Ok we have gone from the
ridiculous ( my previous "Nipple" blog) to the sublime (Iris
Dement's True grit version of
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms)
I am not a country music fan but this song is rather wonderful
I took Chris to see True Grit tonight and he loved it!
A bit Kate and Anna McGarrigal - how I loved them.
ReplyDeleteOh, how melancholy that makes me, John. A beautiful classic.
ReplyDeleteReally looking forward to seeing this movie myself - can't wait. I'm a real 'Bridges' fan and the bits I watched during the Oscars really piqued my interest!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful version of that song.
ReplyDeleteGreat 'country' song. Like you John, I took my son to see this a few weeks ago, as did my Father a few decades ago. I loved and laughed at the original, as my son did with me at the current version.
ReplyDeleteJeff Bridges was the only choice for the revised role of 'Rooster Cogburn' and he did 'JW's original portrayal proud.
Stand out performance for me though was fourteen year old 'Hailee Steinfeld' as Mattie Ross.
In my humble opinion, she was the 'true' True Grit of the whole show.
That is a beautiful rendition. I have yet to see the new True Grit, but caught the original on TV again the other night.
ReplyDeleteNancy in Iowa
Weaving this old hymn through the movie was brilliant.
ReplyDeleteOne of my all-time favourite singers. I like this quote that a journo came up with to describe her singing:
ReplyDelete"Her voice cuts like a knife, takes you apart ... and then kisses it better."
We have tickets to see her again this spring...our third time. Like you, not a rabid country fan but she's so very different and wonderful. Her shows are kept small so it's rather like having her in your livingroom. Alex has desribed her best.
ReplyDeleteShe's new to me and I rather liked the song and her voice. Thanks for introducing her to me.
ReplyDeleteGreat song John! You may also like a few cuts from 'Trio' an album put out a few years back by Linda Ronstadt, Emmy Lou Harris and Dolly Parton. It is fabulous. We'll make you a 'country' fan in no time flat!

Now I have to see this movie John. I heard it was good but now I know it is for sure since Chris liked it! Maura :)
