Middle age Naps

Weeding the back garden or napping?
I am getting to an age when an occasional afternoon nap is a rather essential part of life rather than a just a holiday indulgence. Yesterday was a remarkably busy shift where I had a patient to get ready for discharge to a medical ward in addition to an emergency  ventilated admission through A& E. For  12 hours I was on my feet and whereas those ever cheerful 25 year old staff nurses seem to cope with the physical slog day in day out....my aging old bones feel as though I have been gang banged by a troupe of the Dagenham Girl Pipers!

So after walking the dogs, planting out cabbage and leeks ,and lashing down the wind battered polytunnell yet again, I sneaked upstairs to the bedroom and had a blissful 40 winks under the eiderdown.

So why feel guilty? the Greeks and Spaniards have a snooze most afternoons whether they are old farts like me or not..so why on earth should I worry......in the end I didn't worry...I crawled onto the bed and within seconds was dribbling away in wonderful middle aged slumber.......

Its a wonderful indulgence.......AND in this time of recession..........it's free!!!

  4. I love naps, even more the older I become.
Your not alone when it comes to aching bones, I work alongside an eighteen year old, try keeping up with that !
    Happy snoozing, weeding later ;)

  5. It's the deliberate naps that are delicious, the involuntary ones - not so much.

    What did the doctor say?

  6. I'm grogily reading this post having just crawled off the bed after my necessary daily hours nap - I invented the bed-head hairstyle!

  7. I have always fought taking a nap. However, lately I find myself as well taking a nap once in a while. Some days I just need it. Someone recently told me naps were good for us and we should take them LOL. So there you have it!

  8. LOL John, I saw your reply to comment--If you could see MY face you'd know I haven't either, but then I have poison ivy again!

    Enjoy your day John!!!

  9. I'd love to be able to nap like that. if I sleep during the day, I always wake up all groggy and it takes me the rest of the afternoon to "wake up".
Just lying down on the carpet is a treat, hearing everything go click and creak....LOL

  11. My husband takes a nap every day as our cats get him up fairly early to be fed.

  12. I need to learn how to nap the right way. Once asleep, I can't get up for hours. 40 minutes and up is the right way to do it and get refreshed. Nice!

  13. It's supposed to be very good for you health-wise to nap during the day, so you are only looking after yourself, John. (I've been doing it for years!)

  14. Love my afternoon snooze - just 40 minutes - so re-invigorating! And I agree with Sharon, it's the 'deliberateness' of the nap that makes it special.

  15. It's not free, John. They just let you believe it is.

  16. I remember when I used to be able to stay awake for a couple days at a time.

By the same token, I remember my Granny always took an afternoon nap.

I probably should take naps, too. If it was good enough for her, it should be good enough for me. :)

Happy Monday to you all! :)

  17. I love taking an occassional quick nap in the afternoons! If I shut my eyes for about 20 minutes I feel very refreshed for the afternoon chores. I hear it is healthy and for me a must on some days! Glad you got to get some rest.

  18. Amazing how that old 'work ethic' given us by our WASP ancestors can make us feel guilty! The Greeks and Spaniards have it so right!

  19. Oh I learned the pleasure of taking intentional naps years ago. Especially if a day is not going well, I consider taking a nap and then getting up a "do over."
Also, I've found one may sleep better during a nap than at bedtime as the "intent" to take a nap shuts the mind off, whereas bedtime is a routine and the mind might not "shut up."
I am laughing though as a few weeks ago I commented aloud to myself "OMG I've turned into my grandpa!" I found myself laying down after dinner, yet before official bed time.
    Yikes!
    LOL! Enjoy!

Nothing is better than a good nap, no matter the age.

  24. One of those rare moments of real freedom is when we can turn our back on the world and sink into gentle oblivion...when I'm at home, a nap is almost mandatory, between the hours of 1 and 3, when my tide is low...

  25. After lunch (no wine) I always find something soporific on TV (Judge Judy works wonders), and have about 10 mins power-nap. Heaven.

I've taken to cat-napping. Thirty minutes and I'm a new person (which the hubster is always profoundly grateful for...)
