Blue Birds Over.....

To me , a holiday gives you the opportunity for a lie in.
Unfortunately The Prof and his mother are early risers, so no matter how quiet the house it at 7 am, you know that some surreptitious activity is afoot!
Hey ho.
Today, tis " Dover and Whistable " day ! Hurrah!
The Prof's father is taking us to the cliffs and to some interesting tunnels inside......which will be nice as long as I don't get car sick! ( an unfortunate affliction I seem to suffer from in other people's cars) and then it's a sea food lunch towards the famous oyster beds.......having said that, it would take God almighty himself to get me to down an oyster...I've always thought that they look like lumps of snot!

The prof eating a bowl of the slippery little suckers

Anyhow.....here are the latest on line International Novelty Veg Entries for the flower show.....a teddy and a shark!
Enjoy...........more exciting stories from the Thanet Coast will be posted later xxx

  4. I hate all seafood except for fish!!! What seafood does your M.I.L like? I wanted to set you off again after yesterdays discussion about what fruits you are both partial to! I love the veggie entries. The teddy looks like Sooty of Sooty and Sweep fame.

  5. Those tunnels have only just been opened to the public. It will be a fascinating visit and I am quite jealous. I hope you blog about it.

  6. I have to agree with you about the oysters; despise the things.

  7. I used to live in Whitstable for a while. Faversham's nice too. Oysters just taste of the essence of sea to me.

  11. There are some things I cannot swallow - oysters are one of them.
Before my husband died, I could loll in bed all day but now I am up at 6 am with the kittens .. life sure changed for me !
Dover... I want to see it too !!

  12. It's not what they look like; it's how they taste that's important. Delicious.

I've never had raw oysters and no matter how much I love seafood, it has never appealed.
I have had them cooked however, in a dish that was called 'carpetbag steak' which was a steak pocketed like a pitta and stuffed with oysters and served with a red wine sauce - delicious. Cooked, they have the texture of mushroom and the flavour of trout. Lovely :-)

  14. I've heard that if you sit in the front seat and look at the road, it helps keep car sickness under control.

An oyster sliding down your throat is like the elixir of a god, or something else. They should really be chewed a bit to be savoured. Better you are carsick on the way there than on the way home after a belly full of seafood.

  16. I love oysters, even raw, with a squeeze of lemon. Oysters smoked over an open fire on the beach are better than raw. But best are fried oysters with a tangy horseradish sauce.
Like Andrew says, I hope yo udon't experience seafood see food.

  17. I absolutely adore oysters John but, unfortunately, they don't seem to like me !! My sister loves them too but she has had food poisoning and once salmonella from them so she doesn't eat them anymore !
If that hasn't put you off even more ……….. !!!! XXXX

  18. Wait! You're staying with the Professor's parents? This is not the romantic get-away I had envisioned for the two of you.
    Oh well.

I'm an early riser too, after years of very early starts my body clock is set for 5-30!
Of course, waking early doesn't always put me in the best mood, some days I wake up Grumpy, other days I let him sleep on!

  20. I love oysters but will never eat them again after becoming very, very sick from a bad one.

  21. I've eaten raw oysters. They slip down the throat easily, similar to clams on the half shell. I do prefer them cooked, however.

For car sickness, get Sea Bands. They are elasticised bands that have a plastic ball that presses against a pressure point in each wrist that helps with sea sickness, air sickness, and car sickness. Some pregnant women have used them to help with morning sickness as well.

they are available at many chemists' shops here, especially if you're on the coast.

  22. The only time I've ever eaten oysters was in a certain restaurant on the Champs-Elysees (Note: As I was being treated I was NOT the one paying, but I did catch a peek at l'addition - Mon Dieu et Sacre Bleu!)
The look of them didn't put me off and I was advised to add a bit of a certain sauce to the innards before tipping the shells to let it slide down the gullet. Despite the sauce (J'ai oublie exactly what it was) I just remember the entire thing lacking any distinctive taste at all. I wouldn't attempt them now, even if I had the money because, as you most likely know, I'm veggie anyway!

  23. I'm with you about the snot.
Cute Teddy and good shark, glad I don't have to judge.

  24. Novelty veg brilliant - so wish I had that sort of imagination.
Thanks!!! for the comment on oysters - I had just about talked myself into eating one the next time I found them on the menu. Not now though.
    Enjoy the hols.

  25. Oh, I tried one once and the texture is worse than it looks. All one can taste is the sauce. Just disgusting.

  26. I love the cucumber shark! But I have the same reaction to oysters. Just the sight of them is repulsive. Needless to say, I've never eaten one.

  27. Love the cucumber shark :-)

I always quite like getting up early on holiday, it makes the day stretch out wonderfully in front of you. Whatever you do don't try an oyster and THEN have a car ride ... a recipe for travel sickness if ever there was one!!

  28. John,
if you get car sick when not driving, sit in the front seat. If you have to sit in the back seat sit straighter and look forward.
And what ever you do do NOT read a book, your phone, i pad anything.
I used to get terrible car sick when younger and this helps for me.
It finally got better when I hit 40.
Hey did you get my happy prickly pear (the only fruit growing here now) happy zombie ? Or did I send too many.
Once I started playing with the fruit and veggies it was hard to stop !

I adore the teddy and the shark ! so much fun.
    cheers, parsnip

  29. Personally, I think oysters taste like lumps of snot, too, John. I really don't understand their appeal...

  30. Now I have the Vera Lynn song ringing in my head all day....could be worse.
I'll leave you with Hemingway's quote regarding oysters:

“As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.”

  31. I still get carsick if I have to sit in back so I always get the co-pilots seat when not driving myself .. There are certain things I refuse to put in my mouth or ever swallow - oysters are on that list.

    ReplyDelete
  32. We ate small snails dipped in garlic mayo when we lived in Spain...snot on cocktail sticks ! not sure if I'd eat them now & would not like to try Oysters me thinks. Husband likes Mussles.... no no no !

  33. Cripes! Your chap is tucking into plenty of those famed aphrodisiacs, and with tabasco sauce too. What a guy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Go ahead and pass on the oysters, more for the rest of us.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Love oysters! My favorite way is lightly steamed with pepper vinegar or hot sauce. Over steamed and they are blah, just like rubber with no taste. As Wilma said, they are great cooked on an open fire too. I love them raw, but rarely eat them any more, particularly if I don't know where they come from. Can't wait for oyster season! You should try them fried or maybe in an oyster stew, better yet oyster dressing! Yumo! …and they must be very, very salty! Fresh ones, as in not salty, aren't fit to eat.

I've never eaten an oyster before, but they look just so gross and I have no idea IF I'll ever try one!
That kiwi bear is super cute! I ate one this morning >:)

  37. I can't sit down wind of an oyster let alone eat one. Make sure you always sit in the front seat in the car, I suffer from the same affliction it's horrible.

  38. I love steamed oysters, and all seafood, really. But I grew up close to the coast and my family ate seafood regularly.

  39. Have a wonderful time. Don't know that I would like the oysters but the white cliffs, oh, what a wonderful thing to see.

Has Winnie called to check on you?

  40. I love smoked oysters but I'd never eat a raw one - not when I'm sober, anyway.
I've eaten shark once and wouldn't recommend it.
I like the photo of the veggie shark.

  42. I'm another one who gets sick in the back seat of a car. I'm not great in the front passenger if someone overdoes the braking and accelerating either. It does feel a bit 'me me' to always have to be in the front, but it saves on greenness. Whenever I possibly can, I drive, or I don't go. :)

  48. I'm with you on the oysters. someone must have been pretty damn hungry to try one of those first time around. however, my friends did get me to eat some grilled oysters last year and they were OK.
