She has progressive heart failure
The Spanish Vet told me nothing I didn’t know.
Mary sat blinking between us her cataracts evident under the surgery lights and she coughed heavily on cue
We talked about options and settled for medication only
Take her home and love her the vet suggested
We were out of the door before she had finished her speech.
Roger tottering dutifully behind, fully aware of the seriousness of the visit.
I met Chic Eleanor for lunch and before we parted she asked me what was bothering me
I told her about Mary as she busied herself rearranging my scarf and before I could make light of things she wrapped her arms around my neck in a hug which almost broke my heart in its care.
Darling man I so understand she said
The loving her will be easy. Dear Mary.

DeleteDear Mary ... It's so hard to say good-bye to a staunch friend of years and years. Rest assured that you've given her the best home, the best love, the best food, and the best pack-mates she could have ever hoped for and best of all, safety and warmth. It's time for hospice care for her.

DeleteDear sweet pup, so beloved and a great companion. My 13 1/2 year old dog had a cervical injury three years ago. Got over that . Then she got big cysts and had to have surgery. Then pancreatitis. She did her best, It was osteosarcoma that got her. She is greatly missed and always will be. Still find myself calling the new puppy by her name and not Archie😭❤️❤️

DeleteMy Bull Terrier had this and we chose a similar route. We had him another 2.5 years until he was 11 and died in his sleep. Sending love and hugs for Mary x

DeleteWith you both all the way. Exactly the same with my soul dog: an elderly neglected Sheltie rescue who was so poorly the rescue would not take a donation for him as they thought he would only last a week, and we were just taking him home to die in comfort. But we got him better, and he was our treasure for almost four years, one of many rescues that enriched our lives. Still miss my Jack, who finally faded gently but surely just like Mary is doing. Grieving like this is a long, steady, heart aching process. And I am still looking for another rescue sheltie to fill that void. Mary is special. Cherish your long goodbye.

DeleteI am so sorry to read this John. My heart breaks for you. The same thing happened to one of my sister's dogs two years ago. "Dogs lives are too short. Their only fault, really."
