The Difference between Need and want

I had a conversation the other day with my friend Nige.
He asked me if I had a hobby?....( I think he thought I had got bogged down just a little with normal ebb and flow of home life)
I was not sure what he was getting at, and sited my animals as my reply.
"No, you misunderstand me" he said
"are there things you just want to do rather than Need to do?"
I then got his drift........ most of us feel that we have to do things....It's the way our lives work. We have to go to work,we have to prepare food, he have to eat it......so many Have tos ....and so many need tos in our lives.......I need to walk the dogs several times a day, I need to feed and care for the stock appropriately.....but Also I know I want to do these things too..........but I understood Nigel's point....sometimes it's just nice  to do something because we would like to......simple as......

Tonight is a work night....so today is a bit of a nothing day....you know the sort day that you are just waiting to "get over" so to speak....Its a bit like waiting for the flight home after a rather nice holiday......
My "have to" jobs were all done.....so while Chris drove down to Prestatyn to get his hair cut....I indulged myself (lol when don't I?) in a brief moment of "would like" time.

I took myself into the Church Yard and with no dogs to watch, no birds to feed and no jobs to do....it was nice to soak up the warm day and read the headstones

  1. My granny used to tend the churchyard in Braceby where she lived. I used to go along and read the stones when I was quite little. I still enjoy doing that. I can see why you would enjoy that on a sunny day, epcecially with the daffodils peeking through.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend John.

  2. I don't go without the dog but I do enjoy our local grave-yard and I do read the head-stones. Sometimes when we arrive there we will spot a deer or two grazing. Have a nice day, Hugs, Deb=^..^=x5

  3. Oh, hats off to Nige! I get so tied up with the 'have-to's I lose touch with just how rejuvenating the 'want-to's are.
    I like your choice.

  4. Nothing like a bit of headstone browsing to put life into perspective.............

I remember those those night duty days bit like having a dentist appointment at the end of the day and suddenly remembering :(

  5. Every one needs some me time. We all become so entrenched in the dailies, that sometimes, we forget to take a breath of air, just for us.

  6. Beautiful place ... And sometimes you just need a little "down" time. Have a great weekend!

  8. What a lovely old country church and yard. It may be a good idea to go there every now and then, just because you want to.--Inger

  9. My "have to" is more like "should do", I often let it go and do more of the "want to". If this is confusing, my messy house is a good visual. :-)

  10. There is certainly a difference between what you need to do and what you want to do. So well put! We get in such a groove, don't we?

  11. John - there is a great difference between need and want, I agree. And I also agree that reading headstones in a village church yard is a lovely occupation - particularly with daffodils.
I shall have to go away and think what I do because I want to do it, rather than need to do it - at present I can't think of a thing!

  12. I like your idea of "me time" because a lot of time our "hobbies" have a way of turning into "have tos" and "need tos." Keep your "me time" and turn it to lovely times like you spent today.

  14. I tend to always keep the 'have to's" at the top of my list, only because it's the way I was raised.
I think it was the whole midset of Northern working-class people, get your hands dirty, no time for doing for yourselves, that was the lazy way.
Of course, times have changed, I try to fit it all in now :)
Hope your evening on the ward goes well !
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

Glad to hear you had some quiet time to yourself. :)

  16. Ahh - 'needs and wants' - takes me back to university and my philosophy degree.

Most people confuse the two, claiming they 'need' what actually they 'want'.

Most of the debate about public service cuts illustrates this point perfectly.

  18. Well said, Nige. A timely reminder. I hope your shift was quiet - but ICUs are very rarely quiet, so I hope at least it wasn't too stressful.

  19. JohnG - 'Need' is a basic living essential ie. if you don't have it, you could die. 'Want' is something that you feel you need, or you really desire, but not having it doesn't mean you die.

A thing can be a want for one person whereas a need for the other.

And I love old graveyards - there's a famous one in Sydney, Australia at Waverly, the Old Waverly Cemetery on a dramatic coastal cliff site, retaining much of its original Victorian character. Elements surviving from the Victorian period include the general layout of graves and access roads, the imposing carved sandstone gateposts, the cast iron gates and fencing (dated 1877), the finely detailed stone gateway building, the many Victorian monuments and headstones, stone gutters to some access roads and timber picket boundary fencing (possibly from c.1880).

  20. What a pleasant blog. I know all about the wasted day, prior to a night shift - experienced them for many years.

Graveyard rambling - love it. I blogged a week or so about the same pastime.

I'm a bit envious of the daffodils in full bloom. We had snow here in eastern Ontario this morning. A few daffs poking their leaves through though - no bloom for another six weeks though.

  22. 'Me time' is always good--But you should do what you love, love what you do--I think that's what you're doing and your life is about John.

Hope you've had an enjoyable day!

"I indulged myself (lol when don't I?) in a brief moment of "would like" time." ?!??!!

Well, after reading your previous post (a day in the life of) I would have thought you never indulge yourself! At least I wouldn't call applying antibiotic ointment to a chicken's butt "indulging". But somehow you usually sound like you love everything you're doing anyway...even when you don't. Which is why I LOVE to come here and peruse all your posts... :-)

ps I love that you do that for the ghost hens (cream their bums.) Out of all your flock I admit, those girls are closest to my heart.
