Wedding Plans

We  booked the post wedding meal yesterday with Jo, the delightfully chipper cafe manager rom Osborne House in Llandudno.

Chris' buzz word phrase about the wedding has always been " I don't want any fuss" and so we have not only chosen a venue that has a faint wiff of " gay boudoir" about it but we have settled for a regular cafe restaurant that we know very well...one that isn't known for catering especially for weddings.
It is also our favourite eating place since we came to Wales.
We are taking over the conservatory on the evening of the wedding and so we are limited to the number of guests we can invite ( always a sticking point for weddings I guess) the final list has been made ...I just hope everyone will understand that we would have liked more "bums on seats " but
have a ceiling of how many bodies we can cram into one room!
My " let's have as bigger fuss as possible " idea of a big village hall party where everyone we know will be invited to a " scotch egg and nibbles" extravaganza is on hold until later in the year, which I think is a wise move.....Organising two do s  24 hours apart with a cast of thousands is perhaps too much to ask of me...even though I am a veteran of 7 flower Shows and 4 open allotment days!
A second party in the summer, where my sisters can flex their artistic muscles sounds great fun to me...the wedding day will tick Chris' " less is more" mentality.... It's a great compromise and is one that we are both happy with......
Mind you, it could be said that I have the bigger challenge than sorting out bunting in all this
For the subject of my attire needs seriously addressing !
What the fuck am I going to wear?
I am very conscious here, that I am presently typing this blog, whilst sat in bed, with a pair of bent spectacles  on ( one of the dogs sat on them yesterday).

This slovenly type of behaviour drives Chris bananas ( he is fastidiously precise when it comes to personal grooming) and already this morning he has requested that I don't come to the wedding looking like "Baron Hardup"
I suspect I will need a personal dresser
A very patient personal dresser.

  1. you need a proper butler/valet to "get you prettied up". no crocs, no sweatpants, no glasses askew for YOUR big day!

your venue looks loverly; I cannot be there in person, but I can wish you well from my "window to the world" (my laptop).

  2. What the fuck am I going to wear? I couldn't have said it better myself John.

  3. Shame it's the Scots who have the kilt as I think you'd look great wearing one. I'm sure you will scrub up nicely.
I like your chosen venue & a village knees up sounds wonderful ... can we join in virtually please ? x

  4. The venue looks marvellous and I am sure that you will scrub up well and do Chris proud on the day, but dressing for occasions is a right old faff. BTW were you wearing the specs when the dog sat on them?, hope not.!

  5. The reception venue looks fab. Make sure you do too! And hey, well done with the Gwyneth Jones cup :-)

  6. Stay as sweet as you are John, if true be told, Chris wouldn't have you any other way.

I am the last person to advise on sartorial splendour, but you can't go wrong with a black jacket over a crisp white shirt with a black bow tie. You are a gay man of a certain age, so no one will look any lower than your shirt. Or would they...........

Ah, a comment about kilts. That would be nice, but may go against your grain.

    1. Oh,another lover of 'crisp white shirts'!lol He's a Gael too - well, sort of - so a self-coloured kilt would be in order.

  9. Oxfam often sell brilliant quality suits. I call them dead men's suits. It is important to sniff the armpits before buying. A nice shirt from M&S would also be good - make sure there's plenty of neck room. Your tie should have a multi-coloured splatter pattern so that any accidental slavering or other oral spillage will go unnoticed. What will the dogs be wearing at the wedding? May I suggest matching tartan coats? Perhaps Royal Stewart or McGregor.

  10. A nice blazer maybe in that lovely oxblood colour that is quite in vogue and will suit you. A shirt with a pattern in it, something with personality, and no tie because really, it's not your thing. Grey or black strides.
You will look like you, be comfortable, smart, and have things you will wear again. Or hire a suit and play along :)

I sympathize with Chris - we would have been happy to grab a couple of witnesses off the street outside the register office and called it right - but other people have expectations. No matter what, I'm sure it will be a great day for you both!

  12. There was me thinking you would have a 'Walking Dead' themed wedding :)

  13. What about that fabulous ermine coat with the 10ft train that Liberace used to wear on stage?Suits you sir!!Failing that, grey morning suit, crisp white shirt, pink satin cravat, sorted! And a decent pair of specs!xx

Oh no...that awful feeling that the stained T's and ripped jeans are not going to cut it for this outing....I hate that. Maybe you could rent something?

  17. Enjoy the day and don't fret over the attire....personally I think nothing looks fancier than a black tux with bow tie.....for both of you. When is the date again???

  18. What are you going to wear? Why not ask Chris to help you choose an outfit...he has to look at you all day.

  19. Sounds like fun, the challenge is balancing the tastes and desires of all involved. Enjoy the planning and the day. The village hall party sounds like fun.

I my sister remarried in February, the guys wore Hawaiian print shirts. It was very comfortable and casual.

  20. You live with the perfect stylist so I can't see what the problem is John….. just don't get dressed until the last minute 'cos I can just see you clearing up one of Winnies sloppy presents in your finery !! XXXX

  21. It looks a lovely venue, and the idea of a separate party in the village hall sounds great! I won't comment on your attire for the day because there are so many good suggestions already.

  22. What are you going to wear? Easy - a huge white dress with a 15-foot train carried by four small boys in blue velvet suits. That should settle a few arguments.

  23. I think MrsC has the right idea for attire on the big day….or let Chris choose something might be the way to go! You do look a bit manky in that photo…..the computer changed "manky" to " manly" but I had to change it back…hehe!

  24. Lovely venue.
Now what to wear? There have been many good suggestions so I am sure you will decide on something suitable.
I am sure Chris will help you, but please get your glasses fixed & polish your shoes!

  28. What are you going to wear? A smile........all day long.
Also..there is a lovely pic of you over at Lady M's in NZ....you are leaning on a fence and looking very handsome......and my advice would be to let Chris organise your wardrobe x

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think it depends on what Chris is wearing as you want to complement and not outdo each other! Well groomed hair, polished up specs and a pair of cufflinks will suit you nicely. As you did so well with getting bloggers to join in with the novelty veg category at the flower show, why don't you get your readers to email you a drawing of suitable attire for you? I t will give you a laugh if not a few ideas!

Getting really excited about this as I am sure all 'your fans', John.

You must find someone who is willing to coach you through this......you want the wedding night to be perfect, right?!

  31. I like both ideas !
Smallish wedding and later the big party.
When I was married my two dogs were the flower girl and groomsman. They both had flowers and bows.

A nice suit and tie that matches what Chris is wearing can't be beat.

    cheers, parsnip

  32. Oh my, it is in MARCH 2015...! You can't possibly be thinking about it already?

  33. The setting is elegant. I have a 70's-era black sharkskin suit somewhere, and a couple narrow black ties you can have.

  34. That venue is very, very nice. Well done on that! I'm still smiling at the comment about hoping your glasses were not on your face at the time they were sat on :)

  38. Beautiful venue! Our wedding (25 years ago) was divided into 3 stages. First the registry office in a beautiful historic building. Only 22 guests allowed so family only. Second stage a buffet in a local hotel for these 22 guests and extended family. Later on a buffet/party at in-law's house for family and friends. We were on a very tight budget and didn't want anything too big so this suited us fine and everyone we wanted to invite was included. I think your idea is brilliant. Exciting times.

  39. I think it's a good idea to limit the number of guests and have something bigger and more carefree later on. The first time Favorite Young Man got married, he and all the male attendants wore black pants with dark blue shirts and black ties. It wasn't expensive and they looked great in the photos. And in person. I don't think you have to have a tux or an expensive suit. Be comfortable and look pleasant. You can pull that off. Everyone will love you if you go naked. What you wear doesn't matter.

    Love,
    Janie

  40. I would say to let Chris choose your formal attire for the day. Congrats to you both. I do love the venue.

  41. We did the marriage commissionaire, to hotel bell hops for witnesses and returned to our home province for the reception. Which we booked in a restaurant and invited around 40 people to lunch.

It works well, it was done this way because it was a second marriage for both of us, and the husband's sister in law wanted a big do to have her four daughters be flower girls at.

The day is about you, Chris, (the dogs if desired) and what you want.

    Much love and good wishes.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Let Chris tart you up. Now let's get down to what the dogs are wearing. Pink tutu for Winnie and the boys in white bib and black Dickie. Just keep Winnie away from the red carpet, could be a re-run of the zebra crossing episode and we don't want the cut of your suit spoiling with a pocket full of doggie do-do bags.

  43. I love weddings - congratulations to both of you. John you'll look good whatever you wear. Love the idea of a megga 'scotch eggs and nibbles do' too - sounds good.

  44. What to wear?

    The green "pants" (trousers)?

I love all the wardrobe ideas. The most important thing is that you and Chris are happy, which you will be.

  46. You could wear that superman onesie you have.

  47. The wife and I got married this past April, with not a lot of prep time. Neither of us wanted to wear a dress, but we came up with a pretty good compromise. My Scottish background lent itself to my wearing a kilt, and my sister had one my aunt had given her made out of the family tartan. Not to be outdone, my Texan wife went out and bought herself a lovely red tartan kilt at one of the local Brit stores. Plunk on a white blouse, and we were set!

  48. Anonymous11:06 pm

As I was reading this your Superman onsie also came to mind - but then maybe the white shirt black tie ala Mr Bond might be the way to go. Definitely no coloured lapels tho!
And as an outdoor decoration for your village bash we have just the right item here in Melbourne at the moment. He's here promoting weddings and associated glamour. Highlighted in Andrews blog today - Mr Darcy arising from the lake.

  49. The venue is superb looking!!
Can you doll up as high end as Maggie Smith a la Downton? If that is too crass a suggestion, a suit along the lines of debonair Cary Grant will never fail and will cause Chris to swoon. Go grand darling, love is in the air!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. The venue is perfect! Romantic! Love it.
You'll look fine. Just don't wear anything that's been around the critters.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ah, what we do for love! You can rise to the challenge, John, and be the handsome man we all know you are. Personal dresser or not. The venue looks sublime. Would a tuxedo be too much to ask? Tell us about food and flowers too.

  52. That is a great picture! My other half has taken to wearing two pairs of specs; one on his head and the other on his face. He switches them when needed and sometimes has two pairs on....he so obviously needs bi-focals (did I mention he is Scottish by heritage and nature and hence too cheap to go buy a pair?).

  61. I'm late in commenting on this, which means i had a few chuckles as i read the earlier ones. If you know what Chris is wearing wear something that either matches or complements. I would suggest you accessorise with a boa, but i get the idea Chris would want something a bit more low-key. And, are we ever going to see you sporting the pea-green trousers?

  63. A perfect venue for your wedding feast. It's one of our favourite places since moving here and it being recommended by you. Are you staying there overnight or going home to the menagerie?

I think it's time to get a new suit and really show Chris how well you scrub up :-)

New glasses would be a good idea too ... lol!!
