Psychological Sun

After what seems like weeks of rain, we have just had the first fine day of the new Year! The village has literally come to life, with men repairing walls, painting chimneys and fixing the frost damaged gardens of winter.
Auntie Glad in her big woollen coat made the most of the sunny afternoon and went to see her sister on the periphery of the village, and dog walkers Pippa, Val and Peter passed the cottage to the bellows and woofs of  our dogs who had stationed themselves in the sunny window seat of our bedroom.
The animals love the sunshine in winter. The last two remaining ghost hens (above) dragged their heavy bodies from their usual hiding place of their coop door ( where they have spent the majority of the winter sheltering from the rain and snow) and set themselves up in a sunny spot to sun bathe. Only these two made it into their second year, but make it they have, and it was nice to see them content and warm for a change.

Making the most of the weather I opened up the cottage windows and let the countryside air in to freshen the place and then spring cleaned the living room free of dog smells and the slight coldness only stone cottages possess when it is damp outside!

Clean for a change, the living room

You can't quite feel the warmth of the sun, but it was there believe me
It's funny but give me a bright DRY day and tons of things get done...........

LOVE your cottage living room...ooooo the beams and fireplace are lovely! I miss having a real fireplace with a mantle...I love our wood stove but it's not quite the same. 11. Oooooooohhhhhhh!! Indoor pictures!! I love the cosy look of your home. I follow a couple of blogs about interior design and they are not shy about going into detail. On that note: Could we get a close-up on the framed pictures on the wall? Nosy is my middle name!

  13. My Hubby would agree with you there John. I started a clean & met two friends for doggy walkies & they'd been doing the same. Dillon then walked muddy paws all over my clean kitchen floor !

My girls know where all the best spots are for a bit of soaking up the sun

  15. The first thing that caught my eye was that cheery yellow pitcher full of red tulips. Lovely! I am partial to Spring flowers, probably because I am happiest in Springtime. I HATE winter, and the endless bitter cold and dreariness is so depressing (which is not good for someone with bi-polar). The first nice day (sunny and above freezing) all the windows get thrown wide, and I'm happy and energetic, and a million things get done. The cottage is beautifully cozy. I immediately wanted to curl up on the end of the sofa (in the sunbeam, of course) and read a good book!

Your living room looks fab. You put me to shame!

  22. You see? This is one of the things that makes Colorado so special. We really don't have winter here. Not like "back east." We have sunshine almost every single day, rain or snow, cold or hot.....well, except for today.

You can have a foot of snow underfoot in the morning and with our high altitude sunshine, it could all be gone by noon, don't you know!

I hope tomorrow is better, 'cause I am very spoiled! Only one day without sunshine, if you please!

  25. Looking closely at the middle picture, I noticed your antique telephone. It must be a total pain having to laboriously dial long numbers as the wheel turns back, only to find that the person you're calling is out.
I know Diane got there first but take out the phone and your living room looks like one of the sets for "Larkrise to Candleford"!

  26. The two remaining ghost hens look very determined to 'make it to spring'!
Thanks for the 'look around'....love the grandfather clock John. Any history that you are aware of?

the grandfather clock was my best friend's mother's clock and was in her family for many years
As a very young man I always loved it and when my friend's parents died I went to the sale of the antiques at auction and bought it!
Rol ( my friend) didnt want the clock himself but his sister ( my dear friend nia-who blogs replied here sometimes) was thrilled I had chosen to keep it

  34. With our bitter cold temps here, it is nice to live a warm day vicariously through your blog.

What a lovely home... and I love to see your hens sunning themselves.

  35. Love the living room photo, especially with the sunbeam. We usually have sunshine here in my rural town, unless the snow is coming down. Sometimes it's just beautiful to see the white snow covered ground with blue sky and sunshine above. Hope your ghost hens continue in good health!

  38. Oh! I went back for another look at the cheery cottage, and I noticed the knitting basket in the corner by the couch! My Grandma, with whom I lived, had one exactly like that, if a slightly different fabric. Gran could never just sit and watch TV, even though we watched very little of it. On Sunday when the TV Guide came in the local paper, she'd go through it and write down which shows we were going to watch for the week. It was always my job to "warm up" the tv, and while I was doing that, she'd bustle around and make sure she had her knitting bag and yarn and she'd rock in the lovely old rocker (that is god alone knows how old), and crochet while we watched TV. Thank you, John!

I've been wondering about the ghost hens, I admit they've captured my heart the darlings. They look so placid and content there in the sunshine...all two of them.
What a lovely home you guys have! So cozy...and there's the wood stove. I think I'd be spending all my time on THAT couch. Thanks for the pics, these and the ones in today's post, too!
