A Royal Night Out

Ok two old queens from Trelawnyd going to the cinema may be termed by some as A ROYAL NIGHT OUT , but I am, in fact referring to the Julian Jarrord comedy drama film, which gives a fictional  slant on the VE night out in central London by the present Queen and Princess Margaret.
Apparently the Earnest Lillibet ( Sarah Gadon) and the doe eyed innocent Margaret ( Bel Powley) team up with an RAF deserter, a group of Soho tarts and a royalist gangster with a heart of gold, as they negotiate the drunken crowds in Trafalgar square ....yeah right!
The two leads are perfectly fine with Gadon making a prim but spunky Quuen in waiting and Powley playing Margaret for laughs........but the film doesn't quite work as a piece of storytelling as the movie feels just a series of filmed set pieces rather than a smooth cohesive narrative....with some depth
5/10

Elizabeth and Margaret live it up

The new cinema needs to market itself a little better too
There were only 8 of us in the audience!

  1. " two old queens from Trelawnyd" - no, two handsome young husbands out on the town!

and the whole film premise sounds so far-fetched.

  4. I trust that you know it really happened. Elizabeth and Margaret really did slip out of Buckingham Palace on VE Day and mingled with the crowds. Nobody recognised them. The Queen once said it was the best night of her life which must still really piss off Prince Philip who, according to the cleaners at Buckingham Palace, once had the stamina of a Hereford bull.

  5. Gosh with just eight in the audience the cinema isn't going to last long. We better get are arses down there and support it ourselves!!

It was a true story, but obviously not told well and embellished too much to be what they thought the film audiences would want to see.

They might have well just have redone the Audrey Hepburn film where the princess escapes the confines of the royal palace, I can't for the life of me remember the name of it, I have it on Dvd I should go look :-)

It's Roman Holiday, and a far better film than A Royal Night Out, by the sound of it!
I love R.H. but with eye candy in the form of Gregory Peck, it couldn't fail with me!

  6. Our little cinema often shows to one or two. The other Friday my friend E (who is in her seventies and always goes every Friday night) was alone in the audience and really enjoyed Shaun the Sheep!

  7. You arrived at the same rating as I did, J.G., though I'd taken a rather more circuitous (i.e. long-winded) route.
Although you didn't mention Emily Watson's star turn as the Queen Mum, I hope you enjoyed her performance as much as I did, and agree that it was as uncannily close to truth (as we'd imagine) as much as Rupert Everett's George VI was miles off-target.
An 'okay' film, but not much more than that.
(Desperately sad about the thin audience, though. They've got to watch it or it'll be 'curtains' - maybe literally - all over again.)
