The cottage will never be pristine
I do try, but like dogs often do with their owners,
My cottage resembles me in a strange sort of way.
The cracks in the kitchen ceiling mark a time I left the water running in the bathroom so like me the cottage has its own plumbing scars.
One of the kitchen windows has a spider vein hole echoing the vision in my shaky right eye
And the living room carpets are all in need of a good scrub.
Ha!
The Kitchen cabinets have been rubbed for years by two terrier bums as I have, and the decor and look of the place is just a little old fashioned and in places a tiny bit scruffy.
But like me it generally homely and warm and friendly, with some surprises still in store for visitors who want to explore its more mysterious corners lol
All as it should be. Houses should be lived in, by people and animals. I remember how miserable I was when a past house was up for sale, and had to be kept viewer-ready for ages. It's not a natural way to live.

ReplyDeleteMy parents may have been appalled, but I recently paid a chunk of money to have my home professionally cleaned. I was beating myself up for it, until the anvil was lifted from my neck and I have been enjoying my home again. Now it's easier to maintain, as well.

ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read all the responses to this! For myself - I have moved so many times and have lived in many different home styles, so I have no idea what a "me house" would look/feel like. I agree with Traveller!
ReplyDeleteI was offered a tour of a new friend's home recently that was so pristine, so perfectly staged, and so on point that when I returned home...I despaired. And then reminded myself that I cannot and will not attempt to live like that. I have messy dogs, a husband, visiting family and friends and frankly, my home is tidy enough. Rough edges? You bet, but it's good enough for me. Your home is beautiful and just right for you John. I love it and you dear man.
ReplyDeleteI have a mental list of all of the things that should be done to fix up my home but I know whenever I get around to selling it that the next owner will probably gut it and replace everything so why bother.?! My home is comfortable and friendly and people are always welcome to come in and relax.

Ah, John, it's a comfortable and cozy home for you and the family and can seat 3 friends plus your good self around the table.
ReplyDeleteI inherited my maternal grandparent's couch and two chairs (all were reupholstered) plus two side tables and our older son said my living room looked like a granny room. Well, of course, much of the furniture is from my grandma! He was chagrined!

Anyone visiting me to complain about my housework will not be invited back (and probably wasn't invited in the first place). Your house is much more organized than mine - I quilt and do various crafts many of which are spread around. It is clean under it all and I have never caused anyone to have food poisoning so I think it is well enough. I would love to visit you and probably wouldn't notice anything you have mentioned!!!

ReplyDeleteI much prefer a warm and cozy home, like yours and mine, where family, friends and pets are comfortable and happy.
It is the lived-in feel.
Our cottage here is much the same. It's never totally clean, there are scars on certain walls where the dogs have slept, and it's (without doubt) the most pleasant home I've ever owned.

My late brother in law had to have a brand new house, top of the line appliances and expensive furnishings and yet he loved our shabby, untidy, dog hair strewn home, always settling in to the old sofa with a contented sigh. As for dogs resembling their humans, one of our dogs is a drama queen, my husband adores her and says he likes difficult women. Hmmm...
