After bribing him with half a loaf of cheap white bread, he sat in the back of the Berlingo like a seasoned traveller...and within ten minutes he had his first taste of the great outdoors.
Thomas was a kid in some sort of petting zoo, so is well used to poultry of all kinds. He is also very needy (after a couple of minutes it wasn't hard to work that out as he followed me absolutely everywhere!)
Obviously we need to get him a companion......I am only hoping that I have constructed the perimeter fences high enough
Hey Ho
William facing off Thomas soon after the goat's arrival |
Ooh, he's lovely and yes, big.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Constance would be his friend for the time being, since they are both 'needy' types.
I once had to bail my uncle's goat out of jail, he had decided to take a ride to town on a double-decker, and was arrested.
The police at the station fell in love with him.
Thomas is a keeper :)

Thomas is a cutey for sure! How nice he is used to being petted and handled by people! That will surely make him a joy! Yep he needs a friend. :O). I would keep a real close eye on him for a bit till you see if he is a climber or jumper! Some goats are easy to keep up, some not so much :O).
ReplyDeleteIf you have anything near the fence he can climb on, better move that or he will just use it for a launching pad LOL.
He's a handsome fellow!
ReplyDeleteHe's lovely! Best of luck with him.
ReplyDeleteHello John:
ReplyDeleteA petting zoo...now there is an idea for you! We assume that it would be a first for your village and might well prove to be just the attraction that the Welsh Tourist Board might sponsor. Then, the way would be open for you....more goats, chickens, pigs, donkeys, lions, tigers....!!!
I bet he's used to a varied diet after being around children....like crisps, kit kats and sandwich crusts lol. S x
ReplyDeleteHe's got mischief written all over his lovely face. Have you ever thought of adopting a Shire Horse (my favourite creature of all time)? Surely the next project!
ReplyDeleteImagine both of you riding down to the pub in the evening. What an entrance!
Thomas is a fine looking goat, I think he is a nice addition to your place. Good luck on the needy part, he may want to live in the house.
ReplyDeleteThomas is a very suitable new member of your menagerie. Yes, one of his own is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteLet the 'games' begin.....
Ha ha! Stage one of my wicked plan to infiltrate the animal-hoarder's house in disguise has succeeded (good job I was brought up as a kid in a petting zoo). Next, I am going to dance on his car and shag all the chickens!
ReplyDeleteYou may joke Cro, but a Ient the money to a friend of mine to buy a Shire Horse from a gypsy fair in Priddy a few years ago. She now has 28.....
"I", not "a" of course.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Thomas and now another whole new chapter in goat antics!! You will be amazed at the smarts those critters have and will no doubt definitely need a companion..goats are very needy that way. OR...you will find him hollering for you at ALL times! Speaking from experience. And I now have 30 odd individuals that all have amazing character and LOVE LOVE LOVE people. You need a nice nanny with wonderful sugar milk though. I suspect if you had a large amount of property you would have many. Now if only you lived down the road from me? I would set you up with a very nice Nanny indeed!
ReplyDeleteHI THOMAS!!!!!! He's not a Boer but he does have very nice wattles! I hope you have performed the goat introduction "hongi" with Thomas. You know how? Touch noses and breath out gently. xoxoxoxoxo
ReplyDeleteA goat!!! I love goats - so glad you added him cause I've always wanted one. Maybe you should sell shares in the various animals. We could pay a small monthly fee and you could send us goat hair clippings and goose feathers.
ReplyDelete7.30 pm update
ReplyDeleteso far he has escaped from his pen twice (i can see where he got through)
he has tangled himself up in the poultry netting and has
stolen my gardening gloves ( which have been partly eaten)
hey ho
Congrats! Jane made a great point about the petting zoo!
ReplyDeleteI thought you were going to say that he behaved like a seasoned traveller and within ten minutes had his first taste of...car seat stuffing. Enjoy!
For years I have wanted pygmy goats. I have so many nettles, ivies, brambles, docks and bind weed, now seems like a good time to fulfill my dream.
ReplyDeleteThomas certainly looks like a character, I think he is going to give you all some adventures :-D
Oh John, I hope your fencing is goat proof!
ReplyDeleteCro is right, you'll be getting horses next. Then how about a few sheep ...
Thomas is beautiful! I'm glad to know he isn't shy about investigating his new home, although I can understand it if you would prefer he didn't investigate quite so thoroughly.
ReplyDeleteNancy in Iowa
I hear goats eat everything so don't hang your clothes outside.
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing Thomas, I want one.
He is v. handsome but yes he will need a companion though of course it doesn't have to be a goat...
ReplyDeleteHandsome chap. We had goats as children and used to drink their milk which I never much liked, but they were great pets
ReplyDeletecarol
ReplyDeletewhat would you suggest?
and to all you that know goats
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO GIVE ME ADVICE
X
He's very handsome!
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about goats as i've never had any. A nearby farm did, on the other end of my road the last place i lived. On my way to work one morning, two of them stood stock still in the middle of the road and wouldn't give way. I wore suits in those days, and didn't want to chance having them jumping on me, so after a few honks of the horn, they finally yielded.

John,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Thomas is gor-ge-ous!
We loved (LOVED!) having our goats (pygmy). We loaned them out to a petting zoo (raising funds for abused animals) and I've sorely missed them.
John...I'm being sincere when I say this... take Thomas w/you on your morning walks w/the dogs. Goats are leash trainable and believe it or not - they love going on walks!
Also, they are house trainable, but I have a feeling Chris will draw the line there.
A huge welcome to Thomas!
Farmer
oh God ! goodluck x
ReplyDeleteLovin' Thomas...yes another one for sure!
ReplyDeleteLet the goatie adventures begin!
ReplyDeleteThomas is absolutely lovely. But oh dear...I predict a total loss of your garden if he's not properly restricted and fenced away from it. Looking forward to "Thomas" stories...I suspect they'll be more than a few!
ReplyDeleteWell...our Tom is a fine lad indeed! Welcome!
ReplyDeleteThomas is a smug looking fellow. Like he knows something I don't know. O_O
ReplyDeleteOh my, you've entered the Twilight Zone my friend. Goats are totally loveable and despicable at the same time. When the last one I have passes on (he is quite elderly), I will never have another. Best of luck.
ReplyDeleteJohn, just bring Thomas into your house to keep him from escaping -- It would only be for one night...
ReplyDeleteOh my,he's cute, but there's a mischievous gleam in those eyes. I have a feeling you are never going to run out of blog ideas...
ReplyDeleteWell, I thought your hands were full before John.....
ReplyDeleteGoats. Are. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteAh, yes. The publicist will not share how much we goats have cost in fencing and the like.
ReplyDeleteNor the cost of the 100 yards of new fencing the male person just bought due to Luke and Brewster breaking down their pen wall.
oh no.
We goats love to escape!
The grass is greener you know.
What a pretty fellow! Now you have a big white "dog." Goats love to climb, so all should be well if the fence can take being stood on as he tries to climb out to get to you. I think you are his buddy. Hopefully, he won't be so lonesome he spends all night yelling for you. We had one of those for a short time.
ReplyDelete37 comments before mine, really why do I bother. Its obvious you do not need my comment. I'm going over to visit Tom now
ReplyDeleteWelcome Thomas! Your goatee beard matches your owner's! NO MUNCHING NEIGHBOURS' FLOWERS OR VEGETABLES or you will be goat curry my lad!
ReplyDeleteI have many goat tales and can't wait to see how this develops. Love that last picture!
ReplyDeleteTee hee. Thomas may stay more content in a fence if he has a goatie friend (or they both my decide to go on adventures together). Right now he may just be looking for companionship. Depending on the delightful personality of the goatie at hand we goats will try to 1) push our way through an obstacle; 2) climb it; 3) jump it; 4) go under it; or 5) butt it or hook our lovely horns in it until it breaks!
ReplyDeleteHave you looked at the type of fence we have here? Tall and SOLID. heh heh.
What a good looking animal! He looks, though, as if he likes getting his way. Maybe, soon enough, he will have his place in the kitchen. Then he and Constance will stare each other down over who gets to sit next to you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a handsome chap he is.
ReplyDeleteJust read ALL the comments. If you do as Farmer says, and take Tom on your morning walk with the dogs, just make sure you have your camera...that would be quite the sight.
ReplyDeleteWill you then be John the Goat? John the Dogs and Goat?
I can picture you going for a walk, you, your partner, your dogs, the goat, a picnic basket.....do you have any bidable chickens as well? Where oh where is my camera?
ReplyDeleteA leash trained goat. Best train him not to eat the leash as well.
Welcome, Thomas!
ReplyDeleteThomas is very cute! Love the last photo.
ReplyDeleteA second goat and you can be John O Goats.
