Christmas Cards....a necessary evil? All written listening to old episodes of the ARCHERS |
But, I must say, I have always enjoyed writing Christmas Cards!
It a ritual that takes time, discipline and effort.
True..it can get just a little boring when you have to pen a little "original"ditty to great Auntie Betty, but for the most part I quite treasure is the whole experience of putting pen to cardboard! In this day and age when no bugger I know can actually write a proper letter, a brief sentence on a Christmas card is perhaps the nearest we all now get to actual hand written correspondence!
A Hand written card, to me, means effort and thought.( which I guess panders to my ego)......that's why I like receiving cards.....they make me feel.....well. liked and remembered! and more importantly...worth more than a just a quick typed email or God Forbid a bleeding text!!!!!!
ps Nige...your pressie is in the big brown envelope
A. It is not often that I have ever been able to think of a simple line, then I write, as I tend to, smaller and smaller to make every thought and wish fit on the space provided.
ReplyDeleteB.I have do not have the neatest handwriting and it gets worse as I age, they may not be able to read my message.
C. People are used to text and it may wig some people out, trying to remember just how to read cursive handwriting.
D. I am terribly, damned cheap to spend my money on something that most people do not read and just throw away after I have labored so long and hard.
There are probably more - take your pick... :-)
My lady was just starting her cards today! She also likes the traditional hand-written card. I had a package sent to me once - right to ME! The mail man thought it was really funny to have a package addressed to a goat. He drove in the driveway and delivered it to me PERSONALLY. As it should be! xxxx oooo
ReplyDeleteI don't know John...it takes me just as much time to THINK what I am going to say in an e-mail or text-message as it does a hand-written card, just not as long to execute and certainly nowhere near as expensive.
ReplyDeleteI don't have faith in the mail system here, things are forever taking ages to arrive or not showing up at all. Perhaps the UK mail system is more reliable. I know my e-mails, etc. arrive immediately.
But, on the other hand, I do like to write with a pen and even though I do say so myself, I have quite nice handwriting.....so, like I said...I don't know.

ReplyDeletesend me your address and I willsend you a hand written card!!!
Hurray! The art of the Christmas card ISN'T dead? Even with my schedule, I like to write to freinds and family just to say I love them and am thinking of them. So often I hear a response of, "Nice card, but it takes so long, don't have time, no one does that anyway, (add whatever thought here)" and I sort of wonder if I was purchasing buggy whip oil again...
ReplyDeleteSo, Merry Christmas, my friend, I don't know if it will get there in time, but I will send YOU a card, too!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Cat
OMG - So you have. Happy Holidays!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm a lover of hand-written cards, but I'm not great about honoring particular events or holidays with them. I tend to send cards randomly.
ReplyDeleteThe last major mass mailing I did was thank you cards for our wedding presents...six years ago...but so blessed with gifts were we, by the end of all the card writing I had to mentally go through several (sarcastic, stupid and/or generic) drafts before arriving at an acceptable note.
Crikey John that's an awful lot of cards sitting on the table. Mind you it's not surprising as you are such a popular and loveable chap♥ Linda xx
ReplyDeleteI love sending and receiving Christmas cards or any type of mail, not junk. I finished mine today and off to the post office tomorrow. I really don't care if people wish me a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays at least they remembered me.
ReplyDeleteI'm a card writer of all kinds. Not just Christmas cards, but any time I think I need to hold out a hand to a friend, pat them on the back, or give them a hug, I send a card.
ReplyDeleteIt's my way of letting them know they are thought of, and I share their triumphs and failures.
Sending Christmas cards, especially overseas, is the one time a year, I'm able to let friends and relatives know they are in my thoughts, especially during this special season.
I'd delight in being able to send you both a Christmas card, delivering wishes for a Very Merry Christmas ;)
You already have your cards done! That's just showing off!

It's getting pretty ridiculous here with not ticking anyone off by being overly politically correct. Just yesterday, someone fought to have a nativity scene removed from a township building, and now the girl is afraid for her life.
ReplyDeleteI do sometimes send out cards, but I am guilty of sending 'happy holidays' ones... and moreso, make sure that I don't send anything religious. I love writing things by hand, but usually only reserve it for thank you notes because I feel as you do... it's special and meaningful.
I also subscribe to the ideal that if someone really was concerned about what's going on with me, they'd read my blog, call me or do something with me once in a while. To send a card out to cover your bases is not good though... not that that's what you're doing, but it seems some do.
I agree with 100%. I believe sending cards shows you value the person enough to include a short, hand-written message to them as you wish them a happy Christmas or holiday season. I also hand-write the names and addresses on the envelopes as an extension of the personal touch.
ReplyDeleteI confess a card with a handwritten note is nice ~ but the people who send beautiful cards with nothing more than Happy/Merry and their signature, could just as well save their money..
ReplyDeleteDone!
ReplyDeleteI, too, love a card with a handwritten message but alas, I'm also delighted with the commercially printed things I get from our insurance company and bank. Why? Because I'm very competitive and at some point (not sure when it started exactly), amassing Christmas cards during December became a little game I play with myself. We have a "card wall" where I hang them all, and the goal of the game is to cover as much of the wall as possible. At first I was at least moderately discriminate about what I'd tack up there, but now I'll hang just about anything; personal cards, professional cards, junk mail advertising cards, (although I still draw the line at ripping the little name tags off of everyone's gifts and taping them up....for now.) :-)
ReplyDeleteDid I mention I'm easily entertained?
I'm easily entertained.
xxxxxxx! Dia
Ooh thankyou. I haven't bought any gifts yet, as I haven't had time to get to the shops. Yours will be expensive, as usual. Nx
ReplyDeleteI figure that it is actually Jesus' birthday, so why send people that aren't Jesus a card? Plus I don't have his address. Or believe in him. Plus I run a paperless home. It's not because I'm green, or politically correct. It's because I can't be arsed to go and buy cards, write them, go and buy stamps, stick them on envelopes, walk to the post box ... I'm knackered already just thinking about it!
ReplyDeletegood posts everyone
ReplyDeleteDia.....I do that too!

@David ("It's getting pretty ridiculous here with not ticking anyone off by being overly politically correct.")
ReplyDeleteSame here, David. There's been a "PC panic" here in the UK for some time now re. parents taking photographs of their children's Christmas nativity shows, due to a perceived fear of "abuse". Some "enterprising" (read, cynical) schools have also used this excuse to "invite" parents to buy "official" photographs instead, for a price. Fortunately, the new Government has now stepped in, something the previous government was afraid to do for fear of alienating a narrow fold of their voters.
I love writing Christmas cards, I HATE paying the postage......
ReplyDeleteGill in Canada
I love writing Christmas cards, and I love getting them, but I have noticed and I was a little bit disappointed at how few I got lost year. The cost of postage is just getting too outragous around here, but I still send them anyway, because I love doing it.
ReplyDeleteI noticed the HUGE pile there on your table!! The hand written or not part well that isn't what I actually was thinking about. LOL I was thinking even if I decided to send hand written cards, um my pile would be sooooooooooooooooo much smaller. I don't think I even know that many people. :O) ...
ReplyDeleteI must admit I am not even putting up a Christmas tree this year, that would be a few years now... BUT I do have a Randy Reindeer on my mantle, he is our Christmas Decor, he makes me smile every time I pass by him. He traveled thousands of miles to get to me :O)... he really represents Christmas well, he has nothing to do with the commercialism of Christmas that I find not so appealing, he is just a kind thought by someone far away :O). Isn't it funny what can really make a time of year that isn't always the best for them, better.
