The Morning After

Sick of seeing me in a collection of waterlogged coats, my sister in law sent me a pair of waterproof trousers and coat through the post, which I must admit was a bloody godsend yesterday.
In the years we have lived in Wales, I don't recall such a rainy day as yesterday. Drains flooded over in the lane, the pond and stream at the back of the field took on the look of a very expensive wave pool, and even the robust but hysterical Indian runners found the whole blustery weather thing a little too much to deal with.
Bad weather saps the mood
It saps the strength
and it upsets the hens.

Today, however, as Scarlet would chirp, IS another day. and as the sun has reduced the field to a steaming soup, I can take stock of yesterday's bad weather.
The Buff and her single white chick had been moved to slightly higher ground yesterday morning and look chipper enough, but Theresa the old turkey with the festering sex injury still looks chilled and slightly bowed. Even with adequate shelter the bad weather has a habit of weeding out the weak. The old, infirm or ill generally disappear in this sort of climate.

I am just about to take the old Berlingo in for her MOT.
I am not hopeful.
The weather, the climate and rough country roads have taken their toll on her too, and she is looking somewhat the worse for wear.so I am expecting the local garage to be offering her the last rites.....she has had to put up with a lot from me...what with pigs in the back, incontinent Bulldogs in the middle and even a fully grown male turkey on the front seat ( and no, before you ask, I didn't put a seat belt on him ).
I'll see what the mechanic says,
But I can almost hear the sucking of teeth from here.

Another worry remains Mabel., Although much improved from her dreadful illness of last week, she remains somewhat lethargic and chesty. Her temperature is down , that much I am happy with ( Chris went into hysterics yesterday, when he caught me gingerly sticking a thermometer up were the sun doesn't shine!) but I have noticed "little things" like a certain weakness in her back leg occassionally, which concerns me.
I will give her a few more days before I take her back to the vets, but I can't help having a nagging suspicion that something else is going on here.
So all in all it's a typical, non event Monday......
Wish the Berlingo luck....we are off to the garage
Enjoy this melancholy little ditty before I go

  1. Good luck with the MOT. Sending good wishes for Mabel still (and could do with just a little of that rain).

  2. The little group of ducks at the village pub can't tell where the stream ends & the road begins - bless em !

  5. Definitely much improved weather here today - only a brief respite, I think. I hope Mabel will be OK.

  6. have to confess I have a set of RED waterproofs in a vain bid to exude cheer, but only ever look like a soggy pillarbox.

Bruce the Horse had colic yesterday which was rain-related so I spent a smelly night wrapped in a horse blanket on watch.
Not just ordinary colic mind you but MAN colic (even the vet expressed surprise that a horse acting so near to his demise had such a normal temperature and heart rate!)

All well this morning, waterproofs dried out ready for next onslaught, me showered and sweeter smelling, Bruce back in his field making up for lost grub.
Today is another day indeed- fiddledeedee!

  7. I thought the rain was never going to stop yesterday, then today the weather is all sweetness and light!

Good luck with the MOT, and wishing Mabel well.

  8. Cool dewy mornings around 3C here with sun appearing mid-morning and then cooling again around mid-afternoon.

    Typical Autumn for this area!

  10. You look like a salty sea dog in that photograph! Tee hee. I hope Mabel feels better soon and that her illness isn't something more serious than it already is. xoxoxo

  11. Bad weather effects all of it it seems, Man or Beast, either with its dreariness or the dampness it brings with it. Poor Mabel I hope it is not to serious :( xxx from the Checkerboard Aussies and myself.

My dear John, you look most fetching in your waterproofs. Better than I did when negotiating the lake district (Cumbria) in my Peter Storm. Oh, the trousers, John, they were so not me; the humiliation of it. Still, Peter Storm went very well with my newly purchased Lillywhites boots (Picadilly Circus, London, ca 1979) and blisters to match.

Mabel doesn't sound so good. In my experience, and it's more limited than yours, when an animal starts dragging its hind legs my alarm bells start ringing. Who knows. I have rescued half dead frogs and butterflies (though never a one day fly - their horizon being rather limited) so there is hope for Mabel yet.

As to your Berlingo: Good luck. It's a wrench when you have to bury what amounts to much more than just a pile of metal carting you from A to B.

  15. Glad it's drying out for you. V. sunny here today and feels like I've been 'waterboarded' for the past fortnight. Maybe we should look into the possibility of growing some rice?

I'm sure you're doing your upmost on Mabel's behalf.

Best of luck with the Berlingo John. I've just circumvented the dreaded MOT by investing in a new van this morning. Maybe you should get one too?

  16. Hope the Berlingo passes, and more importantly, I hope that all will be well with Mabel. Give her a kiss from me.

  17. Into each life, some rain must fall, however it sounds like you are having a monsoon. We had that kind of weather last year and it was bloody awful. Hopefully, it will end soon, and some sun will come back in your life.

  18. Good luck with the MOT and good luck for Mabel too!

  19. John, you have great instincts and I am sure Mabel will benefit from them. As far as the vehicle goes, well that's another story....maybe Chris is correct....time to a new jalopy!

Poor Mabel. If only the sun would come out in force maybe a good soak in the sunshine would do her some good. I'm so glad the rain stopped.

  21. Good sign that Mabel's temp. is down. I have heard pedilyte to restore the electrolytes can be administered but you or the vet would know this I'm guessing.

Hang in there, John. We're rooting for her.

  23. sounds like I'm not the only one ready for the knackers yard then!! This weather's been really difficult for us all..... sunshine today though hurray!!
Let me take a quick minute to extoll the virtues of waterproof overtrouseres - for the uninatiated (and for me originally) who can't see the point... when you've been out in enough rain with your fancy rainproof coats on you'll quickly realise that the water that runs off the coat has to go somewhere and it ends up right at the hemline of the coat on your pants.... I love waterproof pants now they're a godsend..... and if it's not raining but it IS wet try some gaiters!! Bliss!

  24. I hope Mabel gets to rights and nothing else is the matter, it's all so worrying.

Unusual weather we all seem to be having this spring, and lots of it !

Good Luck with the MOT, I'm sure a bit of duct-tape will keep her running another year or two.

  25. I am so sorry that Mabel hasn't rallied by now, I have been hoping that she would.
I wrote you that my Molly was very ill as well and she passed on last Wed. My heart is broken and my house is so empty, it is a terrible loss for me.
I will keep my hopes up that Mabel will be back to normal soon.

  26. I have foul weather gear that i absolutely love. It's a bother when you need to use the loo, but how wonderful to stay dry when there's a deluge!

We are having sun here today, and the warmth has returned! I hope it's here to stay now.

I'm also thinking good thoughts on Mabel's and the Berlingo's behalf.

  27. Hope the old jalopy passes its MOT. If not, hope you can find a replacement that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg.

Mabel does sound a bit iffy....

prayers for Mabel...the car can take care of itself! I hear your little hints of concern for the furry "M" and I know somethings amiss! ahhhhh dear Chris they take human temperatures that way too sometime, hopefully never yours!

  29. My cat had a severe weakness in its hind quarters. I read that flea collars sometimes caused that in cats. I removed it and it wasn't long till she was back to normal. Don't know about that with dogs. I hope Mabel's isn't something serious such as spinal nerve problems or stroke. Oh, how we worry over our four footed babies.

  30. Thinking of Mabel and keeping fingers crossed for the MOT. It's wetter than a squid's address book here too. I made curry, it seems to help somehow.
