A good one makes all the difference.

    Hope your shift goes/went well.

  23. I repeatedly tell my team not to use me as a role model (55 hr week worked for 37.5hrs pay) and try and be fair but it's the few that spoil it for the many as usual.
Picked up on call last night cos someone 'forgot ' they were away for their birthday !!!!! It's not all about poor managers.

    1. Sadly doing what you do makes your team feel under pressure to do the same!. I never leave work at 8 pm as much as I try as manager always wants to talk!. I miss bus and end up waiting another 30 mins, curse her nightly!.
