Sense & Sensibility
Now I have not seen this since 1995 ( Nuala and I blubbed through it in a Notting Hill picture house)
But tonight I caught it on tv and loved it all over again!
It is a clever film which shows the constraints and manipulations of an affluent female Georgian population .
The film really made Kate Winslett a star, but I much prefer Emma Thompson's beautifully subtle performance of the careful Elinor Dashwood...she breaks your heart!
A lovely Movie

Effing bloody Jane, effing Austen.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with you animal hoarders and Jane effing Austen?
calm down dear...I thought you would have loved it after all there was always a beautiful set of candlesticks on their fireplaces!
ReplyDeleteWell I happen to like Jane Austen, loved sense and sensibility as well. Perhaps you have to have some sensitivity to enoy it.

One of my absolute favourite movies of all time, John! Emma Thompson was wonderful. And what a cast, even in minor roles: Hugh Laurie, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Elizabeth Spriggs, rave rave. Glad you love it too.

ReplyDeleteElizabeth spriggsis another favourite of mine!
I loved her in PARADISE ROAD!
If you lived in Bath, Somerset, as I do, you would not be welcoming yet another Jane effing Austen fillum, nomatter how effing senible you are, believe me, dear.
ReplyDeleteSenible? Senile? - Sensible is wot I meant.
ReplyDeleteThe scene where Elinor beats her chest while choking back tears absolutely slays me.
ReplyDeleteSenible? Senile? I feel I am rapidly becoming both. Sensible, well I never had pretensions of sensibility. If senible isn't a word, it should be.
ReplyDeleteHugh Grant. What a wuss. But the Captain ? Now he was hot ! But what did he see in that little whiney sister. Really who gets sick walking in the rain ?!
ReplyDeleteJane Austen? I wonder what the story line was!
ReplyDeleteI can't stand Emma Thompson (ET).
We love that film. My lady's most favorite though is Amanda Root in Persuasion.
ReplyDeleteHello John:
ReplyDeleteAlas, we find the adaptations for film or television of Miss Austen's novels the teeniest bit tedious. But, each to his own!
It would appear that our comment on your post on the Village Show, where we had planned to enter all manner of goodies, was lost in the recent Blogger fiasco. As possibly was yours on our latest post where we lost eighteen comments. But many thanks, anyway.
I` ve never seen it. Another to add to my list of Gotta-See`s.
ReplyDeleteI cried too! And Emma takes the cake from Kate.
ReplyDeleteI reread the book this winter and decided i'd take another look at this film version, too.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed both very much.

I love Kate singing "A Lark in the Clear Air" in the movie "Iris".
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite movies of all time!
ReplyDeleteIf you can forget that Emma was too old to play her part, it was a great film. I love Kate in it.
