Betrothed

There's alot of things that I dont know.
I didn't know until last week that gay marriage was "legal" in the UK from midnight tonight.
I didn't know that the word fiancée only referred to the bride-to-be and not the groom!
(I only learnt this one out at 6.00am this morning after Chris was bellowing
" there's a sloppy turd on the living room carpet!"
and I answered with a rather pathetic
" what a charming thing to shout at your fiancée so early in a morning "

Funny what you find out when you look for it.

For a couple that have been blundering through their second decade together, getting "hitched" was always on the cards at some stage in our lives. .I just had to come to the conclusion that it was up to me to "organise"
Everyone has their own roles in a relationship
and I am the "organiser" at home
I am bred for the role as I love making out lists.

So the date and venue for the ceremony with close friends and family has been booked.
(It will a long awaited delight for both our families to get together at one time) and my sisters and sister in law have been squealing a great deal about hat wearing and will be conscripted to help organise some of a bigger bash in the village on the following day.
A gay civil marriage party in the Memorial Hall eh?
That wil be a first for Trelawnyd!
Anyhow dear readers, you won't hear too much about the nuptuals for a while. All the fine tuning bits need tweaking, overtime shifts need booking and winifred needs a drastic bout at weightwatchers before she can fit into that bridesmaid dress I bought for her last year, Suffice to say, the day has been set!

And do you know what?
Despite the vagaries of living with a man who bellows about stools on the living room carpet at some ungodly hour in the morning.
Getting Married is the perfectly right thing to do!
I would never have contemplated it with anyone else

  2. Is it not the case that fiancee with 2 es is the female form and fiance with 1 is the male form - both being past participles of the original French, possibly afficiancer ( I have no access to accent fonts or indeed, any specialist knowledge of French) meaning promised or betrothed?

    1. Pretty sure you're right on this. Fiance for the male, fiancee for the female.

Looking forward to seeing Winifred in a bridesmaid dress!

I organised our registry office wedding 24 years ago. It was simple but lovely.

  7. Oh and yes....we have a similar call every day..."Willow (one of our cats) has pooed in the conservatory" She is now 11 years old and has never used the litter tray for solids, always choosing to go near to it but not in it. No problem with weeing in there so not sure what that is all about !!!!

  11. Aren't you mixing up 'civil partnership' with 'marriage'? Surely you will simply be getting MARRIED; civil partnerships will now become old hat!

No idea about fiancées; I skipped that bit, and just got married in Gibraltar.

Financee is only for woman? I am not too young to learn. It needs some clarification.

While my sister married her girlfriend in the brief period it was legal in Australia, I have never understood the need for gay marriage, or a commitment ceremony unless you are a star eyed couple of twenty year old bois.

Nevertheless, I won't rain on your parade and I am sure it will be a wonderful day and I wish you both good luck.

PS I feel so old and out of touch after writing the above.

  16. Congratulations on a decision well made .... and about bloody time!!

Isn't it fiancée for the girl and fiancé for the boy, that's what I always thought anyway.

We organised our wedding three weeks before it happened. We booked the registrar, ordered a cake, booked a meal at our local pub with a bottle of champagne, ordered two bunches of flowers for our Mums, got the parents in town on the right day, and then told them 20 minutes before the ceremony that they were going to a wedding ... easy peasy :-)

    I can't wait to see Winifred's dress !!

A turd in the living room? Wait till Chris needs wiping down - not to put too much of a downer on your forthcoming promises. In sickness and in stealth.

The question one may ask and I try and avoid with the freshly engaged: What do you actually do with that piece of paper once the day has worn off? Still, lawyer too need to eat - and they do come in expensively when those stars in your eyes are to be entangled.

Ignore the above. Should you need a veil I recommend Liberty, London. The old woman who fitted mine no doubt dead my now. She was something else. One of the most stirring encounters of my life.

When is the date, John? Do you remember that film (possibly a Bunuel or Truffaut, am not sure): The Bride wore Black. Oh my god. That was something else.

  78. I love weddings, but they are few and far between in my family. Apart from my brother, but we are not going there. My feeling is that families need to celebrate the good times, and, lately, new babies have been the good times - so we hold 'meet the new baby events'

I sincerely hope that scotch eggs will be in the wedding breakfast somewhere. 100. Happy for the happy couple! I definitely recommend marriage, although I have tried it twice and not been very successful in either case: the first ended in a divorce, the second with my husband's death. Not sure yet whether there will be a "Third Time Lucky", but I am not ruling it out.

Until now, I always thought the word fiancée applies to the female part of an engaged couple, and you could say fiancé (with just one e) for the male part, as these are the regular endings for female and male nouns in French.
