Bulldog Telepathy

If you hate cats then it always transpires that every cat in your immediate area will make a bee line for you.
Cats delight in torturing people
There is a touch of a sociopath about a cat
Dogs on the other hand seem to go all goo-goo eyed at the prospect of being all supportive
There is nothing subtle about them
They instinctively know if something is hurting inside you and will try every trick in the book to redress the balance of things .
Mental pain seems to bring out the " dog" in a dog...if you see what I mean

This afternoon Mrs Trellis called by to drop off her unused dog food.
It must have been somewhat of a difficult visit given the fact that everywhere you look in the cottage there seems to be a dog draped over something, but Mrs Trellis was putting on a brave face as she sat down for a chat.

Immediately Winnie was by her side , gazing intently up into the old lady's face and with seconds she dived under Mrs Trellis' legs like a great big fat puppy, lifting them high up in the air, time and time and time again.
Mrs Trellis couldn't help herself and lost herself in a fit of laughing. And the more she laughed the more Winnie performed .
I have never seen her act in this way with visitors..... Her usual behaviour is to stand , look, snort, sniff and ignore.
She seemed intent on brightening Mrs Trellis' day.

Animal behaviour never ceases to surprise me.

Can't say I agree with you about cats. I have had many that were very intuitive. Siamese cats are sometimes compared with a dogs. Even my Gracie growls when someone pulls in the driveway or knocks on the door!

  15. I've had cats that sensed and reacted to emotions. I had one cat who tried repeatedly to kill himself when his (I'm sure) identical twin brother died. And of course cats wind up terrifying people who are afraid. It's a cat's job to be curious prior to being aloof.
    That said, good for Winnie.

If you really must compare dogs and cats (why?) I'd say dogs - unless well trained - have no manners and are merciless opportunists. Follow the leader types. Which is fine - after all they do run in packs. And someone needs to know where they are going.

Neither have I ever encountered a cat that wouldn't give a wide berth to someone who doesn't like cats. A dog? Forget it. You might be terrified (which I am not) yet they will insist to slobber all over you (which I hate). In fact I hate it so much I can't kiss people who let their dogs lick their faces. It disgusts me. So, my dear John, you are quite safe from me. Let's shake hands instead. I'll bring the rubber gloves.

Ah... agreed... Dog slobber is a dreadful thing, but as John often attests they can lather a person is much worse than that as well. I like dogs, I like them very much, but not in my house, or my face, or shagging my leg, of leaking little spurts of piss all over me because they seem pleased to see me (as some do). They belong outside. (Sorry Winnie).

By the way, I have just read in the journal Science that there are more than 3 chickens in the world for every human... 20 billion or so of the little cluckers at any one time (not that most last long). Just thought you should know

  31. I went to a display of attack-dogs in France once. Dobermans leapt for the neck, German Shepherds grabbed arms and legs, but Boxers just sidled up to the (padded) victim's crotch and just latched on. Right on, without letting go.

Cats kill you as you sleep, usually by sitting on your face.

No Tom. If a cat wanted to kill you it would do it slowly, while playing with you as you tried to crawl away. You have misjudged them dreadfully.

  32. Winnie is such a darling. Dogs can be amazing in their response to people suffering. I call my two poodles "doctors" when myself or my husband are unwell. They will not leave us. However, their medical treatment was pretty bad recently with hubbie injuring his ankle. Both dogs landed on his injured ankle as they leapt up on to the bed to keep him company . I'm surprised you didn't hear the screams in Wales!

  40. Even when cats are showing affection they can be painful, though I hardly think that they know the effect they are having - as when on my lap they purr and pound, with claws digging deep into flesh - and in the most sensitive of areas too!. When Blackso sleeps with me, which is most nights, when he's ready to rise and wants to wake me, if trying to lick my eyelids open doesn't work he'll draw a clawed paw over my face then even over my neck. So woe betide anyone who fails to respond to that ploy. (Ouch!)
Now if only they were all as empathic as big, lumpy, adorable Winnie!

    ReplyDelete
  41. That's a sweet story about the dog. I am one who used to dislike cats mainly because I didn't understand them and didn't like their dander and claws. Of course, as you've pointed out, they would also make a beeline for me whenever I entered a cat lover's home. I shuddered, lol. Years later I did indeed adopt a cat because a friend needed to find a home for a stray. I grew to love and appreciate my cat though at first I was afraid of handling her for grooming, etc. I discovered she was also afraid of me and then I became her protector. Whenever I wasn't feeling well, she would lie on the bed by my head and try to make me feel better by her presence and her gentle meows. She's gone to cat heaven and I miss her sweet presence.

So true about cats - the buggers always home in on me and if they catch me by surprise and actually make it onto my lap, they do that awful kneading thing with their claws while looking at me with an evil smirk....

  49. Lovely Winnie, it was most likely just what Mrs Trellis needed, a good giggle.

Cats always seem to go to the person that likes them least because that is the person that looks at them least.

Cats don't like being watched , so if you have a few people sat in a room and a cat walks in all the cat lovers will look towards the cat hoping it will come to them, a person who dislikes cats will not look the cat in the face, hence the cat will walk straight over to them seeing them as the least confrontational person in the room.

There you go a bit of animal psychology.
