Pitching it right

We used to loved British Airways, but have been disappointed over the last few years with the standard of service we received on several long haul flights we took to New York and San Fransisco.
The best trip we ever took was a Virgin Atlantic flight to JFK, and whilst BA now are still banging on about "FLYING THE FLAG" Virgin very cleverly is pitching its advertising with this sort of camp chutzpah!
This latest advert is bold, brassy and crackingly attractive. It is also terribly British.......a lesson BA could learn from!

This amused me today.....I dont know about anyone else, but I am absolutely sick of dealing with bad news. The recession, the phone hacking crisis, a gay activist battered to death in Uganda, day after day we are burdened with the dire, the depressing and the futile........and I am bloody sick of it, I have found myself not reading or listening to the news anymore It is dragging me down!
Today I have celebrated the positive and the happy! like Virgin Airways have done! Good news too:-My friend Nigel has all but finished his PhD! My sister in law is coping ( with a little help) with my brothers' discharge from hospital and Constance has had an incontinent free day!

Dont bother me again with the soddin' recession! Lets have a little more froth, camp and positive news in the media eh?

  2. Why do you think we don't have a television/
we watch all our programmes on the laptop and avoid news of any kind.
    This means no newspapers.
Unfortunately we do often catch the news on the radio and what do you know, its all doom and gloom.
Just call us Mr. and Mrs Ostrich, but we are happy this way.lol

  4. Amen, John. I don't watch or listen to the news at all except when my hubby insists on doing so (I'm in the same room).
I read 99% positive stuff off the internet (blogs I like).
Or watch a few shows I like (Season 3 of Merlin, haha).

    Congratulations to Nigel!

And so glad to hear your brother is being discharged. Bless you all. ♥

  5. I'm happy to find a few others who don't do 'the news'. As you say, it's all murder and mayhem that you can't do a damn thing about.
The ad vid is great. Creative advertising is a rare and wonderful thing.
Love the blog header pic of the chicken.

  7. Fantastic ad. I have always loved Virgin Airlines.

I'm with you on the depressing info overload. It is getting to be too much.

  8. OMG! Love the Ad. For an industry that has been anything but fun for the last decade, that is fabulous! I totally understand the news thing.... I haven't had TV service in 4 years, and haven't missed it a bit. I am (reluctantly) getting service again tomorrow, mainly so that I can have reliable internet again. I will be glad to have some of the cooking and decorating and crafting channels back, but I can assure you I shan't be watching the news. Far too depressing!

  10. BBC NEWS 1. Beer drinkers are demanding more FROTH on their pints of Tetleys Yorkshire Bitter.
    2. An international boy scout CAMP is be held near the North Wales village of Trelawnyd this summer. Locals are already rehearsing the Ging Gang Goolie song.
    3. David Cameron and George Osborne have both revealed they are HIV POSITIVE and will be quitting front line politics forever to open a B&B in Rhyl - probably named "The Eton Mess" in memory of their political achievements.

  12. I'm another one who doesn't watch the news and I try not to associate with gloomy people either.
When I visit your blog I know the header is going to make me smile every time.

  14. I don't think Yorkshire Pudding's comment is amusing. It insinuates HIV is a "Gay Disease".

Maybe she (or it) should delete their comment as it is totally without taste and low to no class!

  17. John, thanks for stopping by my blog (MIdlife farmwife) ! Which of course caused me to snoop on you. So glad I did. LOVE the up close and personal pic of the chicken. I must try to replicate as soon as this ridiculous cold snap leave Illinois. AND we gave up the tele two months ago. I har enough crap on the radio but I least I.m not bombbarded with all the visuals.

Wow! What a great commercial! I LOVE the crew member who starts dancing in the scanner. (Hey, would they be able to tell if you actually stripped in one of those things? That could be fun...)
    Congrats to Nigel...brilliant coup!
Best of the best wishes to your brother and his wife.
And a big ole' nuzzle to Constance for such a dry feat.

  20. Well said! I find the news programmes get overly excited by EVERY new cut that the government brings in and whip folk up into a frenzy!!!
Its a date the next time you are "UP North" See you then.x

  21. It is a great Ad John. Classy and glamorous. It does exactly what it's supposed to do in that it makes you want to be a, um I mean, fly with Virgin.

  22. I'm with you buddy. The news throws me in such a funk sometimes that Patrick occasionally bans me from watching or reading it. I swiped a few pics (3)of Meg from your blog and just did a posst of her and Hootie. I hope you don't mind. If it's not okay, let me know and I'll pull the post. xx-c

  24. Oh I'm so with you on this. I rarely read newspapers anymore, even the local one seems full of doom and gloom *sigh* I don't watch the news on TV either ~ the only news headlines I catch a glimpse of are when I fire up the 'ole internet and it goes into the Virgin homepage!

I know that I'm knocking on the door of 50, which isn't exactly ancient (is it???), but I can remember when there always used to be at least one 'feel good' report on the news. No wonder there's so many folk suffering from depression!

  25. Couldn't agree more John! I have said for a while now that there IS a market for a news channel for just GOOD NEWS! There are plenty of people out there who would turn their dial in a jiffy! We are two of them here!

  26. I am so with you on the media thing. It's a doom, doom, doom! I watched Charlie Brooker's 'How TV ruined my life' and laughed at the clips of Alistair Stewart staring into the camera saying 'Could Britain be sliding towards chaos?'. Of course not, only in the media. The rest of us just get on with it. Someone should start a good new channel!
