It’s 9 pm and there is a breeze from the South West , which is a welcome friend through the cottage windows. I’ve doused the Welsh with cold shower water a couple of times which has helped and am drinking a iced gin and tonic, which was a gift from Mrs Trellis who qualified the reason that she’d bought it for herself as it was the drink of choice in the tropics by British Tea Plantation owners to combat malaria . She passed it on too that she didn’t like the taste.
I did remind her that malaria was rare in Flintshire
Bun/ Weaver has gone again , leaving Bun/ weaver asleep in the back bedroom
I’ve spent the day in the kitchen ( the coolest room in the cottage) reading and doom scrolling
The village garage shop still had ice for sale and I’ve put it in a basin in front of the open window
I understand now just why people sleep on fire escapes in New York summers like they did in Rear Window

DeleteI was tempted to put the sprinkler on and sit in the garden this afternoon, it was so hot and oppressive. I'm now sat in the living room with the fan blowing straight in my face. Coolest I've been all day! xx

DeleteI think the sleep on fire escapes is an urban myth or 100 years ago, if ever. Like, here you are in your air conditioned 5 million dollar apartment or townhouse...you're gonna sleep on a rusty metal thing and get tetanus? And ,lol, what is the reason for ice on the window sill? I thought you'd put some in the dogs' water bowls and the rest to soak your feet?

Having lived in a house with central air and now living without, I prefer without. I have a spray bottle filled with water at hand, spray my face and neck and have a ceiling fan.

I have a room which is slightly cooler and spend time resting there. I keep thinking about all those who have to work in this heat, and wondering how this country will manage to adapt to hotter spells such as this.

"I'll go you halves" as the children say. We've got an extreme wind warning, likewise rain, and also severe swells in the Strait, so no ferries, and no planes flying either. I'm so glad I'm not schedules to sail today!! We're up overlooking the harbour (usually a glorious view) and we get every buffet of the Southerly.. Lots of branches strewn across the roads, and a friend traveling on the coastal motorway said they were down to one lane and there were roads being thrown across the lane as they drove carefully through. Rather them than me! Keep cool, and well hydrated John.

ReplyDeleteYou are relatively lucky compared to my hometown Deventer. We are smoldering here in 33 / 35 degrees Celcius. I keep close to my airco and read nice blogs about cooler places.

ReplyDeleteWe live in central Texas and it has been HOT here for more than a week 99-102 every day thats in Fahrenheit , hot and dry but we've had so much rain earlier thats its fairly humid.. uugh.. So .. if we do things outside its early morning or late evening , thats really a way of life in TX... I live in central aircond.. thank goodness because i don't think i'd make it otherwise.... I spent my Summers as a kid with my Grandparents in Florida... they had very limited aircondition... they would run it from say 2pm until 7pm then you had to tough it out.. but you know i remember a breeze coming through the window that felt so nice and the sheets on the bed were always cool... kids are tough... i'm not... lol ... Your bowl in the window reminded me of an evaporative cooler effect.... can you get those where you are? Before the air cond... we used to have evaporative coolers and we would often put ice in them.... Hugs! deb
