If I Wasn't A Nurse?

......what would I have liked to have been?

Hummm do you know what?
I would have loved to have been a ...........
(wait for it)
......a professional Butler!

Who would have thought it?
What would you lot have been
Given the chance
?
ps
In retrospect I would have liked to be (apart from a butler)
a zoo keeper
a vet
or perhaps even
Russell Crowe's P A

  1. And you would've been on the 'inside' of knowing "What the butler saw!" OooooH!

  2. A vet.I had the chance later in life but I'd have been going into practice in my 40s...late night calls stuffing a goats uterus back in place in the midst snow storm didn't appeal.

  3. No no, John, not a professional butler, you are far too refined for that. You would have been an admirable Gentleman's Gentleman.

  4. I would like to have been a writer, a proper one that could come with rounded characters and believable plots. But I'm not, so I blog instead!

  5. A gardener. But back when I was a gal I was expected to go into a profession - civil service, banking or even insurance ... I opted for banking and discovered that I was expected to get married and leave the bank so no career. I left and joined the army instead - no regrets but, had I known better, I would have been a gardener.

I can so see you as a "Mr. Carter."

I too wanted to be a vet and the Herriot novels were my inspiration. Before that, a cowgirl or a professional rider/trainer.

  7. I came to nursing as a second career.

I've been a library book buyer (loved having boxes of books delivered even if they were on electrical engineering and plumbing). Then I became the ultimate 80s accessory, the suit and heel wearing PA for a group of civil servants. Then came motherhood, then nursing.

I've always wanted to be a kept woman. Lounging around in negligees, fluffy slippers and eating bonbons. Not likely to happen.

Prima Ballerina was a childhood goal but my parents wouldn't let me go to the National School.

History Professor would have been my ideal job.

an archeologist or geologist or maybe a mad scientist.

John, I see you as a gentleman's gentleman too.
    Or a nanny.

John I just turned 65 today and I STILL have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. I guess I'll just settle for what I am. I haven't quite got THAT right yet.

  16. Truth be told, I never really wanted a "career," just a job that wouldn't stress me too much, pays enough to be able to travel a bit, and is granted a modicum of respect. Which I've got.

But, to answer your question in the spirit in which it was intended: either a vet (as above), or a language and culture trainer, prepping executives being sent to live abroad.

  17. I always thought I'd be pretty good at babysitting a celebrity. What do they call them? Personal secretaries? I always know what's best for someone else, and I like to work in the background. Won't tolerate drug addicts or stupid people, though, so I guess that eliminates half of those I might work for.

  18. I'd like to have been the singer for a rock and roll band. I just loved being up there on stage, my voice amplified, lost in the music.

  19. Today, a balloonist - then I could just float away and have a happy landing. You always get a glass of champagne at the end of the ride and that is something most other jobs don't offer.

  20. All Creatures Big and Small was one of our favorite PBS shows for a long time.
Wish I could still see it.
I don't know what I would have been, because then I wouldn't be here to think about it.
    Have a great week, John!

  21. I always wanted to be a vet, never quite made it since marriage and children came first. However, I stayed in the vet field for thirty two years as a technician, which always satisfied my desire to be amongst the animals everyday.
You'd make a wonderful veterinarian, compassionate and a sense of humour :)

We both have become our own kinda of vet in a way.

  24. A Kate Adie style journalist but as I am afraid of everything this really wouldn't have done. Right now I want to be a lady that lunches. I love having an empty head. (of course not all ladies that lunch have empty heads- I just do) John, do you have the discretion to be a butler? I would love all the gossip. I would be such a witch.

  27. Probably a nurse. Despite my family telling me (when the issue was first raised) that I had a heart like butter and wouldn't have lasted five minutes. I don't think a bit of empathy goes astray. And have come across some nurses with as much compassion as a turnip.

  28. What's that? Russell Crowe's P.A.?
Would you be able to preach to him the art of anger management while he blows his top? Oh no - too scary by a mile for me!

  29. You'd make a marvelous butler - what's your last name ? You wouldn't be John. We know a professional butler !

Window dresser for me... and now I get to play dress up at the charity shop.

( I have had my ideal job for twenty years & done a bloody good job too... as a mum ! )

  31. I wished to be a vet but did not get A levels so became a student nurse at Middlesex Hospital. However I missed footing on stairs and fell headlong - very embarrassing being in uniform!!! I really like being in theatre and would have carried on after training as a theatre nurse. My knees failed at that point and I had to give up and become a secretary instead.

  32. I really enjoyed my job and had a great time but, I would have loved to have done prosthetic make-up for films or TV. I went to a Grammar School that wasn't very interested in Art so went a slightly more academic route ( although, I messed about a lot as well !). No regrets though.
More importantly , I wonder who will go on The Great Briish Bake Off tonight ?!!!!
Love Mr. Bates and, I think that any household would have loved you as their Butler ..... they were very well thought of in some households. Have you been watching Servants - The True Story of Life Below Stairs on BBC 2 ?

  36. I think something to do with research in the wilds of the Appalachaians or Rockies or somewhere exotic. The Amazon rainforest, perhaps. No marine biology. I'm not too excited about what's lurking beneath the waves. Sean Connery made a movie, The Medicine Man, that strikes me as an example.

  37. O you've gone and got me thinking again . . . I really don't know. Maybe a shepherdess?
I did post the story though that I remembered when you asked us how we learnt to be inclusive.
All this thinking may well lead me to another story.

I also wanted to work on submarines when i was little, but by the time they allowed women to do so, i was too old to enlist and too fat.

  41. I wanted to be a vet growing up, but ended up as a wildlife ecologist working for the state bureacracy (painful). Now, mid-career, I would like to be a stay at home shepherd and fiber artist!

  42. Being a vet was my dream as a young girl, and to some degree, I guess I've gotten there in my own little way. Seems as if I'm always "doctoring" something at my place. Now my dream is to retire, travel to fiber events and sell my Shetland fiber to other fiber addicts like myself. It would be lovely to do something to earn a living that I feel passionate about.

  43. So many would-be vets!

Had I not let fear stop me, I would have been an architect or an engineer. But, I've had a wide variety of jobs and always been able to pay my bills, so I guess I can't complain.

    Good question, John!
