Favourite Person Thursday

The nominees for Favourite Person Thursday
are
Darling lunatic of the chat show circuit
The delightful Paloma faith

The passionate and cute-as-button tv Zoologist Ben Garrod

Theatrical potty mouth Miriam Margolyes
and

The Queen of Tonga

And the winner is.....
THE QUEEN OF TONGA!
This week's favourite person
Won her place in the hall of fame by virtue of a simple, and wonderfully
human gesture during the Queen's coronation Ceremony of 1953.
Queen Salote of Tonga, gave instructions that her horse carriage was to be kept open
so that the drenched crowds along the procession route could see her.
Smiling broadly, and soaked to the skin,  Salote Tupou III broke with tradition and endeared herself to a whole nation with this spontaneous and warm show of ordinariness

  6. I am so glad the Queen of Tonga won. I remember the day of the Coronation and my mum simply adored that lovely lady.
My first visit here and I love those chooks (hens). Hope you didn't mind me popping in.

What a pleasing piece of history.

  10. I remember the coronation & she was so popular. I came home from boarding school in Somerset & went to the palace with my mother & my hockey stick from the train & of being scared of the rear end of the mounted police horse!
    Funny things you remember!

  12. An interesting selection of favourite persons! I had not heard the story about the Queen of Tonga before. Hopefully, she didn't end up with a bad cold after that ride in the rain.

  13. re Queen of Tonga (in Coronation procession):
I can't resist repeating the old chestnut that a lot of people will know - When Noel Coward was asked "And who is that gentleman seated in the coach beside her?" The acerbic retort came - "Her lunch!"

  15. We had to design a fabric print for Queen Salote of Tonga at art college. I think our ( very camp ) tutor had a bit of a thing for her xx

  16. I remember her at the Coronation. There was a popular ditty at the time that started "The Queen of Tonga, Makes her people stronger"..I will now drive myself nuts trying to remember the rest.
    Miriam I love!

  18. Hmm, if I keep on as I am, I may be eligible to be voted in as the next Queen of Tonga. I wonder how the gardening is in Tonga?

  19. I love Paloma Faith, she also shone on Graham Norton with Hugh Bonneville, Bill Murray and Matt Damon. GN certainly knows how to bring out the best in his guests unless, they are terminally dull Americans, then there is no hope! Are you familiar with Patrick Wolf? Sometime pal of Paloma Faith and has a terrific voice. Love the Queen of Tonga, sheer class glad she won,

  21. Salote was greatly loved here in New Zealand. Her successors and the rest of her family, not so much! I adore Miriam. The other two I don't know.
