Late One

Late post today......been out and about trying to find a new car....which is tough given the fact there is only one bus out of the village .
Thanks to village elder, Islwyn  who dropped off some coal for us.......its amazing just how you rely on a car when you live in the country.
I think I've found one though...and it's ever so clean!
Not one dog snot stain to be seen ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!

We take so much for granted in this modern world.........don't we ?
Water out of the taps
Electricity to run the cooker
A supermarket 3 miles away
We are only one short step away from social disintegration
Come the zombie apocalypse.

  1. A professor should be transported in nothing less than a Bentley but I bet you have pinpointed an old brown Astra from a dodgy guy called Islywn who lives on Bruton Park. Anyway, if it is a proper car Chris should always ride in the back. You will need a chauffeur's cap.

  3. I think about that all the time- how with such a little bit of failure on our modern systems, we would all mostly be helpless. Not even counting zombies.

  4. Crikey John, a car with not an animal stain in sight - how long will that last? No Scotch egg crumbs either ?
I have a waterproof cover for the back seat when the dogs are in the car. Brilliant idea, and given how many assorted animals you transport, it will save you a lot of vacuuming and scrubbing before you take the Prof., or any other worthy, out. Is the Prof practising his "wave" in readiness?

    1. A waterproof cover for the front seat when Mr John is in the car might be even more necessary.

(By the way, if I may insert a personal note, I have been touched and most surprised that various people who comment here and must have perused my Andrew MacLaren-Scott writing persona blog have made kindly enquiries about me, due to an enigmatic last message here and on my AMS blog. I do expect and hope to remain in reasonable condition for some time yet, thanks, and I am touched that some people I don't know seem to care. My priorities have changed somewhat however for reasons of no consequence to anyone else, but I may still dip in here to make inappropriate and offensive observations from time to time).

  5. I hope I am not here if the zombie apocalypse should come! I don't drive so I don't know how I would fare if I lived in an isolated village. I would be forced to make friends!!!

  6. Only 3 miles to the food store? Consider yourself very lucky! Hope it turns out to be a wonderful car for the two of you and all the lucky animals.

  8. We got rid of our car 20 months ago as we just couldn't afford the running costs any more. I've been on 16 buses in the last 2 days and tomorrow I have to return a mini-oven to Argos - it will be strapped onto a sack trolley and taken on 2 buses to get it back there! Thank goodness for the reasonably cheap weekly bus ticket I treat myself to every 6 weeks or so. It gives me unlimited bus travel within the city, though there are drawbacks. Some of the passengers today were like the walking dead without the urge to feed, and the smell was akin to something decomposing!

    1. At least city living usually means public transport is on tap....here it doesnt exist

  9. You are certainly correct about modern life. I have made a couple of decisions to move away a bit from some of the "less worthy" ways in my opinion. The first one is to actually write letters to those who are important to me, hoping that when I am gone they bring to them the same nostalgic but loving feeling I experience when I found old letters in some forgotten book or box. The joy of re-reading the ones from my late husband have pushed me more and more not to rely on emails for one thing because they never convey, at least to me, the warmth of holding something someone you love held before it came to you. No power failure could ever take that away from you, because there are always candles to read them by.

    1. I dont think so..the Prof demands clean lines

    2. The Prof may demand cleanliness, reality tells me it's not going to happen. My husband is the same - couldn't keep anything tidy - forever cleaning up after him.

  11. We had a berlingo ( it was red) once upon a time, and we gave it to our son for his birthday as he had no car at all. He didn't like it ……not streetwise ! At the time he should have been grateful for any sort of conveyance, but he wasn't ! He now has a VW !!

    1. We bought a new car one time and my husband out of the absolute goodness of his heart, gave his old car to our son .. who had only been driving for about a year.
I don't think the car lasted a week before he rear ended someone at a toll, then had tires stolen while parked at school .. he left it parked on the road until the weekend when he could get a tow truck out there ... someone stole the car before the weekend.

  12. I've been inundated with work stuff and have not been keeping up with blog reading. I detest shopping for new vehicles, but like you, live in a place where there's not public transport.

I picked up coal from someone who lives about 20 minutes away. They have a wood stove and had the coal left over from when her parents lived in the house and her dad had a coal stove in his workshop. It was so handy for me to drive over in the pickup truck and carry it out of the cellar to dump in the pickup's bed.

  13. 5 years ago I bought a Nissan Cube. I will never look back. One square car for one square girl. You'd be the talk of the village in one of those! :)

  14. Whatever sort of car it is I would recommend a good set of seat covers while it is in clean condition, and front seat covers that whip off in an instant for when you are carrying people rather than a pack of dogs. It's what I did, the car still smells of wet dog but at least you and one passenger can travel relatively hair free. :-)

If this one turns out unsuitable, let me know I can come and give you a lift to the local dealerships ...... in my virtually hair free but doggy smelling car!!
