Project Hail Mary

Project Hail Mary is a children’s film for adults. To save the planet lonely science teacher Rylan Grace ( Ryan Gosling) joins the Earth’s nations scientists to find a cure for an infection attacking the sun. In a disastrous space journey he teams up with a spider like alien looking for a similar cure and the pair become friends in their joint quest.
We have seen this all before
Think Robinson Crusoe, ET, and Lost In Space, but the humour led by Gosling is infectious and charming , the sentimentality just enough for tears and the icy  scientific Governmental leader led by the enigmatic Sandra Hüller ( below) is a perfect foil for Gosling’s chaotic hero.

I liked it.
A bit too long
And with more holes in the plot than a block of Swiss cheese,
This is a film that celebrates friendship and good in all men
Oh and in aliens

  1. Anything that celebrates friendship and goodness is very welcome, especially at the moment when hatred and fear is so prevalent.
Off on a tangent, following your recommendation of the Other Bennett Sister, we've binge watched them all. Another feel good series that celebrates individuality and strength. Loved it. Thanks. xx

  3. I enjoyed the movie. Friendship and working together, with many funny moments stopped it being too serious. As you say, a bit too long but worth seeing at the cinema on the big screen.

  5. We went to see the film with my two youngest sons (18 and 20). We all liked it, or loved it! It was funny, with no stupid plotline of baddie trying to sabotage something, or romantic plot. For us it wasn't too long, in fact there wasn't (for us) any moments when any of us would've thought "maybe I'll go to the toilet now". I haven't read the book, 20yrs old has. He said it was different from the book, but not in the bad way. I'll read the book soon.
We also liked Martian (with Matt Damon).

  8. I read the book a few years ago, and was as besotted with it, as I was with Weir's "The Martian" and the subsequent movie featuring the fabulous Matt Damon. Project Hail Mary stuck to the book, yet a lot had to get cut for time's sake, which would have been helpful in understanding what the hell was going on. I absolutely loved it! There seems to be nothing Ryan Gosling cannot do. Sandra Huller played the mercurial and pragmatic scientist to a T. I highly recommend that people read the book first, and then see the movie, it will be far more enjoyable. "Fist my bump!"

  14. So many movies are too long these days. Who decided every movie has to be three hours?!

    1. It’s a falsehood to say real film buffs love long movies
