The Call

Berry with her Houston wig on
It's a while since I have seen a film which has been so badly let down by its second half  than the Halle Berry thriller The Call.
The first half is a corker. Jordan Turner ( Berry sporting a 1980 Whitney Houston hair do) is a talented 911 operative whose actions inadvertently gets a teenage girl murdered when an intruder breaks into her home. Months later as she is fighting self doubt and anxiety attacks , Jordan receives a similar call from another abducted girl who has been shut into the boot of a car, and the gist of the story centres around just how the Quick thinking operator can locate the girl before the killer strikes.
Through clever crossing cutting, and a series of increasingly tense set pieces director Brad Anderson has produced a wonderfully stressful rollercoaster of a story which is ruined completely when he has Berry hang up her headphones to solve the mystery in the field herself ...
Cue every  " woman in peril with a serial killer" cliche known to Hollywood
6/10

  1. i thought this movie stunk too. i am not a big holly berry fan. she always looks angry. in fact, most of what you read about her is that she is angry about something.

  2. Oh that's too bad. I had hopes for it ... but I do trust your judgement!
I saw Prisoners on the weekend, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gylenhaal - I know, that's not how you spell his name but how can you possibly spell a name like that without googling it? Gah... Anyway, the movie was AWESOME. You'd love it. Edge of your seat stuff.

  3. So. As you know, if our ratings were a bit further apart than I'd have expected (mine 7.5) our opinions were not so distant. But I'm pleased that, like me, you got enough thrills out of the first section of the film to have made the effort worthwhile - at least I hope it had been.
(I won't comment on Cathy's [above] recommendation of 'Prisoners' as I've already put in my ha'porth on that one.)

  4. I suppose it was predictable to get Hally Berry out for some action.

  5. I haven't seen this - or any other - Ms Berry film, but it wouldn't surprise you to learn that I (for one) would give her one.

  7. Yes it was rather cliched but it was good for some mindless entertainment. Have you seen Gravity yet? It's amazing.

  8. I hated this movie.

Gravity, however, is very good and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It will win many awards.

What is concerning is the plot of The Call is more plausible.
