The Cottage this morning |
Understandably the village was deserted when I took the dogs out for their walk. Curtains and blinds have been drawn so that people can get a good view of today's event on their flat screens but I did smile when I saw Peter at Anchor house saluting me merrily in his garden under his newly planted Union Jacks!
Someone had put red, white and blue bunting around the the Memorial Hall and the Crown pub is decked out with flags, so the village has a small "touch" of festival about it
Last night I found a long homemade thumbstick stuck untidily in the hedge by the lane. It was a beautiful and old piece of wood, which had been well loved and well made and was completed with an ancient metal base and layer after layer of simple clear varnish.
I fell in love with it the moment I saw it, and took the staff carefully back to the cottage in the hope that no one would claim it .
But alas, this morning I noticed the red faced Welsh farmer scouting around the lane in his red landrover and I knew he must have lost this stick when he helped me set up my new fencing earlier in the week.
A little reluctantly I showed him the lost stick and the farmer beamed a big red face beam at its return.
"I've had this stick a long long time" he explained hooking his thumb comfortably into the "v" at the top of it
Then he reached into the back of his landrover and pulled out another similar home made staff
My thumbstick |
I am so made up with his kind gift.....
Anyhow the wedding is about to start.....so I will get off and watch it.....
I am not a style guru as you all well know but Kate looked fab! |
I know I am in risk of sounding like a sycophant but she did look rather classy! |
mind you Beatrice (right) did look a real twat in her "antler" hat |
What a great gift to get. I'm sure the farmer was glad to get his walking stick back.
ReplyDeleteKate does look nice. I'm so glad she didn't go for the pouffy look that nearly swallowed poor Dianna.
Just goes to show honesty is the best policy, John. ;)
ReplyDeleteKate looks stunning! And they look so obviously in love with each other x
ReplyDeleteJane
Those are the best kinds of gifts!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think Kate is going to make an awesome princess. Plus she's gorgeous.
Very nice walking stick - must photograph my 100 year old rosewood one and post it on my blog. I treasure it - my grandfather used it, whether he needed it or not and it was the only thing from his estate that i wanted!
ReplyDeleteThat is a fine walking stick. I bet he was glad to have it returned.
ReplyDeleteNice thumbstick; in about 50 years time it'll start feeling right!
ReplyDeleteWhat a thoughtful gift for the return of the walking stick--Now you have one that you can make your own 'print' on!
ReplyDeleteThe wedding is of course on all the networks here--They are all comparing Catherine's dress to Grace Kelly's.
A nice gesture and a great gift to have.
ReplyDeleteWills and Kate look very happy and what a ceremony......Brits truly can 'throw' a party!
cro
ReplyDeletethanks for that..I didntknow it was called a thumbstick!!!!
Bloody hell sir! You are quick off the mark with your Royal Wedding post! I noticed the antlers too. Perhaps that hat reflects the young princess's preferred mating position. Come here my dear!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed every minute of it John - I do agree though about Beatrice and Eugenie - not sure who gives them their fashion advice (can I hazard a guess) but they looked awful. Wonderful to see all the organisation too.
ReplyDeleteGlad about the stick - one good turn deserves another.
Just finished watching it here too John. I've been up since 4.30...wouldn't have missed it for the world.
ReplyDeleteShe looked stunning and yes...what the heck was on Beatrice's head? She looked like something from the Disney Electric light parade!
Highlight for me...Jerusalem...simply cannot hear that hymn without crying!
Nice stick BTW!
Bloody hell - now I know what Sue meant by 'antler hat'! I only heard it on the radio (I have to admit...)
ReplyDeleteP.S. Correct me (someone) if I'm wrong, but I think that 'thumbsticks' are not (as I was told when a kid) for pinning snakes down prior to capture, or putting your thumb in either. I believe they are relatively modern (about 250 years) and are for resting the barrel of a rifle when stalking deer.
ReplyDeleteVery honest to return the walking stick and I am sure you felt good when you saw how happy it made him to find his treasure. Nice of him to give you one of your own.
ReplyDeletei must say i'm more interested in the stick than the wedding, but glad you had pleasure from both! yeah, what's up with the contraption on that woman's head? as you said, antlerish - she might get mistaken for something during the hunt. love your newly acquired staff. i'm a firm believer that good deeds at some point always get repaid and glad you got yours immediately!
ReplyDeleteYou can't blame Beatrice when she has been raised by the disgrace that is Sarah Ferguson. xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you did the right thing and were wonderfully rewarded! No doubt, you made that red-faced Welshman most happy.
ReplyDeleteI, too, thought Kate looked resplendent. I hope she and her prince have a long and happy union.

Wouldn't you know it, I slept through the whole thing! What is the deal with those awful things on their heads? Yuk! Kate did make an exceptionally beautiful bride!
ReplyDeleteWalking stick - been thinking of getting one of those myself, but my taste runs to one with a silver top. :-)
I'm still scratching my head about the U.S media obsession with the wedding. I watched parts and it was incredible, but for weeks and weeks it was storied to death. I'm kind of sorry I missed the antler hat.
ReplyDeleteThat's a hat? (0.o)
ReplyDeleteI have not watched any of it. I do wish them a long, wonderful life together (how could it not be?).
Thank you for sharing the pictures and I am so glad the farmer gave you such a splendid reward! :)
What a lovely stick, you'll get lots of use with it in the field and country lanes.
ReplyDeleteLoved Kate's dress, she looked stunningly beautiful, they both looked so in love.
I cried throughout the whole service, happy tears.
Enjoy this special day !

Wow! That antler hat is ....well...different. Love that walking stick!
ReplyDeletethumbstick? So glad you included a photo as I had all sorts of odd visions dancing in my head!
ReplyDeleteAnd congrats to Kate and William. Here's hoping they can continue to change how we view royalty and somehow continue to be the picture of charm and grace. They really seem to be a special couple.
Love your thumbstick (and why you received it)! Kate's dress was stunning in it's simplicity and she and William appear very happy and compatible!
ReplyDeleteThere is a saying, Kindness, like a boomerang, always returns.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least Beatrice got noticed and that may have been the point.
The whole event was so beautiful and romantic. You Brits do it well!
That "thumbstick" is a lovely gift -
ReplyDeleteI am envious!
That was awfully nice of the farmer so now you have your very own thumbstick, I'm sure it will get lots of use on those early mornig walks with the dogs.
ReplyDeleteThumbstick...I like that. Daddy called his crudgels, you could use them for defense or walking. Beautiful natural sticks formed by nature, collected by Dad, we have kept them all.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful story...gifts from the heart are always more wonderful
I have a walking stick and I would be lost without it.. How wonderful he left you with one that he had made.. That stick will be a treasure.
ReplyDeleteHubby and I got up at 3 in the morning here in the U.S.A. to watch the Royal Wedding. IT was so beautiful. Kate is such a beautiful girl and is going to make us proud. I loved seeing all the hats.. How do they get those hats to stick on their heads. I thought of you this morning while I watched from across the pond..
Have a Tiggeriffic Day...ta ta for now from Iowa:)
The wedding was fabulous and Princess Kate could not have looked more beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThumbstick? That's a new one for me! I no longer hike, but I still keep a favorite hiking staff in the trunk (boot) of my car. An elder cousin made it for himself, and later shortened it, varnished it, cut a hole in the top and threaded a rawhide strip through it and gave it to me. It went on many a hike in the North Georgia (US) mountains with me!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm one of the few Americans who did not get up at 3am to watch the wedding! I couldn't sleep 2 nights ago and was up early Thursday morning, but then crashed and slept really late today.

Twm, if you were to attend a Welsh cattle market, you'd know exactly what a 'thumstick' was for.
ReplyDeleteWomen's love of hats is a mystery. But Beatrice takes it to another level. What a prat!
I'm tired. For 'thumstick' please read 'Thumbstick'.
