My gran used to read tea leaves
I’d forgotten that fact , but watching Portrait Artist Of The Year last night where Welsh actress Joanna Scanlan talked about her grandmother and tea leaf reading , my memories were triggered of leaf tea clumps in china cups of a 1970 pensioner bungalow with Space 1999 on the tv and beans on cheap white toast on the coffee table covered by gingham
Of course she couldn’t read “ the leaves”
But she always told a good story .
I learnt at an early age , to watch her read the room
And to use humour to observe it and run with it
She played to an audience
So do I
And we both are good at what we do.
To my knowledge she never really go anything right
But who cares ?
Right?
My gran with my mother circa 1942
My mother was 17
One of their first photos in wales
They left Liverpool after their home was destroyed
The photo was taken in Gwaenysgor
The sister village to Trelawnyd

My grandparents had the same garden chairs and similar photos. It was a thing I guess:) I very vaguely remember that TV show.
ReplyDeleteTime marches on and my memory files are getting quite full.
A nice photo....with a parrot?!
ReplyDeleteHome was destroyed during the war?
ReplyDeleteOh, memories ...
ReplyDeleteHappy memories. I think, like many of us post-war babies, that photo is so reminiscent of our childhoods. I have similar ones. And as you say, who cares if your grandma got it right? She was your grandma, so of course she was right! xx
ReplyDeleteOMG same with my gran!
ReplyDeleteWe LOVED to sit with her and she’d go ahead and read the tea leaves. Aww you took me back!
XOXO
Interesting story and I'm interested in the parrot and in how her home was destroyed. More information, please and thank you!
ReplyDeleteMy Grandma Hall and Granny Sheppard were both wonderful, too.
Hugs!
My grandma had an elderly friend who could read tea leaves too. I remember getting a reading or two from her when I was a little girl. Good clean fun!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting John! You had a tea leaf reader in the family... very mysterious... :)What a lovely photo of your mom and Gran Hugs! deb
