Lady Mary

I've hardly had a minute to wipe my arse let alone write a blog entry.....
I had forgotten just how maintenance some puppies can be.

Well Mary is a confident little bundle. She is not shy. She is not nervy and she will need careful handling as she has the potential for becoming rather too big for her boots.
Her grandfather was supreme champion at Cruffs in 1998
So I suspect like Lady Mary from Downton
" It's all in the breeding"
William and George have accepted her immediately. They are taking a somewhat quiet approach to the interloper and she in turn has rather brightly " not pushed things too far"
She head rubbed Albert and has not chased him as yet, but I see he is ready with one paw raised everytime she appears. There will be tears before bedtime , I suspect but that is the way of things.
Winnie , sulked most of last night. Strangely she seems more afraid of the puppy than anything else, and only brightened up after I gave her a rather robust fanny rub with her second best flannel.
She's keeping her distance as you can tell from the video.........
Bulldogs hate change.

Right I have a casserole to make, 2 hourly toilet training to start and Old Trevor next door wants me to shake his apple trees

  1. Isn't it funny how pups and children always approach the dog /person that wants to be left alone! How can you tell when Winnie is sulking? I have an expression like Winnie whether I am happy or sad! Great to see your dogs, hear the birds in the garden and your lovely voice on this grey and gloomy October day!

She turns her face to the wall and stands there unmoving with her eyes shut

  5. I so enjoyed that. I just love how calm
William and George are . Mary is ridiculously georgeous. Winnie is sweet as ever. I had a laugh when you stated Winnie has cheered up after avoid fanny run with her second best flannel. Fanny rubbing can certainly cheer things up especially when it's a robust rub. Still laughing ...

Body language tells me all will be well. The day will come when she will be Old Mary, no, dear old Mares. Err, has it occurred to you that you are close to the age when a young dog might outlive you? Chris, I bequeath to you the care of.....

  7. Mary is gorgeous ~ as are all of your pooches, John :-)

I used to "dog-mind" my sister's black lab when she was working and I well remember the day he met Amber, the greyhound we adopted. Zac kept looking from me to Amber and back again, with an expression that said "she isn't staying, is she??" After that, he just ignored her whenever he was here LOL

  9. It looks like Mary is doing her best to win Winnie's favor. Puppies are so much fun but also a lot of work, but we all know that you are up to it.

  10. Winnie will accept her eventually. As long as she gets her fair share of you!

  11. Here we go again. Every time I think it's safe to return, there's a new fanny to be rubbed or fresh shit to clear up.

  12. Loved the video! Winnie was looking a bit stressed to begin with, but seems to know she will have to accept her new sister after all. She seemed to be tolerating Mary's efforts to become best friends rather stoically. Oh, yes, puppies most definitely are a lot of work. We do tend to forget that as time passes, but you really do seem to be coping very well!
This was a delightful report! Hope your day continued pleasantly.

Under what circumstances would best flannel do the rubbing?

  16. Brilliant little film.

It really is a full time thing with pups isn't it, but with lots of laughs to lighten the workload. Like Mary, Charley fitted in quickly and well with the other dogs and soon found her place in the pack, that of peacemaker actually, we really miss her funny little puppy ways and her ability to diffuse the Jack Russell spats that erupt every day or so.

I hope you have lots of fun and lovely times with the new lady in your lives, she's one very lucky doggy to have found you all.

  27. Only having just adopted our newest addition the beginning of September (rescue cross labrador/mastiff) I wish our household was as calm as yours!! We range from ignoring the giant puppy to flattening her as we establish our pack hierarchy. But I wouldn't have it any other way. You Mary's a beauty!!!

  28. awww she did her potty outside. Gud sweet dug Mary.
Even at The Square Dogs advanced age I always say awwww what a gud dug when they poo outside.
She will wear Winnie down with her sweet puppy ways !
    Mary is beautiful.
I am calling up today about a 10 year old white shorthaired mixed with some black spots. I saw his photo several months ago and if he is not to big (big dog off leash attacked thehamish and threw him around) I will go look at him.
I am the opposite way from you, I want to fostering old gud dug that no one wants. To old and handicapped to have a puppy.

    Thank you for the video.
    cheers, parsnip

  29. I feel a deep connection with Lady Mary. It's almost as if we behave in similar ways and Winnie - Winnie would be like nearly anyone who has to be around me for long. ;-)

It was quite similar when we brought San Geraldo home. He was only 6 weeks old when we brought him home (poor wean was going to be taken to a 'shelter' with an extremely high kill rate otherwise) and Lily - our Grand Dame of a doodle - thought that was highly irregular. He, of course, wanted Mama and took one sniff of her and pounced, trying to nurse. For the only time I can recall, Lily started yelping and took off running, trying to find someplace to hide from him.

They play together frequently these days.

  30. She is adorable John. Glad the others are gradually getting used to her. George seems very interested,William seems to be pointedly ignoring her and as for Madame Winifred [ well she is pacing up and down debating in her mind exactly how to approach this problem. Do I detect a slight limp?

  31. She is so sweet, and it looks as though she is determined to win Winnie round ! She'll just keep at it until she's worn her down.

  32. Lady Mary is just too gorgeous. I love her confidence. And of course, Winnie takes the cake with her disdain. Good luck with the potty training - I persevered with my [now five month old] Lab pup and within two weeks he was housetrained! xx

  33. I also loved the video! Mary is such a cutie-pie. I wonder if George feels he can sidle up to her the way he would've done with Meg but for his low-standing in the pack and her high one forbade it, I expect.

Poor Winnie; I hope that once she sees you love her just as much as you've always done, she'll be all right.

  35. Having a new animal is just like bringing home another human baby. I can remember I thought the older children seemed huge and well-behaved. The little lump in the carry cot just demanded and demanded. The older children were polite and trying to help and just did not know quite what to do. I expect you feel a little like I used to do . . . A little guilty at upsetting the status quo; part of me remembered the quieter times before the new baby. Also you feel so unbelievably that you want everyone to like each other. Well that all comes, the baby fits in with the rest. Just takes time. Mary is very confident, I wonder if she would have been as confident if there had been no other animals. I assume she has come from a 'family' situation. Think of the Waltons they all managed!! LoveAndie xx

  37. I only missed a couple of posts and I come back to find a new 4 legged friend in your pack. Congratulations on sweet Mary. Winning looks like she is having a good comforting back scratch along the wall all the while ignoring the new interloper.

  39. Catching up, anyway, the question is "will she be a digger or a chewer?" I've had one of each, and the chewers have always been easier to deal with during puppydom.

There seemed to be a little bit of 'kissy-kissy' from Mary to Winnie, which is a good sign.
Winnie's probably just a bit peed off that there's a new and very attractive female in the house, we women are very insecure at times!
I'm sure it won't be long before they're besties, Mary may even give Winnie a whole new lease of life!

  49. Mary is a cute pup. Over the years we have had German Shepherds and one day decided to get a springer pup. Didn't know whether we were coming or going with her boy could she move. We are now back to the laid back German Shepherds lol. Enjoy your pup she is a welcome addition to the family.

  50. I surely hope you don't believe "a minute of the new dog" is quite enough?? Little Mary is pretty calm for young'un. She's smart enough not to try to jump on or roughhouse with Queen Winifred. That poor dear looks like she's searching her lost crown and scepter.

  51. Oh, this makes me want a puppy. My Pomeranian cross passed a few months ago and I do miss a dog around. But I have a cat that is 20 years old and I don't feel a pup or kitten would be to her liking right now. But she is sweet. Praise her highly when she does her business where you want her to.
