Hershel The Vet

We returned from the vets around 7.30pm. Chris was A little bit non plussed  because the belly pork I was cooking for supper had been fucked up because of the unplanned visit, and Albert was fucked off because the vet stuck a large needle into his paw to retrieve a large thorn!
In the seven years he's been with us, it's the very first time I have ever seen the usually sweet natured cat spit at anyone.
I have met the George Clooney Vet, the Russell Crowe vet and the Irish Coleen " potty mouth" vet so far, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that the senior " Hershel" vet was on duty tonight.
A pleasant old chap with a easy manner , I was reassured to see that Hershel clearly loved his patients.
There was nothing pedestrian about him, and he was all smiles .....it was reassuring that the smiles were aimed at Albert and not Chris and I.....
He was my sort of vet

The thorn was removed and antibiotics duly administered
And an hour later we were back at home bickering  over cooked and cold pork!
As we bickered I opened the cat carrier and Winnie strode heavily forward and stuck her entire head into it.
Of all the dogs strangely enough,  it is the selfish and demanding bulldog which has forged the closest bond with this skinny wide eyed little cat.
In Winnie's mind, her pack was complete again
And she was content.as she took in big gulps of Albert smell....

  2. May I be so intrusive as to suggest you stick a big jaggedy bacteria covered thorn deep into Chris's foot then after a while ask him if spooning out Albert's dinner is more important than Chris's ability to walk without pain.

  4. I am glad that Albert is on the road to recovery again. And one of our black cats who looks very like him spits and growls enough for them both...

  6. Happy to hear Albert is on the mend. I love black cats. (Also, I just got to the point in Walking Dead with Hersehel the doctor, glad to know he survives a little while!)

  7. Winnie sounds rather like my Lily when it comes to members of the feline tribe.... if she sees Connelly, she has to run up to greet him.
After several years of this, Connelly has finally stopped panicking at the sight of a large mass of cottonwool bounding toward him.

  9. Albert is a beauty to behold, John! Hope he heals quickly and get back to prowling the neighbourhood.
A good vet can be difficult to find......an experienced one is usually the wise choice.

  10. Healing thoughts to Albert....you've had a rough day, better have a glass of wine and take a load off . But doesn't Winnie just keep giving ! She is such a doll.

  13. We've been lucky to have warm, caring vets. I couldn't do without them. Sounds like your village has good vets too, and a lot of them.

  14. Glad it was nothing too serious, John. He'll be back to hunting in no time flat.

  15. Cats always choose the one that likes them least.
Winnie must have been reassuring herself that Albert was indeed home and okay.
Glad to hear Albert will be okay.
    Hope you salvaged dinner!

  16. My dogs seem to enjoy their visits to the vet's. I think they simply enjoy meeting other dogs.

  17. You make my vets look mundane and boring!

  18. I so detest seeing an animal suffering so it's some relief to know that Albert's okay now (the little poppet) - as well as Winnie keeping you all on the straight and narrow - well, 'narrow', at least.

  21. Albert looks like a cat that will stand no nonsense….hope he is out and about soon. He is beautiful. Apparently people are not willing to take black cats from rescue homes. I can't understand that at all!

  22. Getting a thorn out of a cats paw....not a job I would like to take on. Good old Hershel

  24. I like old vets. They were taught to treat animals *before* the perceived bottomless purse of pet insurance came along....

  26. If you bought Albert some practical little cat boots, he wouldn't get thorns in his feet. At the same time you might think about some plastic pants for Winnie to prevent smelly bitch dribbling. I am thinking that barbie pink would best suit her.

  27. I remember the ordeal of trying to get one of our cats in the cat basket. First sign of it and she was off! We learned not to get the cat basket out until just before she was due to be put into it. (We learned our lesson the day we were moving house. Removal van went off and the cat having spied the basket disappeared for three hours.) We would pick her up and walk backwards with her until we got to the basket. One of us would be ready to close the lid quickly while the other tried to get her in it. Nightmare! It would have been easier getting a hyperactive octopus into a string bag. When we got to the vet we couldn't get her out of the basket because she'd cling on. We bought a smooth plastic carrier thinking that she'd have nothing to cling on to but it made no difference. She just braced herself against the sides using her paws. Hope Albert feels better soon.

  29. Aww, poor Albert. I'm glad the vet set him right again. As for Winnie, animals get very stressed whenever someone is missing, don't they?

Thank goodness it was nothing more serious than a thorn and he will be back to normal soon. I'm glad you've found a veterinarian that loves his work. So many vet offices are just like a factory.one body in...one body out and not so much as a kind word for the animal. We had a lovely vet when we had cats. It really makes a difference.

  31. I have always liked all the very wealthy vets that I have taken my pets to when they need help. They are kinder and more prompt than my own doctors.

I love that Albert has a friend in Winnie.

  34. Good vets are worth their weight in anything good! We have one who treats our big cows like family members, sewing up I injured teats like plastic surgeons. Life is good when the black cat is on the mend on Halloween!

  35. The thorn removed, spitting cat calmed, soft hearted sod eating his dinner, peace and tranquility once again achieved???????……..Oh bugger it’s your house…..oh hell three out of four isn’t bad is it?

  36. Wishing Albert a speedy recovery. Ah Herschel, I'm still not over his death at the hands of The Governer. It was like seeing Santa murdered.

I have to always skip your WD posts since I am DVR-ing this season so I can watch it all at once.
