The Woman In Black

The Woman In Black as I recall was an atmospheric and rather creepy stage play
The film adaptation staring Daniel Radclife and his rather attractive acting sideburns is a complete pile of mildly scary tosh
My previous blog entry for today was far more interesting
Don't bother your arse with this one

  1. Well that's saved me an eighty kilometre drive the first 60 over African bush roads and the last twenty fighting through traffic to get to a cinema with a no smoking policy and no alcohol licence and then with a gutful of nothing else but dissatisfaction, drive the whole way back again.

Thanks, John, as usual you provide a valuable public service :-)

  2. It's save me a 200 yard walk down the road too, so I am also most grateful. That's my kind of review.

  3. Agreed, what a waste of an hour and a half and £6. Incidentally the 1989 film version is pretty good (I thought), as is the original novel.

  6. Bollocks, too many spelling mistakes. You try typing with a bust hand!

Anyway, what I wanted to say was:

Tom, John is rather good at this reveiwing lark, isn't he? But I have noticed that if the lead is a taught young man in tight jeans he loses the plot somewhat though never as far as the English Tutor who, recognising I was having difficulty with literature, suggested I write an essay based on the first two lines of an allegedly Indian poem which began:

'There is a boy across the river with a bottom like a peach. Alas I cannot swim.'

Had he ever been aware of this, I think my Father would have been pleased with my review of the poem which concerned itself more with the mechanics of building a raft than an implication of frustrated desire.

But given John's honest submission, I think it is me that has lost the plot this time.

  7. No, far from it Hippo. I meant what I said about John'e latest crit - I HATE other people telling me WHY I should like/dislike something, but I am more than happy for them to tell me if they like/dislike something.

    Alas, I cannot swim, either.

  8. A friend of mine lent me her copy of it, you can still get it on ebay for as little as £2.99 although I think they are all region 1. It depends if you like dated old ghost films, I do, but I may be in the minority! its Adrian Rawlins starring (Interestingly he plays Harry's dad in the Harry Potter films.)

  9. I wasn't impressed by the commercials for it and now you have verified that it is not wasting my money on.
    Appreciate that, John!

  11. I thought it was a Chris deBurgh song:-
Woman in black is dancing with me cheek to cheek
There's nobody here, it's just you and me, it's where I wanna be
But I hardly know this beauty by my side
I'll never forget the way you look tonight...

  13. I was disappointed they had to mess around with the story. The book, play and tv film are all very good. The author, Susan Hill doesn't seem to mind they messed with her story, but I guess that's what a big fat royalty cheque will do.

  17. Sorry but my bum has already been sat on a cinema seat for this one and I did enjoy it. In fact it inspired me to pop into see my co-workers at the charity shop, put a black veil over my face and scream ! We do things like that.
I enjoyed it but I do want to see the play. I've had the book for ages & this morning began it so something good came of the film - it got me reading again !

  20. We finally saw the film yesterday. I thought it spooky and creepy enough, but something was missing from the story to tie everything together.
